II. INTRODUCTION
Page - 5
A) About Your Pharmaceutical RO System
The PHARM40 RO system uses a single pass two or three array membrane
configuration to produce high quality pharmaceutical grade water for a variety
of applications. Six different sizes are available with nominal product flow
rates ranging from 7 to 28 gpm using well water feed with an SDI of less than
3. Realized flow rates will depend on site specific feed water parameters as
discussed in Section III (System Installation) and in Section X (Specifications).
The six models are listed below in order of increasing nominal product flow
rate. To determine the model of your system, check the identification label on
the main control panel. Complete specifications for each model are provided
in Section X at the back of this manual.
Model Product Flow Rate (GPM, Nominal)
P43XX06 7 GPM
P43XX09 12 GPM
P43XX12 15 GPM
P43XX16 19 GPM
P43XX20 24 GPM
P43XX24 28 GPM
Each system consists of a structural steel frame that supports the pressure
vessels containing RO membranes, a multi-stage centrifugal feed pump, a main
control panel with programmable logic controller (PLC), a high voltage panel,
plumbing and instrumentation. The main difference between the models listed
above is the size and number of pressure vessels.
Each RO system is equipped with instrumentation and controls that monitor critical
operating parameters and will shut down the system in the event that one of these
parameters deviates from preset limits. This alarm shutdown capability protects the
equipment from damage and assures the maintenance of high quality product water.
The Process Flow Diagram in the drawing section describes water flow through a
generalized system. Note that the number and arrangement of pressure vessels (which
varies among models) is not specified.
In all PHARM40 RO systems, the feed flow is separated into two flow streams.
The main flow stream of water passes through the RO membrane and becomes
RO permeate or product. The secondary flow stream passes across the surface
of the membrane, carrying away the rejected substances and becomes the
concentrate or reject stream. This reject stream is further separated into two
streams. The first is the RO reject to the waste drain and the second is recycled
back to the RO feed. This reject recycle re-uses some of the otherwise rejected
water to reduce waste and boost the recovery of the RO unit.
II. INTRODUCTION
Page - 6
The term recovery is defined as the percentage of feed water that is processed
as product water. RO membranes will reject organics, suspended solids and up
to 98% of the dissolved solids present in the inlet feed water.

100 psi).
Pretreatment equipment including softeners, prefilters and chemical
injection systems. See Section X for further information.
3) Feed Water Requirements
Each unit design is based on a specific feed water analysis and reverse osmosis
design projection. The flow rates of the system are dependent on these feed
water characteristics. The feed water is defined as either ‘Surface Water Feed’
with a Silt Density Index (SDI) of three to five, or ‘Well Water Feed’ with a
SDI of less than three. Once the exact feed water has been established, with an
accurate feed water analysis, the reverse osmosis design projection is generated
and exact flow rates and operating pressure values are defined. This design
projection will not only calculate flow rates and operating pressures, but also
membrane scaling tendencies and chemical pretreatment requirements.
The raw feed water for the RO system must conform to the EPA specifications
for potable water listed under the Safe Drinking Water Act. See Table 1
below.

In addition to the feed water requirements listed in Tables 1 and 2, provision
must be made to protect the RO unit from the potentially damaging effects of
water hammer. If you suspect that water hammer may present a problem in
your application, call U.S. Filter Technical Support at 800-875-7873 (ext.
5000).
4) Operating Environment
The RO System should be installed indoors in an environment where it is
shielded from extremes in temperature and humidity. Ambient temperature
should be between 10 and 35 C (50 and 95 F). The system can tolerate
humidity of up to 90%, as long as condensation does not occur.
CAUTION
Moisture from condensation must not be allowed to accumulate inside any
electrical enclosure. If you detect moisture, dry electrical components
promptly. If moisture buildup becomes a chronic problem, consider
moving the system to a more favorable environment or maintain desiccant
inside the enclosures.
5) Space Requirements
The configuration of piping and electrical connections, which will vary from
site to site, determines the amount of clearance required around the RO system
in its final location. Refer to the specifications in Section X for basic system
dimensions.
III. SYSTEM INSTALLATION
Page - 11
6) Drain Requirements
The RO system should be placed near a floor drain that can accommodate a
flow rate 20% greater than the combined reject and product flow rates of the
unit. Also, the drain must be able to handle the membrane preservative that
will be flushed out of the system during initial startup.
7) Power Requirements
This RO system requires 460VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz power.
CAUTION
Do not connect the system to a service that will experience severe power
surges. Such surges can damage pump motors, power supply components and
control circuits.
B) Inspection
Inspect all equipment upon arrival. If your RO system arrives with obvious
shipping damage, immediately contact both the responsible carrier and U.S.
Filter. Refer to pages i-iii of this manual for a list of U.S. Filter Technical
Support locations.
C) Unpacking and Deploying the System
The RO system is constructed within a protective steel frame that is mounted
on a skeleton wood frame for shipping. The electrical enclosures and
instruments and sealed in shrink wrap.
CAUTION
To protect the system from scratches and other superficial damage, do not
remove the shrink wrap until the unit has been lifted from the truck and
positioned at its final location.
a) Lift the system from the truck bed using a crane and suitable straps or
cables attached to the four corners of the frame.
WARNING
Use safe lifting practices when moving the RO system. Only qualified riggers
should attempt to move the unit.
CAUTION
Equipment handlers should be informed not to lift or pull any of the system
columns or components by their piping assemblies.
a) Set the system on wheeled pallets and roll to its final location. Use a floor
jack or fork lift to remove the pallets.
b) Level the system. Place shims under the frame until it is as level as
possible.
