TheDI950withfilebasedprocessingsoftwareisasolutionthatprocessesmailwithahighdegreeofmail
runandmailpieceintegrity.ThefilebasedsoftwareworkswiththeDI950insertertoensurethatevery
mailpieceiscompletedwiththecorrectcontents.
ThissoftwareprovidescentralizedcontrolthatallowsthefilebasedsoftwarePCtocontroloperational
areasontheinserter.Thesoftwarecandetectinserterproblems.Whenmaterialjamsorinserter
problemsoccur,thesoftwarepinpointsthemswiftlytominimizemachinedowntime.
Thesolutionusesbarcodeddocumentsthatenableadedicatedcomputertokeeptrackofthepiece

How it Works
ThefilebasedprocessingsoftwarerunslocallyonthePCsuppliedwiththesystem.WhenPlanetPress
producestheprintedpiecesforthemailrun,italsocreatesaMailRunDataFile(MRDF).TheMRDF
includesspecificcustomerinformationforallofthemailpiecesintherun.WhentheMRDFiscreateditis
senttothefilebasedsoftwarePC.
WhentheoperatoropenstheMRDFforthefirsttime,twomorefilesarecreatedtohelpsupport
mailpieceintegrityduringprocessing-theInterlockandOutputfiles.
l Interlock file-containsonerecordforeachmailpieceandisusedtorecordstatus(good,bador
unknown).
l Output file-containsonerecordforeachmailpieceandisusedtorecordeverythingthathappens
tothatmailpiecewhileitisontheinserter
Eachpageinthejobhasabarcodethatcontainsinstructionsforeachassembledmailpiece.Thatbar
codealsocontainsapieceIDthatidentifieswhichassembledmailpiecethepagebelongsto.For
example,amonthlystatementwithabarcodeisfedintotheinserter.Thesystemreadsanddecodesthe
barcode,andthedecodedinformationisusedtoretrievetheinstructionsfromtheMRDFforassembling
themailpiece.
Astheinserterfeedsthepagesitreadsthebarcodes,andreportstothesoftwarethepieceIDofthe
pagebeingprocessed.ThesoftwarethenmatchesthepieceIDtoarecordintheMRDF,anditprovides
furtherinstructionstotheinserteronhowtoprocessthatspecificpageorassembledmailpiece.When
themailpieceisfinished,theinserterreportssuccesstobacktothesoftware.
OnceallthematerialinthejobisruntheOutputfilecreatesanadditionalfilecalledtheSelect file.The
Selectfileisusedtocreatereprintsfordamagedmailpiecesthatneedtobereprinted.Thisfileissentto
thePlanetPressPCandoncethereprintsareproduced,theyarerunusingtheSelectfile.

Term Definition
PieceID EachpagehasabarcodecontainingthepieceIDandthispieceIDconnectseachpageto
adatarecordcontainingthesamepieceIDintheMRDFfile.ThepieceIDsinamailrun
aresequential.
Barcode Thefilebasedprocessusesabarcodetoidentifyeachpagescannedontheinserter.The
barcodeisscannedandthedecodeddataisusedtofindthecontrolinformationinthe
MRDFfileandtodeterminehowtocollatetheincomingpages.
FileBasedProcessingPC AlloftheMRDFfilesarestoredonthefilebasedprocessingPC.ThisPCusuallyinterfaces
withthePlanetPresscomputersothattheMRDFandSelectfiles(usedforreprints)canbe
transferredbetweenbothcomputers.
Mailpiece Thisreferstoafinishedcollationcomprisedofoneormultipleassembledpages.
MRDF
(MailRunDataFile)
TheMRDFcontainsonerecordforeachpage.Thedatafromthisfileisusedtocontrolthe
assemblyofeachmailpiece,suchasnumberofpagestobeaccumulated,whichfeeders
shouldfeed,selectiveoutsorting,etc.
InterlockFile TheInterlocktracksthestatus(good,bad,unknown)ofeachassembledmailpieceasit
travelsthroughtheinserter.AnInterlockfileisautomaticallycreatedthefirsttimetheMRDF
isopenedontheinserter.
OutputFile TheOutputfilecontainsthedetailsforeachfinishedmailpiecewithinajob.Forexample,it
canincludewhetherthemailpiecereachestheoutputstacker,wasoutsortedbythe
system,islostduetoamaterialjam,wasremovedbytheoperatorandmore.
SelectFile TheSelectfileisautomaticallycreatedbytheOutputfile.Itcontainsonerecordforeach
mailpiecethatmayhavebeendamagedoroutsortedandneedstobereprinted.Thisfileis
senttoPlanetPressforcreatingthepiecesthatneedtobereprinted..
