INTRODUCTION
The UBI Stand-Alone Concept is a ready-to-use
label printing program for the EasyCoder 101 SA
and the EasyCoder 201 IISA direct thermal printers,
the EasyCoder 501 SA direct thermal/thermal trans-
fer printer and the corresponding EasyPak models.
Utilizing the flexible UBI Fingerprint 4.0 program-
ming language, the UBI Stand-Alone Concept of-
fers the printing of labels, tickets, tags or strip with
various layouts and fixed or variable information in
the form of text, bar codes, images, lines, boxes,
counters, time and dates.
The UBI Stand-Alone Program is easy to use and
requires no previous knowledge in programming.
The operator controls the printing via the built-in
membrane keyboard, an external alpha-numeric
ASCII keyboard, or a scanner, by responding to
prompts in the printer's display window.
Being completely self-contained, the printer only
needs a power supply. No computer connection is
necessary, although the printer is prepared for the
transferring of labels and layouts to, or from, a
personal computer, a computer network or another
printer.
This version of the UBI Stand-Alone Concept is
compatible with the UBI LabelShop label-editing
program for Microsoft Windows 3.1. In UBI Label-
Shop, labels and layouts can easily be produced
thanks to the WYSIWYG presentation. Then you
can then temporarily “dock” your UBI Stand-Alone
printer to the computer and download the labels and
layouts, before returning to independent operation.
The EasyCoder 101 SA and EasyCoder 201 II SA
both come in two versions with either a 6 dots/mm
printhead for accurate EAN/UPC bar code print-
ing, or an 8 dots/mm printhead for increased leg-
ibility and better reproduction of pictures and logo-
types. The EasyCoder 501 SA is available with an
8 dots/mm printhead, or an 11.81 dots/mm print-
head with suberb resolution.
Depending on printer model, a large number of
options can be installed, including paper cutter,
memory card adapter, interface boards, and various
types of paper handling equipment. Please refer to
the Technical Description for the printer model in
question for further information.

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL
This manual is intended to contain all information
necessary for installing and programming a UBI
Stand-Alone printer without any assistance from
the distributor.
Since some information is particular for each printer
model, this manual is supplemented by the User's
Manual and the Technical Description for the
printer model in question.
Being designed to fulfil the demands of many
different applications, the UBI Stand-Alone Con-
cept contains a lot of functions, some of which may
not be of immediate interest to you. Furthermore,
the printer's operator may not be concerned with
other functions than ordering the printing of prepro-
grammed labels, possibly after having added cer-
tain input data, whereas the installer or system
manager will require information on setup, backup,
layout editing etc.
The list on the following pages contains all imagi-
nable steps in consecutive order, from unpacking
the printer via the editing and printing of a label to
the backup on a personal computer. Each step
contains a reference to another manual or a page in
this manual, where you can find in-depth informa-
tion on the subject, should you be interested.
To facilitate the training of operators, who will not
concern themselves with other tasks than printing
labels or entering input data, you will find a Quick
Reference Guide at the end of this manual. Cut it out
and post it at the printer.
Before you start, please take a quick look at the
description on how to use the various keys and at the
graphic illustrations of the Stand-Alone Concept on
pages 9–16. You will find some useful short-cuts
and get a better overview on how the program is
designed. Later on, when you have become better
acquainted with the program, you can use these
pages to refresh your memory or as a quick refer-
ence guide.
Information in this manual is subject to change without prior notice and does not represent a commitment
on the part of UBI Printer AB.

U/M = User's Manual
T/D = Technical Description
USING THE UBI STAND-ALONE PRINTER
Unpacking See U/M & T/D
Unpack the printer and check that it has not been visibly
damaged during transport. As standard, all UBI Stand-Alone
printers are equipped with:
• 512 kbyte RAM memory
• Real-time clock circuit (RTC)
• One serial communication channel for RS 232C.
Voltage Check See U/M
Check that the printer is set up for the correct voltage.
Printer Modifications See T/D
If you want to make any modifications to the printer, e.g., change
some straps or fit an optional interface board, do so before you
connect the printer to a mains supply. Although such steps are
described in the Technical Description, we strongly recommend
the assistance of a skilled technician!
Connection of External Equipment See T/D
Connect possible external devices, e.g., a PC, another printer, an
external keyboard and/or a scanner, to the printer. A printer has,
as standard, one serial communication port ("uart1:"), which can
be supplemented by one or two additional ports by means of
various optional interface boards.
• If you want to transfer data to or from the printer, e.g., in order
to download labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop, you should
reserve the serial communication port "uart1:" for that purpose.
• An external keyboard can be connected to any serial commu-
nication port, i.e. "uart1:", "uart2:" or "uart3:", provided both the
port and the keyboard are set up for the same protocol.
• An external device, such as a scanner, can be connected to any
free communication port, serial or parallel, provided both the
port and the device are set up for the same protocol.
Paper Load See U/M & T/D
Load the printer with a supply of thermal transfer paper, or – in
case of EasyCoder 501 SA – of paper and thermal transfer
ribbon. See the User's Manual for loading instructions and the
Technical Description for paper/ribbon specifications.
Important: Whenever you load a new supply of paper, perform
at least one paper feed by pressing the < Feed > key.
Power On See page 17
Turn on the power to the printer by means of the switch on the
rear plate.

Setting Up the Printer See T/D & page 18
Printers delivered directly from factory are always set up the
same way, as listed below. If you are not sure if the setup has been
changed, or if you want to change the setup yourself, you can list
the present setup and enter the printer's Setup Mode, where you
can change any of the parameters.
National Characteristics See page 20
As default, the printer is set up for the following national
characteristics:
• Character set: Roman 8
• Time type: 24-hour cycle
• Date structure: YYMMDD (YY=year, MM=month, DD=day)
• Decimals: Decimal point
If necessary, change the characteristics to better suit the country
or area where you intend to use your labels.
Paper Cutter Disable See page 22
If your printer is fitted with an optional paper cutter, it is
automatically enabled at startup, but you can turn it off if you
like.
USING THE UBI STAND-ALONE PRINTER, cont'd.
Note:
Transfer of labels and layouts from UBI
LabelShop or the use of the UBI External
Keyboard require the character length
to be changed from 7 bits to 8 bits on the
port used fore the connection.
UBI Stand-Alone Concept
7
Label-taken Sensor Enable See page 23
The optional label-taken sensor detects any label left in the feed-
out slot and prevents the printing of more labels until it has been
removed. As default, the label-taken sensor is off, but you can
easily turn it on.
Setting the Clock See page 24
The printer is fitted with a real-time clock circuit (RTC) which
helps the software keep record of the time and date. At delivery,
the clock was set according to Swedish Mean Time (usually 1
hour earlier than GMT), but if you are going to use your printer
in another time zone, you must reset the clock.
External Keyboard Connection See page 26 & T/D
As an option, the printer can be fitted with the UBI External
Keyboard. Before installation, you must choose a communica-
tion port to which the keyboard is to be connected. You must also
set the character length to 8 bits and enable the external +5V on
the communication port in question.
External Device Connection See page 28
The printer can also be fitted with some other external device,
like a scanner. Before it can be used, you must inform the
software to which communication port this device is connected.
Now the printer is prepared and you can start the work of editing and
printing labels.
Editing Layouts See page 29
Layouts is the generic term for the various types of fields that
contain the information on the label, ticket, tag or strip. Some
fields are provided with information when the layout is edited,
while others just contain formatting parameters for information,
that is added later. To be able to print a label, you must have at
least one layout.
Listing Layouts See page 66
After having edited a number of layouts, a list of all layouts in
the printer's memory may be useful.
Deleting Layouts See page 67
Obsolete layouts can be removed in order to save valuable
memory space.
Preparing the Printer,
cont'd.
USING THE UBI STAND-ALONE PRINTER, cont'd.

8
Editing Labels See page 69
A label is a combination of a layout and variable input data. Even
if there are no input fields in a layout, you must still link it to a
label before it can be printed, but usually a layout contains some
fields which require input of variable information. After a label
has been provided with input data, you can save it for later use.
Printing Labels See page 74
Single labels can be printed during the label editing process, but
if you want more than one copy or a batch of several labels, you
should use the label printing facility.
Listing Labels See page 77
After having edited a number of labels, a list of all labels stored
in the printer's memory helps you to keep record.
Deleting Labels See page 78
Obsolete labels can be removed in order to save valuable
memory space.
Data Transfer See page 80
When you have edited a number of layouts and labels, it is
recommended to make a backup to avoid the risk of losing all
your work. You can take backup on a personal computer or on
another identical UBI Stand-Alone printer.
There is also a convenient way of transferring data from one
printer to another, so you do not have to edit the same layouts and
labels on several printers.
Downloading of labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop is
controlled from the PC and requires no action to be taken on the
printer, beside connecting the cable and adapting the communi-
cation setup to 8 bits character length.
Editing Label and Layout Files See page 85
After having copied the content of the memory from a printer to
a computer, it is possible to open the file and make changes or
additions, following a special syntax. Then the file can be down-
loaded to the same printer or an infinite number of other UBI
Stand-Alone printers.
This concludes the list of features in the UBI Stand-Alone Concept.
Unless you are familiar with the programming of label printers, we
recommend that you concentrate on those features that are marked
with a black box (
) and follow the examples given in the explana-
tory chapters. After having become familiar with the concept, you
can try out more functions according to your requirements.

Turn on the power by means of the switch on the printer's rear plate
and check that the Power control lamp on the front panel comes on.
While the printer loads the program, a message will appear in the
display window:
UBI STAND-ALONE
Please wait 1min
The first time the program is loaded, the printer will feed out two
blank labels in order to adjust itself to the paper web. Then a new
message will appear in the display window:
Select Mode
1:Run 2:Set
This is the Main Stand-Alone menu. When it is displayed, the
printer is ready for operation. All explanations, that will follow later
on, start from this menu.
As the menu implies, the program works in two modes, Set Mode
and Run Mode:
The Set Mode is used to create layouts consisting of various
types of fields, e.g. a line of text or a bar code. In the Set Mode
you can also delete layouts, produce various types of lists,
change the printer's setup, set up the printer for various national
characteristics, set the time and date and control the connection
of external equipment and the transfer of data.
The Run Mode is used to create labels, i.e. combinations of
layouts and variable input data, that are entered in the Run Mode.
You can order the printing of single labels or batches of labels
in variable quantities. There are also facilities for listing and
deleting labels.
Operators – who only need to select a label, add information and
order the printing – do not have to concern themselves with the Set
Mode, since they can perform their tasks without ever leaving the
Run Mode.
STARTING UP THE PRINTER
Power On
Main Stand-Alone Menu
IMPORTANT!
The printer's RAM memory and clock require current from a battery to retain
their content. The NiCd battery is automatically recharged when the printer
is on. After having installed the printer, leave the power on overnight to allow
the battery to become fully recharged. If the printer is turned on less than full
working hours, it is recommended to leave the power on overnight at least
once a week. Do not leave the printer off for several weeks (e.g. during holi-
days) without having made a full memory backup on a computer disk.

If you are not sure how the printer presently is set up, you can start
by printing a list of the setup. Then you can enter the printer's setup
mode and change the parameters you need.
Starting from the Main Stand-Alone Menu, proceed like this:
Select Mode
1:Run 2:Set
Select the Set Mode by pressing < 2 >.
1:Layout 2:Setup
3:Transm 4:Date
Select the Setup option by pressing < 2 >.
1:List 2:Printer
3:Nat 4:Cut 5:LT
Select the List option by pressing < 1 >.
After a few moments the printer will print a list of its current setup
values. Please refer to the Technical Description of the printer
model in question for further information on setup parameters.

Note that inside the Setup Mode, you must use the printer's built-in
keyboard. In case of EasyCoder 101 SA and 201 IISA, no encoding
is required. The UBI External Keyboard does not work in the Setup
Mode.
When finished, press the < Save > key on the printer's built-in
keyboard to return to the main menu of the Set Mode:
