VAV II Balancing
Controllers
QUICK GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
The Honeywell Excel 10 VAV II Balancing Quick Guide
is intended to act as a on-the-job help for VAV Air
Balancers, Contractors, and Honeywell Technicians
balancing the Excel 10 VAV II family of controllers
using E-vision, LONSPEC™, or the hand-held tool. The
guide covers general troubleshooting tips, rules of
thumb, and step-by-step guides of these tools. The
guide is not intended to replace the Excel 10 VAV
software tools User Guides, but rather to act as a
supplement.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
Stable Airflow
When the VAV II controller is being balanced, the
configuration or balancing tool may indicate stable
airflow and allow balancing before the controller has
actually reached the balancing control setpoint. During
this period, if any measurements are made of the
actual airflow volume and entered while the controller
is still ramping to the airflow setpoint, erroneous
balancing results may be recorded.
IMPORTANT
Excel 10 VAV II Controllers must have an air
flow pickup table downloaded to ensure
accurate balancing. Configuration tools do
not automatically install the flow pickup table
defined for the controller.
If VAV II Controllers are not balancing, check
with the Honeywell Authorized technician or
Honeywell contractor that the flow pickup
table download to each controller has
occurred.
Testing Airflow Measurement
Anytime the controller’s airflow measurement process
is to be tested or troubleshooting is attempted, the
airflow must be constant. The VAV II controller should
be fixed at some desired or stable setpoint that is not
changed during troubleshooting or testing.
3 74-3965
Disconnecting Airflow Pickup Tubes
Anytime the airflow pickup tubes are disconnected
from the controller, the controller should be powered
down. There is no chance of damage to the controller,
but if the controller is exposed to unusually high static
pressure (< 5.0 in. w.c.) when one pickup tube is
connected there is a very slight possibility that the
controllers sensing process will stop operating. Should
this condition be suspected, simply cycle power to the
controller. It is not possible for this condition to occur
under normal operation with both airflow pickup tubes
connected to the controller.
Flow Pickup Pressure Physical
Measurement
Physical measurement of the flow pickup pressure for
the purpose of testing is best done with an instrument
capable of displaying pressure to 0.01 ±0.005 in. w.c.
Though electronic gauges and sensors often offer the
necessary accuracy, their sensitivity can cause
problems in field applications.
RULES OF THUMB
Balancing Airflow Setpoint Guidelines
All VAV II controllers must be balanced for both
minimum and maximum airflow for highest accuracy. If
the controller’s final configuration is to be a constant
volume unit, a minimum airflow balance is
recommended. The following guidelines are
recommended for flow volume setpoints.
74-3965 4
Table 1. Setpoint Guidelines.
If the guidelines outlined in Table 1 are enforced, then
most issues encountered with minimum airflow
balancing at the minimum setpoint are removed.
However, there are some symptoms that may require
minor adjustments.
Erratic or Unstable Airflow or
Zero / “Invalid” Display After Balancing
Unstable Airflow at Low Velocities
Check the damper drive parameters. If there is a rapid
cycling of the sensed airflow, when the balancing is
completed, unexpected and large air balance value
swings can occur. If this is noted, an adjustment of the
damper drive parameters may be required.
Airflow
Setpoint Rule
Maximum Maximum airflow setpoint cannot result in
a duct velocity greater than 3500 fpm
Maximum airflow setpoint must be greater
than the Minimum airflow setpoint
Minimum Minimum airflow setpoint cannot be set to
zero for balancing
Minimum airflow setpoint should be less
than or equal to 80% of the Maximum
airflow setpoint
5 74-3965
Minimum Airflow Setpoint too Close to
Maximum Airflow Setpoint
Decrease the value of the Minimum Airflow setpoint
and repeat the minimum airflow balance procedure.
Airflow Velocity Less Than 200 fpm
Check the velocity at the minimum airflow setpoint. If
the minimum airflow velocity is at or below 200 fpm, try
increasing the minimum airflow setpoint.
Airflow Sensor
If there are issues in the minimum airflow balancing,
one possible area to check is the operation of the
airflow sensor itself.
