AGI Fabricated Airlock

AGI Fabricated Airlocks are used in pneumatic conveying systems, dust collection systems, and cyclone receiver installations to allow dry free-flowing materials to move between two areas of differing air pressure. The airlock has a rugged cast housing with inlet and outlet ports, a rotor, and a drive unit. It has multi-bladed rotor that picks up the material in the pocket between two blades as it rotates.

1. Introduction
Thank you for your purchase. Read and follow the instructions in this manual and in the
manufacturer’s manuals that are provided with your equipment. If these manuals are not included,
contact AGI Airlanco immediately for replacements prior to installation, operation, or maintenance.
This manual alongside the manufacturer’s manuals provide instructions and safety information to help
you install, operate, and maintain the fabricated airlock. If any information in these manuals are not
understood or if you need additional information, please contact AGI Airlanco or the manufacturer for
assistance.
The manuals should be regarded as part of the equipment and kept in a safe and accessible place.
1.1. Equipment Overview
Rotary airlocks have a rugged cast housing with inlet and outlet ports, a rotor, and a drive unit. It has multi-
bladed rotor that picks up the material in the pocket between two blades as it rotates. The air is sealed
between the inlet and outlet ports which allows the material to move downward through the valve while
maintaining the pressure differential between the two areas. The pressure or vacuum difference must be
maintained within the valve for proper function.
1.2. Intended Use
Airlock is not a standalone device. It is intended to be installed within a larger system or process.
AGI Airlanco fabricated airlocks are used in pneumatic conveying systems, dust collection systems, and
cyclone receiver installations to allow dry free-flowing materials to move between two areas of differing air
pressure.
1.3. Serial Number Location
The serial number location for your fabricated airlock is shown in the figure below. Have the serial number
ready when ordering parts or requesting service or other information. Record information in the table below for
easy reference.

2. Safety
2.1. Safety Alert Symbol and Signal Words
This safety alert symbol indicates important safety messages in this manual. When you see
this symbol, be alert to the possibility of injury or death, carefully read the message that
follows, and inform others.
Signal Words: Note the use of the signal words DANGER,WARNING,CAUTION, and NOTICE with the safety
messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the definitions below as a
guideline.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in serious injury or
death.

2.2. General Safety Information
Read and understand all safety instructions, safety decals, and manuals and follow them when operating or
maintaining the equipment.
Owners must give instructions and review the information initially and annually with
all personnel before allowing them in the work area. Untrained users/operators
expose themselves and bystanders to possible serious injury or death.
Use for intended purposes only.
Modification of the fabricated airlock in any way without written permission from the manufacturer is not
covered by the warranty.
Follow a health and safety program for your worksite. Contact your local occupational health and safety
organization for information.
Follow applicable local codes and regulations.
2.3. Rotating Parts Safety
Keep body, hair, and clothing away from rotating shafts,
pulleys, belts, chains, and sprockets.
Do not operate with any guard removed or modified. Keep
guards in good working order.
Shut off and lock out power source before inspecting or
servicing machine.

2.4. Drives and Lockout Safety
Inspect the power source(s) before using and know how to shut down in an emergency.
Whenever you service or adjust your equipment, make sure you shut down the power
source and unplug or remove the key (as applicable) to prevent inadvertent start-up and
hazardous energy release. Know the procedure(s) that applies to your equipment from the
following power source(s). Ensure that all personnel are clear before turning on power to
equipment.
2.4.1 Electric Motor Safety
Power Source
Electric motors and controls shall be installed and serviced by
a qualified electrician and must meet all local codes and
standards.
Use a magnetic starter to protect the electric motor.
You must have a manual reset button.
Reset and motor starting controls must be located so that the
operator has full view of the entire operation.
Locate main power disconnect switch within reach from
ground level to permit ready access in case of an emergency.
Motor must be properly grounded.
Ensure electrical wiring and cords remain in good condition;
replace if necessary.

The main power disconnect switch should be in the locked position during shutdown or
whenever maintenance is performed.
If reset is required, disconnect all power before resetting motor.
2.5. Safety Decals
Keep safety decals clean and legible at all times.
Replace safety decals that are missing or have become illegible. See decal location figures that follow.
Replaced parts must display the same decal(s) as the original part.
Replacement safety decals are available free of charge from your distributor, dealer, or factory as applicable.
2.5.1 Decal Installation/Replacement
1. Decal area must be clean and dry, with a temperature above 50°F (10°C).
2. Decide on the exact position before you remove the backing paper.
3. Align the decal over the specified area and carefully press the small portion with the exposed sticky backing
in place.
4. Slowly peel back the remaining paper and carefully smooth the remaining portion of the decal in place.

5. Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and smoothed out using the decal backing paper.
2.5.2 Safety Decal Locations and Details
Replicas of the safety decals that are attached to the fabricated airlock and their messages are shown in the
figure(s) that follow. Safe operation and use of the fabricated airlock requires that you familiarize yourself with
the various safety decals and the areas or particular functions that the decals apply to, as well as the safety
precautions that must be taken to avoid serious injury, death, or damage.

3. Pre-Installation
Before continuing, ensure you have completely read and understood this manual’s
Safety section, in addition to the safety information in the section(s) below.
3.1. Receiving the Equipment
Visually inspect the equipment before removing from the truck.
Note and take photographs of damages such as dents and scratches.
Notify AGI Airlanco immediately of any damage to your equipment.
Important
Do not assemble or install damaged components. Any damage can adversely affect the performance
of your Airlock.
Check packing lists thoroughly and report shortages to AGI Airlanco.
Note
It is the purchaser’s responsibility to file shortage reports and damage claims with the carrier and
supplier. The carrier is responsible for any damage to the equipment while it is in transit.
3.2. Storing the Fabricated Airlock Before Installing
Short Term Storage (up to 30 days)
Store valve in a clean, dry location to prevent rust and corrosion of steel components.
Store motor and gearbox indoors in a clean, dry, and vibration-free environment.
For outdoor storage, cover the inlet and outlet to prevent accumulation of dirt and moisture. Cover the gear
reducer and motor with waterproof material.
Long Term Storage
Apply a rust preventive product inside of the valve.
Follow the motor and gear manufacturer’s instructions for long term storage.

4. General Instructions
Before continuing, ensure you have completely read and understood this manual’s
Safety section, in addition to the safety information in the manufacturer’s manuals.
The following sections provide a general overview of equipment installation, operation, and
maintenance. Specific installation, operation and maintenance of fabricated airlocks can vary
depending on the specific requirements of the application.
4.1. Installation
Follow the general instructions below and the manufacturer’s instructions to help ensure the safe and proper
assembly of your equipment.
Use the proper tools, rated lifting equipment, and lifting points for moving and lifting the equipment.
Make sure the inlet and outlet ports are permanently installed to the mating equipment or permanently
guarded.
Have a qualified electrician install all electrical connections.
Install the equipment in accordance with applicable local codes and regulations.
Test the equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly.
4.2. Operation
Before attempting to operate the equipment, follow the general instructions below and the instructions in the
manuals from equipment manufacturer or supplier for safe operation.
Conduct preliminary inspections before the start-up to avoid improper operations.
Never operate airlock with unguarded inlet, outlet or chain drive.
Read and understand the operation of the system for which the airlock is installed.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for starting the equipment.
Monitor equipment operation.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for stopping the equipment.
Perform maintenance as required.
4.3. Maintenance
Follow the general instructions below and the instructions in the manuals from equipment manufacturer or
supplier for safe maintenance.
Visually inspect the equipment for wear or damage.
Clean the equipment as required.
Create and follow a maintenance program.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for routine maintenance.

4.3.1 General Maintenance
Shut down and lock out power before maintaining equipment.
Rotary Valve
Service the rotary valve every six months.
Add a small amount of grease to each bearing.
Important
Damage may result from forcing an excessive amount of grease into the bearing.
Check the flexible wipers inside the rotary valve for wear. Replace as needed with recommended spare
parts.
Roller Chain Drive
Keep the roller chain drive tight enough so that the chain cannot “climb the sprocket”.
Lightly oil once a month.
Remove foreign debris and repaint exterior as needed.

6. Troubleshooting
Shut down and lock out all power sources before diagnosing any of the causes or
attempting any of the solutions below.
In the following section, we have listed some causes and solutions to some of the problems you may
encounter.
If you encounter a problem that is difficult to solve, even after having read through this section, please
contact your local dealer or distributor. Before you contact them, please have this operation manual
and the serial number from your machine ready.
Problem Cause Solution
Rotor does not turn Broken Chain Replace the chain and inspect sprockets
for damage.
Rotor Jammed Inspect the inside of the airlock for large
pieces of debris jamming the rotor.
Remove any obstructions using a tool. Do
not use your hands. Inspect the wipers for
damage.
Speed Reducer Failure Remove the chain and run the motor with
no load. Refer to attached OEM speed
reducer manual.
Excessive leakage past
airlock
Worn or damaged wipers Replace wipers.
Bearing noise Worn or damaged bearings Grease bearing. Replace bearing if noise

7. Warranty
Terms and Conditions
The ADDRESSEE is hereinafter referred to as PURCHASER and AIRLANCO as SELLER.
A. Shipments, deliveries and performances of work shall at all times be subject to the approval of the
SELLER'S Credit Department and the SELLER may at any time decline to make any shipment or delivery
or perform any work except upon receipt of payment or upon terms and conditions or security
satisfactory to such Department.
B. If PURCHASER has resale tax permit and materials are for resale, PURCHASER should show this
information on his purchase order.
C. Unit paid for, the title to and ownership and right of possession of material covered by this contract
shall be and remain in the SELLER until SELLER'S right to lien attaches to said materials in the structure
for which it is intended, and in case the PURCHASER shall become insolvent, or refuse or neglect to
pay for materials herein provided, the SELLER may at its option, without process of law, retake
possession of any or all materials wherever the same may be found, except as above provided, and
credit the account of the PURCHASER with the value thereof to the SELLER, less the necessary cost and
freight charges in retaking the same.
D. It is expressly understood that there are not understandings or agreements other than those
expressed herein.
E. After acceptance of order, but before shop drawings are made or an order placed in production, or
before buying, or before manufacturing special materials or products, an order may be changed or
canceled by mutual agreement confirmed in writing; but after making shop details or placing an order
in production or ordering or manufacturing special materials or products, an order may not be
changed or canceled without the PURCHASER assuming charges for loss incurred. Such charges will be
invoiced at cost plus 15%.
F. Promises of shipment are estimates based upon information at the time and, to the best of our
knowledge, are accurate. Every effort will be made to ship on schedule, but we assume no liability for
delays.
G. No materials or equipment will be accepted for return without first obtaining our approval. All
products manufactured by or sold by AIRLANCO are warranted to be free of latent defects in either
materials or workmanship. Any product failing to meet said standards, in either materials or
workmanship will be replaced, in exchange for part in which defect was found. Unless otherwise
stated, PURCHASER'S claims must be registered within 60 days after date of shipment and must be
substantiated by our inspection. No claims will be allowed for correction of alleged misfits, unless the
SELLER shall have been notified and his responsibility proved. Ordinary inaccuracies of shop work shall
not be considered misfits. See additional warranty conditions in Section J.
H. Any modification or change in specifications, design, or price by either the PURCHASER or SELLER
affecting this quotation must be confirmed in writing, showing the number and date of the quotation
or order.
I. SELLER certifies that the products covered hereby are fabricated by it in accordance with all federal
laws.
7. WARRANTY FABRICATED AIRLOCK

Warranty
The property sold hereunder is warranted for one full year against defective workmanship or
materials. Such warranty is expressly limited to replacing or repairing any property sold hereunder,
which is demonstrated to seller's reasonable satisfaction to have been defective at the time of delivery
thereof. If within one (1) year after delivery to the customer the product fails to function properly due
to a defect in either materials or workmanship, the seller will at its option, either repair the defective
part or replace the defective part with a new or reconditioned part. Labor charges for removing
defective parts and installing replacement parts and applicable sales and other taxes, if any, shall not
be covered by this warranty. Seller shall not be liable for any special, indirect, or consequential
damages.
Seller will use all reasonable means to deliver within the time specified, but shall not be held
responsible or liable for any loss, damage, detention or delay caused by accidents, strikes, lockouts,
fire, explosions, theft, lightning, windstorm, earthquake, floods, storms, riots, civil commotion,
malicious mischief, act of God or by any other cause beyond its reasonable control whether or not the
same is herein specified and in any event, seller shall not be liable for any special, indirect or
consequential damages arising therefrom.
This warranty is expressly accepted by the buyer in lieu of any or all other warranties or
representations, express or implied, in fact or in law arising out of the sale of the property and of all
duties or liabilities of seller to the buyer arising out of the use of the property sold; and no agreement
or understanding varying or extending the same will be binding upon seller unless in writing and
signed by a duly authorized officer of seller. All electrical equipment carries standard manufacturer's
warranties.

Read ALL instructions prior to operating reducer. Injury to personnel or reducer failure may be caused
by improper installation, maintenance or operation.
Written authorization from GROVE GEAR / ELECTRA-GEAR is required to operate or use reducers in
man lift or people moving devices.
Check to make certain application does not exceed the allowable load capacities published in the

This instructions manual should be read together with all other printed information such as catalogs, supplied by
Grove Gear / Electra-Gear.
General Operation
1. Run the motor which drives the reducer and check the direction of reducer output rotation. Consult
motor nameplate for instructions to reverse the direction of rotation.
2. Attaching the load: On direct coupled installations, check shaft and coupling alignment between
speed reducer and loading mechanism. On chain/sprocket and belt/pulley installation, locate the
sprocket or pulley as close to the oil seal as possible to minimize overhung load. Check to verify that
the overhung load does not exceed specifications published in the catalog.

The system of connected rotating parts must be free from critical speed,
torsional or other type vibration, no matter how induced. The responsibility
for this system analysis lies with the purchaser of the speed reducer.

AGI Fabricated Airlock

AGI Fabricated Airlocks are used in pneumatic conveying systems, dust collection systems, and cyclone receiver installations to allow dry free-flowing materials to move between two areas of differing air pressure. The airlock has a rugged cast housing with inlet and outlet ports, a rotor, and a drive unit. It has multi-bladed rotor that picks up the material in the pocket between two blades as it rotates.
