Quick Start Guide – MOTOROLA DEFY™ XT
Using Contacts
• To view your contacts, from the Home screen, tap the Phone icon. Tap the Contacts tab.
• To create a new contact, from the Home screen tap the Phone icon. Tap the Contacts
tab. Tap the Menu key. Tap New contact. Tap the desired place you would like to save the
contact to, i.e. Phone. To add an image to your contact, tap the thumbnail icon. Tap the
desired option, i.e. Select photo from Gallery. Tap the desired folder, i.e. Camera. Tap the
desired photo and drag, pinch and zoom the orange frame to the selection you wish to
set the thumbnail contact image to. Once nished, tap Save. Tap the Given name eld
and enter the contact’s rst name. Tap Next on the virtual keyboard. In the Family name
eld enter the contact’s last name. Tap Next on the virtual keyboard. Tap the Home button
under Phone and amend the label, i.e. Mobile - if you want to add the contact’s mobile
phone number. In the Phone eld, enter the contact’s mobile phone number. Tap Next on
the virtual keyboard. Tap the Home button under Email and amend the label, i.e. Work – if
you want to add the contact’s work email address. In the Email eld, enter the contact’s
email address. Tap Postal address if you would like to add a postal address. Tap the Home
button under Postal address and amend the label, i.e. Work – if you want to add the
contact’s work postal address. In the Street eld, enter the contacts street address. Tap the
City eld and enter the city details. Repeat these steps to add further address details. Scroll
down and repeat these steps to add Organisation details. To add further details, tap More.
Repeat the above steps to add further detail. When you are nished, tap Done.
• To change your contact numbers to NZ country code +64, long press the 0/+ key, so ‘+’
appears, enter “64, and then remove the rst 0 from the dialling code. The number will
read +64 27 123 4567 or +64 9 123 4567.
Using Favourites Contacts
To save time you can mark your frequently dialled contacts in your favourites and reduce time to search for them in your
contacts list:
• To add a contact to your Favourites’ list, tap the Phone icon. Tap the Contacts tab. Scroll to and tap the contact you wish to add
as a favourite. Tap the Favourites icon (star) on the top right so it turns green.
• To call a person from your Favourites list, from the Home screen tap the Phone icon. Tap the Favourites tab. Tap the Call icon
next to the desired contact’s name.
Using Messaging - Text, Voicemail and Email
To send a text message:
• From the Home screen, tap the Messaging icon. Tap New message. In the To eld, enter your contacts phone number – if
prompted scroll to and tap the contacts details already saved to the Phone/Sim. Tap the Type to compose eld and enter
the message. When you are nished, tap Send.
• To insert an attachment, tap the Menu key. Tap Attach. Tap the desired attachment type i.e. Pictures. Tap the desired
folder where the attachment is located i.e. Camera. Tap the desired image. When you are nished, tap Send MMS.
To check your voicemail:
• From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon. Long press the 1/
key. Enter your 4 digit pin number.
• A personal greeting makes all the dierence and means people are more likely to leave a message. Here is an example of
a personal greeting anyone can use: Hi, this is <your name>. I’m not available right now, but if you leave your name,
number and a brief message I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
To set-up an Exchange email account on your mobile:
• From the Home screen, tap the All apps icon. Tap Email. In the Email address eld, enter your Exchange email address.

Tap the Password eld and enter your password details. Tap Manual setup. Tap Exchange. Check and if required amend
the Domain\Username details. Tap the Server eld and amend if required. Ensure that the Use secure connection (SSL)
check box is ticked. Scroll to and tap Next. When prompted, read the Remote security administration message and tap
OK. Ensure you are happy with the Account options settings or tap to change. Tap Next. Enter a name for this account.
Tap Done. Read the Activate device administrator? message and tap Activate.
Changing your Prole
Proles are used to change your mobile phone settings for dierent situations:
• To quickly silence your mobile, press the Volume key down (on the right hand side of the phone) until you see the Mute/
Vibrate notication on the Ringer volume screen. To cancel the silent mode, press the Volume key up.
To customise your proles:
• From the Home screen, tap the Menu key. Tap Settings. Tap Sound. Tap on the desired settings. When prompted, select
the desired option and tap OK. Repeat the procedure if required. Tap the Home key to return to the Home screen.
TWorld - Mobile Internet and personalisation
TWorld is your gateway to the mobile Internet:
• To access TWorld, from the Home screen tap the All apps icon. Tap Browser. Y! TWorld is pre-set as your home page and
will automatically load when you open the Browser.
• To access social networking sites, such as Facebook, tap the All apps icon. Tap Facebook. Tap the Email eld and enter
your Facebook email address. Tap the Password eld and enter your Facebook password details. Tap Login.
• To browse the Internet, from the Home screen, tap the All apps icon. Scroll to and tap Search. Tap the Google search bar
and enter the search keywords or URL address. Tap on the suggested keywords which appear or tap Go on the virtual
keyboard to start the search.
• To manage your mobile account and view your usage metres, from the Home screen, tap the All apps icon. Tap Browser.
Y!TWorld is pre-set as your home page and will automatically load when you open the Browser Scroll to and tap
Your Telecom.
Using Bluetooth®
Bluetooth oers you fast reliable wireless connectivity over short distances (up to 10 metres).
• To create a Bluetooth connection you have to activate Bluetooth rst. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key, tap
Settings and tap Wireless & networks. Tap to tick the Bluetooth checkbox to turn the Bluetooth connection on and
activate.
Once Bluetooth is activated you can connect to other Bluetooth devices:s:
• Tap Bluetooth settings and tap to tick the Discoverable checkbox and activate. Tap Scan for devices and tap the desired
Bluetooth device you wish to pair with. Tap the Bluetooth pairing request eld and enter a PIN code (i.e. 0000). Tap OK.
Enter the same PIN code on the device you wish to pair with. The other device may be prompted to conrm the connection.
Tap the Home key to return to the Home screen.
Power Management
To extend the battery life of your mobile, follow these simple steps:
• Decrease the brightness of the screen. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key > Settings > Display. Tap Brightness. Ensure
the check box for Automatic brightness is not ticked. Scroll to the desired level of brightness e.g. lower on the scale to save
more power. Tap OK. Tap the Home key to return to the Home screen.
• Change the time-out after which the backlight is switched o. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key > Settings > Display >
Screen timeout. Scroll up and tap on the lowest timeout time i.e. 15 seconds. Tap the Home key to return to the Home screen.
• Set Bluetooth to o when not in use.
• Set Wi-Fi to o when not in use.
• Set GPS to o when not in use.
• Set Auto-Sync to o when your phone is not synchronising with the server.
