The 3M Hot Melt Applicators use electric heat to melt the adhesive, and air pressure to deliver the adhesive. Adhesive temperature is automatically maintained by a fixed thermostat on the heat block. The system is further protected by a thermal cutout (TCO), which acts as a thermal fuse.
When the trigger is pulled, the variable regulator allows air pressure into the rear of the Speedloader stick feed. Air pushes the piston, which advances the adhesive stick through the applicator. As the adhesive advances, it passes through a hard plastic insulating sleeve which acts as a thermal barrier to keep molten adhesive and heat in the forward portion of the applicator. The rest of the applicator stays cool.
