1. INTRODUCTION

Thank you very much for purchasing our Keyboard Emulation Handy

Scanner, HC36IITK-A/HC36IIDTK-A/HC46IITK-A.

This operation manual explains the handling, connection, scanning,

and parameter setting of the handy scanner.

Please read through these instructions carefully. Environmental

conditions, connected PCs, application software, and other factors may

influence data communication to PCs.

After you have finished reading them, keep this manual handy for

speedy reference.

2. PRECAUTIONS

Handling

- Do not drop the scanner.

- Avoid letting the scanner undergo any physical shock or impact.

- Keep the scanner away from water.

- Do not use the scanner in any of the following environments:

- in dusty areas,

- in rain,

- where there are excessively high temperatures,

- in places exposed to direct sunlight,

- near a strong electric or magnetic field, or

- where static electricity can build into significant charges.

- Do not apply the reading window to printed characters, ruled lines,

wood grain, or other patterns other than bar codes.

- Do not pull the cable strongly.

- Do not insert any pointed object through the reading window.

Maintenance

- Do not wipe the scanner with thinner or benzene.

- Never disassemble the scanner.

Installation/Storage

Do not set up or store the scanner in places where:

- there are excessively high temperatures (e.g., near heating

equipment),

- it may be subject to vibration (e.g., on machinery),

- it may be exposed to water splash (e.g., near a bucket or water tank),

or

- the humidity is extremely high (e.g., in a greenhouse).

3. NAMES AND FUNCTIONS

- Reading window : Bring this window to a bar code to be scanned.

- Trigger switch : Press this switch to start scanning bar codes.

(except in continuous reading mode)

- Center mark : Align this mark with the center of a bar code to

be scanned.

- LED indicator : Illuminates in green when the scanner has read

the bar code successfully.

- Cable : Connects the scanner to the PC and keyboard.

The Y-type and straight types of

4. CONNECTING THE SCANNER TO YOUR PC

Connection

(1) Turn off the PC.

(2) Plug the connector(s) straight into the PC (and the keyboard or

numeric keypad). Be careful with the connector orientation.

(3) Turn on the PC.

(4) Set parameters by using the bar-coded parameter menu given in

Chapter 6 according to your needs.

NOTE: Connecting the scanner to some PCs may disable their

integrated keyboards. If it happens, use an add-on keyboard via the

Y-type cable. And be sure to set the connection type to "With

keyboard" in the bar-coded parameter menu given in Section 6.2.

NOTE: For a PC having a connector to be shared by keyboard

and mouse, a keyboard/mouse branch adapter made by the PC

manufacturer may be required. Check the add-on keyboard

connection provided in your PC.

Disconnection

(1) Turn off the PC.

(2) Pull out the connector straight from the PC (and the keyboard or

numeric keypad).

NOTE: When connecting or disconnecting cable connectors, hold

the connector housings not the cables. Pulling cables may result in

wire breaks or contact failure.

NOTE: When using a Y-type cable, do not pull the branch section

strongly.

5. SCANNING BAR CODES

Operating Procedure

(1) Turn on the PC. (Wait until the system is set up.)

(2) Run an application program (e.g., Microsoft® Excel) to be used

for barcode data entry.

(3) Bring the reading window to a bar code to be scanned and align

the center mark with the center of the bar code.

(4) Press the trigger switch (except in continuous reading mode).

When the scanner has read the bar code successfully, it beeps and

illuminates the LED indicator in green. The scanned data will

display on the PC screen.

Scanning Notes

- Make bar code labels as flat as possible.

- Avoid using the scanner in direct sunlight or extremely bright places.

The scanner might fail to read correctly.

- The scanner can read bar codes turned upside down.

- The scanner may fail to read bar codes covered with plastic films or

enclosed in plastic bags. Take out those bar code labels.

- To read the same bar code more than one time in succession in

continuous reading mode, pull the reading window away from the

scanned code for at least one second, make sure that the LED

indicator goes off, and then scan the code again.

6. SETTING PARAMETERS

You may easily set parameters for communications conditions,

readable bar codes, transmission formats and others, by using

bar-coded parameter menus.

Settings made from the bar-coded parameter menus will be retained

even after the PC is turned off.

To scan bar codes given in those bar-coded parameter menus, press

the trigger switch.

Beeper Volume Adjustment

You may adjust the beeper volume to three levels--High, Medium, and

Low. The factory default is High.

Scanning the bar code below will cycle through the High, Medium,

and Low.

Other Parameters

Parameters other than the beeper volume may be set according to the

procedure given on the following pages.

6.1 Parameter Setting Procedure

Using bar-coded parameter menus

(See Note 1.)

NOTE: To set parameters given in Sections 6.2 through 6.5, follow

the flowchart on the next page. To set ones given in Sections 6.6

and 6.7, follow the instructions given in each section.

NOTE: When using the bar-coded parameter menus, scan bar

codes without a 3-minute or longer interval. If more than three

minutes have passed after a bar code is scanned, the scanner

issues a long beep, cancels newly scanned parameters, and

returns to the previous settings.

Factory Defaults

The factory defaults differ depending upon the cable type connected to

the scanner as listed below.

- If a Y-type cable is connected, all parameters are set to their defaults

as given later.

- If a straight cable is connected, the connection type is set to

"Without keyboard" and other parameters are set to defaults.

CAUTION: The factory default of the keyboard type is "U.S.

English (101-key type). However, if you choose "All defaults," the

keyboard type will be set to "Japanese (106-key type)." You need

to choose your keyboard type on page 11.

Scan the “Start setting” bar code.

6.2 Setting Communications Parameters

Connection type

Choose the connection type--"With keyboard," "Without

keyboard," or "With numeric keypad."

To connect the scanner between a desktop PC and keyboard

(except a numeric keypad), choose this setting.

Also choose this setting when you connect the scanner and

add-on keyboard to a notebook PC.

6.3 Setting the Data Transmission Format

In the following format, data will be transmitted:

If you specify that the code mark follows bar code data, then data will

You may choose whether or not to transmit the code mark and the

number of digits, as well as choosing the data transmission format of

the header, terminator, and bar code data by using bar-coded

parameter menus.

In addition, you may define an arbitrary header and terminator from

the ASCII character set (00h to 7Fh) and some control codes keyed in,

as described in Section 6.6.

Number of Digits

The number of digits of bar code data will be displayed in two digits

on the PC screen.

NOTE: The number of digits will be omitted for UPC and EAN

codes.

Example: If the following bar code (Codabar) is scanned, it will be

displayed on the PC screen as listed below according to the conditions.

and check digit. The UPC-E data will be padded with zeros to

maintain the 11-character length format.

Note 6: You may choose whether or not to transmit start/stop codes.

For Codabar (NW-7), you may choose either lowercase letters

"a/b/c/d" or uppercase letters "A/B/C/D" for start/stop codes.

The start/stop codes for Code 39 are "*."

Note 7: When Code 128 is specified, data in the following format will

be regarded as an EAN-128 code.
