DESCRIPTION/APPLICATION
Ranco G1 (SPST) and G4 (DPST) direct replacement remote bulb
temperature controls match the speci caons of the original
equipment manufacturer. These controls may be either xed-seng
or have a range of adjustment (see specicaons on back). They have
been manufactured with various mounng bracket and dial sha
conguraons,as well as vari ous capillary lengths and bulb sizes. These
variaons have been tailored to the specic applicaon. The switch on
both the G1 and the G4 opens on a rise in temperature. These controls
are used in a variety of heang-type applicaons which include control
of: clothes dryers and laundry presses cooking ovens, fryers, and coee
urns; space heaters; various indus trial process equipment. The G1 may
control an elec tric heang element or an electrically operated gas valve.
The G4 most commonly operates an electric heang element and its
double pole switch is used to break both sides of the electrical circuit.

PREINSTALLATION STEPS
1. Disconnect electrical power.
2. Refer to the equipment manufacturer’s service manual.
3. Note posion and roung of the control’s sensing element.
4. Record the electrical wire to terminal connecons.
5. If the sensing element enters a pressurized ng or well,
cauously relieve the pressure and remove the uid prior to
removal of the control.
6. Remove control, retaining the screws and any hardware required
for the replacement.
CAUTION
To prevent possible electrical shock or equipment damage, disconnect
electrical power to the unit before and during installaon. DO NOT
restore electrical power to unit unl the control is properly installed
and the cover is assembled. DO NOT locate the control in an explosive
atmosphere as a safety hazard can result due to possible spark generaon
in the control. Controls are not to be located in areas of signicant
moisture ,dirt or dust, or in a corrosive explosive atmosphere. Use
of controls in such environments may result in injury or damage to
the persons or property (or both) and are likely to shorten control life;
Ranco assumes no responsibility for any such use.
INSTALLATION OF NEW CONTROL
1. The p of the screws used to mount the control must not extend
through the mounng bracket so as to touch the control body.
2. Taking care to not twist the control body secure it to the original
mounng.
CAPILLARY CARE AND MOUNTING
1. Hold the capillary close to the control and careful ly uncoil the
required amount. Minimize rebending of the capillary which makes
it more suscepble to breakage.
2. If the original control had a protecve sleeve on the capillary,
transfer it to the new control.
3. DO NOT cut the capillary or bulb. Avoid sharp bends, kinks, strains,
or pinch marks in the capil lary. Never allow the capillary to rest
against sharp edges or rub against metal surfaces. Avoid expos ing
the bulb and capillary to extreme temperatures.
4. A drip loop should be provided in the capillary to prevent moisture
from reaching the control and causing an electrical short.
5. Excess capillary should be placed in an area as free as possible from
excessive heat. Secure any excess capillary in 3 inch coils to avoid
damage from vibraon and contact with electrical ter minals.
6. If the sensing element has a compression ng, hand start the
ng. Using a suitable wrench, se cure the ng.
DO NOT overghten.
CONTROL WIRING
1. Disconnect electrical power to the unit.
2. DO NOT exceed the electrical rangs listed below.
3. The control’s terminals must not be eld bent, cut o or modied.
4. Allow some slack in the wire to prevent stressing of the switch.
Provide a drip loop in the wiring to prevent water from reaching
the control.
5. Secure wires to prevent damage from heat, sharp edges, moving
parts, vibraon, etc.

CHECKOUT
Inspect work to be assured that all the above steps were taken. Start
up the unit and observe at least one full cycle. When applicable, check
compression  ng for leaks.
RECALIBRATION
1. Recalibraon is normally not advised nor neces sary. It should be
aempted only aer the equip ment has operated for three or more
full cycles and it has been determined that recalibraon is absolutely
necessary.
2. Use a suitable temperature measuring device in the proper locaon
to determine calibraon of control.
3. To recalibrate, carefully remove dial knob without moving the sha.
4. Securely hold the dial sha and recalibrate as fol lows: turn the screw
in the center of the dial sha clockwise to decrease temperature;
counterclockwise to increase temperature. 1/8 turn changes the
seng approximately 20°F.
5. Recheck operaon of equipment aer recalibraon.
