Theintendeduseforthemanual(mechanical)wheelchairitto
providemobilityandtransportationofphysicallyimpairedpersons.
Themanualwheelchairisintendedforongoingdailyuse.Themodels
offerawiderangeofcustomizationwhichallowsforabetterfit
fortheenduserresultingincomfort,lightweight,easierpropelling,
transferring,andsmoothride.Themanualwheelchairisintendedfor

2.4CopingwithEverydayObstacles
Copingwiththeirritationofeverydayobstaclescanbealleviated
somewhatbylearninghowtomanageyourwheelchair.Keepinmind
yourcenterofgravitytomaintainstabilityandbalance.
2.5ANotetoWheelchairAssistants
Whenassistancetothewheelchairuserisrequired,rememberto
usegoodbodymechanics.Keepyourbackstraightandbendyour
kneeswhenevertiltingthewheelchairortraversingcurbs,orother
impediments.
WARNING!
ā€“Donotattempttoliftawheelchairbyliftingonany
removable(detachable)parts.Liftingbymeansof
anyremovable(detachable)partsofawheelchair
mayresultininjurytotheuserordamagetothe
wheelchair.
Also,beawareofanyremovable(detachable)parts.TheseMUST
NEVERbeusedtomovethewheelchairorasliftingsupports,as
theymaybeinadvertentlyreleased,resultinginpossibleinjurytothe
userand/orassistant(s).
Whenlearninganewassistancetechnique,haveanexperienced

2.6Tipping
WARNING!

ā€“Whenloweringthefrontcastersofthewheelchair,
DONOTletthewheelchairdropthelastfewinches
totheground.Thiscouldresultininjurytothe
occupant.
Aftermasteringthetechniquesoftippingthewheelchair,useoneof
thefollowingmethodstotacklecurbs,shortstairs,etc.
2.7Stairways
WARNING!
ā€“Extremecautionisadvisedwhenitisnecessaryto
moveanoccupiedorunoccupiedwheelchairup
ordownthestairs.Invacarerecommendsthat,if
possible,theuserberemovedfromthewheelchair
priortomoving.Invacarerecommendsusingtwo
assistantsandmakingthoroughpreparations.Make
suretouseonlysecure,non-detachablepartsfor
hand-heldsupports.
Followthisprocedureformovingthewheelchairbetweenfloors
whenanelevatorisnotavailable:

MovingUpStairs
1.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacingup.
2.Oneassistant(positionedbehindthewheelchair),securelygrasps
anon-removable(non-detachable)partofthewheelchairfor
leverageandtiltsthewheelchairbacktothebalancepoint.
3.Afterthewheelchairhasbeentiltedbacktothebalancepoint,
theassistantbehindthewheelchairbacksthewheelchairup
againstthefirststep.
4.Thesecondassistant(positionedinthefrontofthewheelchair),
withafirmholdonanon-detachablepartoftheframework,lifts
thewheelchairupandontothenextstairaboveandsteadies
thewheelchairastheassistantbehindthewheelchairplacesone
footonthenextstairaboveandrepeatsprocess.
5.Thewheelchairshouldnotbelowereduntilthelaststairhas
beennegotiatedandthewheelchairhasbeenrolledawayfrom
thestairway.
6.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacing
down.
MovingDownStairs
1.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacingup.
2.Oneassistant(positionedbehindthewheelchair),securelygrasps
anon-removable(non-detachable)partofthewheelchairfor
leverageandtiltsthewheelchairbacktothebalancepoint.
3.Afterthewheelchairhasbeentiltedbacktothebalancepoint,
theassistantbehindthewheelchairrollsthewheelchairupto
theedgeofthefirststep.
4.Thesecondassistant(positionedinthefrontofthewheelchair),
withafirmholdonanon-detachablepartoftheframework,
lowersthewheelchairdownandontothenextstairbelowand
steadiesthewheelchairastheassistantintherearplacesone
footonthenextstairbelowandrepeatsprocess.
5.Thewheelchairshouldnotbelowereduntilthelaststairhas
beennegotiatedandthewheelchairhasbeenrolledawayfrom
thestairway.
6.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacing
down.
2.8Escalators
WARNING!
ā€“DONOTuseanescalatortomoveawheelchair
betweenfloors.Seriousbodilyinjurymayoccur.
2.9TransferringToandFromOtherSeats
WARNING!
ā€“Beforeattemptingtotransferinoroutofthe
wheelchair,everyprecautionshouldbetakento
reducethegapdistance.
ā€“Turnbothcastersparalleltotheobjectyouare
transferringonto.Alsobecertainthewheellocksare
engagedtohelppreventthewheelsfrommoving.
ā€“Whentransferring,positionyourselfasfarback
aspossibleintheseat.Thiswillpreventdamaged
upholsteryandthepossibilityofthewheelchairtipping
forward.

Thisactivitymaybeperformedindependentlyprovidedyou
haveadequatemobilityandupperbodystrength.
Positionthewheelchairascloseaspossiblealongsidetheseatto
whichyouaretransferring,withthefrontcastersparalleltoit.
Removethearmrest,ifinstalled.Engagewheellocks.Shiftbody
weightintoseatwithtransfer.
Duringindependenttransfer,littleornoseatplatformwillbebeneath
you.Useatransferboardifatallpossible.
2.10SafetyInspectionChecklist
Everysixmonths,takeyourwheelchairtoaqualified
technicianforathoroughinspectionandservicing.Regular
cleaningwillreveallooseorwornpartsandenhancethe
smoothoperationofyourwheelchair.Tooperateproperly
andsafely,yourwheelchairMUSTbecaredforjustlikeany
othervehicle.Routinemaintenancewillextendthelifeand
efficiencyofyourwheelchair.Cleanupholsterywithmild
soapandwaterorspraydisinfectantusingasponge.DO
NOTusebleachorwashinawashingmachine.
CAUTION!
ā€“Aswithanyvehicle,thewheelsandtiresshouldbe
checkedperiodicallyforcracksandwear,andshould
bereplacedifdamaged.
Initialadjustmentsshouldbemadetosuityourpersonalbody
structureandpreference.Thereafterfollowthesemaintenance
procedures:
InspectInitially
qEnsurewheelchairrollsstraight(noexcessivedrag/pulltoone
side).
qEnsurewheellocksDonotinterferewithtireswhenrolling.
qEnsurepivotpointsarefreeofwearandlooseness.
qEnsurewheellocksareeasytoengageandpreventthewheels
frommoving.
