These are supplementary instructions specific to the installation of heating cable on branch sprinkler systems
and are to be used together with the installation and maintenance instructions for self-regulating heater cable
(GA-1765).
HEAT TRACING SYSTEMS RELATED TO FIRE PROTECTION SERVICE
For use with all wattages of CLT, LT heater cables at 120, 208, 240 and 277V.
For use in Fire Protection Service:
1. Use on insulated appropriately listed or certified steel schedules 5, 10, 20 and 40 standpipe and sprinkler
system pipe up to and including 6 inch size. Includes use on elbows. tees, flanges, hangers and valves as
shown (see Nelson instruction booklet #GA-1765). Appropriately listed or certified fiberglass insulation with
a k-factor of 0.25-0.27 BTU-in / hr-°F-ft
2
@ 75
o
F (130-140 W/m-K @ 24
o
C) must be used. In locations that
may be exposed to moisture weatherproof cladding must be used.
2. For systems having piping which connects between buildings, in unheated areas, coolers or freezers where
the temperature is at or above -40
o
F (-40
o
C).
3. For use in Ordinary Hazard Occupancies only as specified in NFPA 13 the Standard for the Installation of
Sprinkler System. The system must comply with the obstruction requirements of NFPA 13 so that the
thermal insulation over the trace heating does not unacceptably obstruct the sprinkler or cover the wrench
boss.
4. Fire Suppression system heater circuits must be connected to monitoring equipment. A listed Power
Supervisory Relay with the appropriate voltage coil shall be connected in parallel prior to the heat tracing.
The output contacts of the Listed Fire Control Panel must have provisions for supervisory circuits.
5. For use with sprinkler heads with a minimum temperature rating of 155
o
F (68
o
C).
6. For proper selection of heating cable and connection kits refer to the Nelson Sprinkler Design Guide #GA-
2499.
Note: For Nelson Heat Trace Cable Installation see our Installation & Maintenance
Manual #GA-1765.

Notes:
Use 25mm (1”) non-oversize insulation on 51mm (2”) pipe and above.
Use 25mm (1”) over-size insulation on 38mm (1.5”) pipe and smaller.
For multiple cable installation and other details see installation manual GA-1765 for other cable
installation information.
To prevent electrical arcing and fire hazard, all cable connections and electrical wiring connections should be
sealed against moisture. This includes the use of proper cable sealing kits and the moisture proofing of all
wire connections.
The metal sheath/braid of the heating cable must be connected to a suitable ground path before electrical
power is connected to this equipment.
The heating cable assembly shall be permanently connected to the power supply.
Isolate electrical power supply before servicing.
Routine maintenance is required to maintain compliance with health and safety legislation:
Check the security of all cable entries on a routine basis.
Check that all electrical connections are tight and secure on a routine basis.
Check for physical damage and replace as required.
These systems are designed for use in areas subject to normal industrial levels of vibration. They are not
designed for use in areas subject to intentional or extreme conditions of vibration.
If backup power is being provided for the building electrical systems, it shall also provide backup power
supply for the trace heating system.
