TROUBLESHOOTING: CAMERAS
There are four major things to check when your camera is not working:
-
The camera's power supply; commonly referred to as the wall adapter or power plug.
Look for loose or unplugged power adapters. Make sure the camera power supply is plugged in properly and securely to a wall outlet or surge protector. If you have
multiple cameras sharing a large power supply with a 4 or 8 way splitter cable, then also check that it is connected properly to outlet or surge protector. Make sure to
also check each individual split for loose connections. If all connections are plugged in securely but don't yet see your camera working properly then you can also
test the camera power supply for proper voltage output. You can test your camera power supply with a volt meter. Most standard Q-See cameras for example,
require 12 volts of power to run properly. If less than 12 volts then the power supply will need to be replaced. Make sure to test each individual power split as well. All
must read at least 12 volts.
- The camera's Video/Power Cable
Look for loose or unplugged Video/Power cables. Check the camera cable for any physical damage like cuts or severs and make sure both video and power
connections are securely plugged in. Check at the camera end of the cable and the opposite end by the DVR. Replace any defective cables as needed.
If you connect the camera to the cable being used by a camera that is working correctly does it still have the same problem? If so the problem is probably the
camera; if not, then the problem is the cable.
- Defective Video Channel (Input) on back of the DVR
Go to back of your DVR and find the cable of the camera you are testing, and then try connecting the cable to other channels (inputs) of the DVR. This will let you
know if your DVR has a defective input on back.
-Camera
If the camera's power adapter, cables, and DVR channel inputs seem in working order then that leaves the camera as being the culprit. An easy way of determining
this is to simply replace the camera itself with another working camera. Take the camera in question down as well as a good working camera and swap them. They
will be at this point being using each other's cables and power adapter or power split (if using a power supply with splitter cable). If camera in question remains in
non-working condition while the good camera still functions properly, then you know to replace the defective camera.
