Introduction

This kit includes all the hardware and software necessary for to

convert a QMS

magicolor

2 DeskLaser Print System into a QMS

magicolor

2 CX Print System.

Kit Contents

In addition to these instructions, your upgrade kit contains the follow-

ing items. Make sure that you have all of these items before proceed-

ing with the installation. Report any discrepancies to your QMS

vendor. Don’t return any merchandise before contacting the vendor.

Conversion Procedure

Converting your QMS

magicolor

2 DeskLaser to a QMS

magicolor

CX Print System involves two steps:

nn Removing the

magicolor

2 DeskLaser controller board and

installing the

magicolor

2 CX controller board.

» Note:

You’ll need a Phillips screwdriver for this procedure.

nn Applying the appropriate identification labels.

nn Installing the printer driver(s).

▲ Caution

It’s very important to protect the printer controller board

from electrostatic damage while performing this conversion.

Attach one end of the anti-static wrist band included in this kit to your

wrist and the other end to any convenient electrical ground. The bare

metal chassis of equipment, such as on the back of a computer, is

suitable if it is plugged in but turned off. Never attach the wrist strap

to any piece of equipment with an electrical current present. Turn off

all power switches first. Plastic, rubber, wood, painted metal surfaces,

and telephones are not acceptable grounding points. The printer isn’t

an acceptable grounding point either because it must be unplugged

before you perform this task.

Installing the magicolor 2 CX Controller Board

▲ Caution:

The following procedure is written for the system

administrator. Do not attempt this procedure if you have no

experience working with circuit boards.

1 Turn off the printer, remove the power

cord, and disconnect all interface

cables from the printer.

2 Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen

the two mounting screws that hold

the controller board to the printer.

3 Pull the

magicolor

2 DeskLaser con-

troller board straight out and lay it on

a flat surface.

4 Remove from its packaging the

magicolor

2 CX controller

board.

5 If you want to, remove any SIMMs from the

magicolor

DeskLaser controller board, and install them on the

magi-

color

2 CX controller board.

The

magicolor

2 CX control board comes standard with 24 MB of

memory. It’s not necessary to add additional memory, but you

may want to. Refer to the

QMS magicolor 2 Options

manual for

SIMM removal and installation instructions.

6 Remove from their packaging any SIMMs you purchased

separately and install them on the

magicolor

2 CX controller

board.

Again, it’s not necessary to add additional memory, but you may

want to. Refer to the

QMS magicolor 2 Options

manual for SIMM

installation instructions.

7 If you purchased any other options, such as an internal hard

disk, install them now.

Refer to the

QMS magicolor 2 Options

manual for instructions.

QMS magicolor DeskLaser to CX Conversion4

Verifying the Conversion

To verify the conversion, turn on the printer. A start-up page,

identifying the printer as a QMS

magicolor

2, automatically prints.

This indicates that the printer has successfully been converted from a

QMS

magicolor 2

DeskLaser to a QMS

magicolor

2 CX Print System.

Applying the Identification Labels

Use the following illustrations to install the new dataplate and product

ID logo on the printer.

8 Align the

magicolor

2 CX controller

board on the plastic guides, and then

slide it into the printer.

Make sure it’s properly seated in its con-

nectors, but do not force it.

9 Tighten the two mounting screws.

10 Reconnect the interface cables and

power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Dataplate

» Note:

The dataplate illustrated here is for 110 volt printers. If you have

a 220 volt printer, discard overlay P/N 1241202-001 (there is no FCC

ID line on the dataplate). In addition, the Model name for 220 volt

printers ends with a “-2” rather than a “-1.”
