Overview
In This Chapter
This chapter provides an introduction to the 8-port Ethernet Adapter card and 8-port Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter card used in the 7705 SAR-8 and the 7705 SAR-18:
Overview of the 8-port Ethernet Adapter Card and 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Card
Overview of the 8-port Ethernet Adapter Card and 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card
14 7705 SAR Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card Installation Guide
Overview of the 8-port Ethernet Adapter Card and
8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card
The 8-port Ethernet Adapter card has six RJ-45 ports and two small form-factor pluggable
(SFP) ports on its faceplate. The six RJ-45 ports are 10/100 Mb/s-capable ports that support
auto-sense and auto-negotiation.The two SFP ports are for 10/100/Gigabit Ethernet SFPs
(optical or electrical) and T3 SFPs. SFPs are hot-swappable input/output devices that plug
into the adapter card ports, linking the ports to fiber-optic or copper networks. See SFPs for
a list of supported SFP modules.
The 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card is designed to complement or replace the 8-port
Ethernet Adapter card in situations where greater processing power and higher throughput
capacity are required. The 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card has eight small form-factor
pluggable (SFP) ports on its faceplate. The eight SFP ports are for 10/100/Gigabit Ethernet
optical or electrical SFPs. See SFPs for a list of supported SFP modules.
The 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card is equipped with a universal -48 VDC to +24 VDC
power supply and is capable of a 1 or 2.5 Gb/s fabric interface. On the 7705 SAR-8, the card
supports a 1 Gb/s fabric interface. On the 7705 SAR-8 v2, the card supports a 1 or 2.5 Gb/s
fabric interface. Support for 2.5-Gb/s on the 7705 SAR-8 v2 requires use of the CSMv2. On
the 7705 SAR-18, the card supports a 2.5 Gb/s fabric interface.
8-port Ethernet Adapter Card Versions
There are two versions of the 8-port Ethernet Adapter card. The CLI identifier for version 1
is a8-eth and for version 2 it is a8-ethv2. Both versions are supported on the
7705 SAR-8. On the 7705 SAR-18, only version 2 is supported. The two versions are
identical except that version 2 adds support for synchronous Ethernet as a timing source, has
more memory for storage of MPLS labels, and supports a +24 VDC variant (+24 VDC power
is not supported on the 7705 SAR-18). For more information on synchronous Ethernet, refer
to the 7705 SAR OS Basic System Configuration Guide.
Note: Unless otherwise stated in this guide, the 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card
supports the same functions as the 8-port Ethernet Adapter card.
Overview
7705 SAR Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card Installation Guide 15
8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card Versions
There are two versions of the 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card. The CLI identifier for
version 1 is a8-1gb-sfp and for version 2 it is a8-1gb-v2-sfp. Both versions are
supported on the 7705 SAR-8 and the 7705 SAR-18. The two versions are identical except
that version 2 has more memory to support larger tables, such as FIBs, ACLs, and so on.
Note:
The electrical SFP (part number 3HE00062AA) does not support synchronous Ethernet
when used with version 2 of the 8-port Ethernet Adapter card.
Unless otherwise stated in this guide, 8-port Ethernet Adapter card means both
versions.
Note:
Unless otherwise stated in this guide, 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card means both
versions.
Higher limits are supported only when all the adapter cards in a particular node are
equipped with hardware for larger table support.

Table 3 lists the power consumption for the 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter card.
For information such as power consumption, environmental specifications, and adapter card
physical specifications for the 7705 SAR-8 or 7705 SAR-18 hardware, refer to the “System
Specifications” section in the 7705 SAR-8 Chassis Installation Guide and the 7705 SAR-18

Provisioning Requirements
To configure cards and ports, you must be able to access the 7705 SAR-8 or 7705 SAR-18
by console or Telnet connection. Refer to the 7705 SAR-8 Chassis Installation Guide or
7705 SAR-18 Chassis Installation Guide for information and instructions on console and
Telnet connections.
The CSM does not require provisioning. However, the IOM, which is an integral part of the
CSM software module, must be activated before any adapter cards and port parameters can
be provisioned and configured. The IOM is activated using the card and card-type CLI
commands to specify its slot number and card type. Adapter cards must be provisioned before
their ports can be configured.
Provision components in the following order:
1. Card slot number (use the card command)
2. Card type
3. Adapter card slot number (use the mda command)
4. Adapter card type
5. Ports
Note: The following provisioning requirements apply to IOMs and adapter cards:
IOMs are specified using the card and card-type commands (items 1 and 2 in the
list below).
Adapter cards are provisioned and configured using the mda and mda-type commands
(items 3 and 4 in the list below).
Provisioning an Adapter Card
20 7705 SAR Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Card Installation Guide
Provisioning an Adapter Card
After the IOM has been activated on the CSM (Steps 1 and 2 below), continue in the config
context with the following CLI commands to provision the adapter card. The steps below
describe how to provision an 8-port Ethernet Adapter card version 1 in slots MDA 1 and 2 on
a 7705 SAR-8.
The 7705 SAR-8 supports up to 6 adapter cards and the 7705 SAR-18 supports up to
12 adapter cards in any combination that does not exceed the maximum. However, for a
network application, at least one of the installed cards must be a network-capable adapter
card. Within this maximum, up to six 8-port Ethernet Adapter cards or 8-port Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter cards can be configured on a 7705 SAR-8 chassis and up twelve 8-port
Ethernet Adapter cards version 2 or 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter cards can be configured
on a 7705 SAR-18 chassis.
You can now install the adapter card. See Installing or Replacing an Adapter Card. If you
need to install an additional adapter card, continue the configuration process with Step 6
before installing the card:
Note:
1. The slot-number is always 1 and the card-type is always iom-sar.
