Installation

• Iftheproductistobeusedasareplacementforanexistingcontrolunit/motor,thenrstremovetheold

componentsfromyourmodel.

• Mountapiniongearsuitableforthedrivegearaswellastheshaftdiameterofthenewmotortothedrive

shaftofthebrushlessmotor.Thepiniongearisgenerallyafxedwithagrubscrew.

Warning!

 Ensurethatthegrubscrewsitsexactlyontheattenedsideofthe

driveshaftandisscrewedtight inthatposition(seetheschematic

diagramontheright,withoutthegear)otherwisethepiniongearwill

quicklyloosen.

 Theexactpositionofthepiniongearonthedriveshaftmustbedeterminedafterthemotoris

mounted.Thus,onlytightenthepiniongearlightlyinitially.

• Mountthemotorinyourvehicleandscrewitintoplace.Onlyusesuitablescrewsthatcannotprotrude

toofarintothemotor.Aftermounting,alwayscheckiftherotorinthemotorcanbeeasilyrotatedandthat

nogrindingsoundscanbeheard.Ifthisisnotobserved,themotorcanbedamaged;lossofwarranty!

 Thedistancebetweenthepiniongearandthedrivegearwillbesetlater,itiscurrentlynot

important.

• Nowcheckthatthepiniongearcomesintoexactcontactwiththedrivegearandisnot

skewedtotheside.

Warning!

 Theexactpositionofthepiniongearisveryimportant,itmustnotbeskewed

tothesideasotherwisethedrivegearwillbedamaged(thetransferofpower

occursoverasmallerarea).

• Correctthemountingpositionofthepiniongearonthedriveshaft;themotormayhave

tobedismountedagain.

 Onlywhen the pinion gear sits exactly parallel onthedriveshaftshouldthegrubscrewbe

tightenedrmly.Thefasteningscrewofthemotorpiniongearmustbesecuredagainstcoming

looseusingthreadlocker.

• Afterthecorrectmountingofthepiniongearonthedriveshaftofthemotor,thecorrectdistancebetween

thepiniongearandthedrivegearmustnowbeset.

Generally,whendealingwithmotormounts,onemountholewillberoundandtheotherwillbeoblong.

Themotoristhusattachedwiththescrewintheroundholeandcanbeadjustedwiththeoblonghole.

• Loosenbothscrewsalittle,sothatthemotorcanbeturnedwithasmallamountofforce.

 Thedistancebetweenthepiniongearandthedriveshaftshouldnotbetoosmallandshould

alsonotbetoolarge,asthedrivegearwillbedamagedotherwise.

 Thedistanceissetcorrectlywhentheanksofthegearsengagefullyandthedrivecanbero-

tatedwithoutincreasedeffort.Alwayscheckthemotorattachmentandthepositionofthemotor

piniongearinrelationtothemaingearaftertherstdrives.

 Incorrectadjustmentscanbenoticedasincreasedwearofthemotorpiniongear/maingear.

• Screwthemotortightwhenitisinthecorrectposition.

• Nowmountthecontrolunitinthevehiclechassis.Choosealocationwhichisasfaraspossiblefromthe

receiver.Thecontrolunitshouldalsonotbedirectlynexttothemotor.Whendoingso,makesurethat

theloweroftheredandgreenLEDmountedbelowthethreemotorconnectioncablescanstillbeseen

whenmounted.

• Connectthecablesofthespeedcontrollerwiththecablesofthemotor;payattentiontopossiblecolour

coding.Thisensuresthattheforwards/backwardsmovementofthemotorandofthespeedcontroller

correspond.

 Iflaterthemotor'srotationdirectionisincorrect(dependingonthevehicle'stransmission),then

simplyswapthetwomotorconnections.Themotorthenrotatesintheotherdirection.

• ForattachingthespeedcontrolleraVelcrostrapordouble-sidedadhesivetapecanbeused.

• Checktoseeifthefourmountingscrewsofthefanaretight(alsocheckthisregularlyafterusingthe

vehicle).

Important!

 Themotorcontainedinthesetisonlysuitableforoperationwitha2-cellLiPobattery(nominal

voltage7.4V)ora4-to6-cellNiMHbattery(nominalvoltage4.8-7.2V).

 Ifyouconnectabatterywithmorecellstothespeedcontroller,thespeedcontrollerand/orthe

motorwillbedamaged.Thewarrantywillbevoid!

 Ifyouconnectadifferentmotorthatissuitableformorecellstothespeedcontroller,always

payattentiontotheturnsofthemotor;seetable.Furthermore,youmustreplacethefanonthe

speedcontrolleragainstanotherversionthatcanfunctionwithhighervoltages.Non-adherence

willcausedamagetothefanand/orspeedcontroller!Thewarrantywillbevoid!

• Theon/offbuttonwiththeprogrammingbuttonistobeattachedsothatitcanbeeasilyoperated.Thisalso

requiresattachmentwithVelcroordouble-sidedtapeorsimilar.

• Positionallcablessothattheycannotbecomeentangledinrotatingormovingpartsofthevehicle.Use

cabletiestoafxthem,forexample.

aresplash-proof.

Dependingontheversion,theproductcanbeinstalledinmonstertrucks,truggies,on-roadvehicles.

ThespeedcontrollerisprogrammedwithaprogrammingbuttonandtwoLEDs.

Forsafetyandapprovalreasons,youmaynotconvertand/oraltertheproduct.Ifyouusetheproductfor

purposesotherthanthosedescribedabove,theproductmaybedamaged.Furthermore,improperusecan

causeriskssuchasshort-circuits,re,etc.Pleasereadtheoperatinginstructionscarefullyanddonotdis-

longer"drivesunderwater"destroythemotorand/orspeedcontroller.

• Alwaysdisconnect the battery fromthespeedcontrollerifyoudo not use it.Ifthespeed

controllerisnotusedforshortperiods,itcanbedeactivatedviatheOn/Offswitch.

• Alwaysturnonthetransmitterrstbeforeconnectingthespeedcontrollerwiththebattery

andswitchingiton!

Beforeturningoffthetransmitter,turnoffthespeedcontrollerand,ifnecessary,separateit

fromthebattery.

• ThespeedcontrolleralongwiththemotorsuppliedcanbeusedwithNiMH/NiCdbatteriesas

wellasLiPobatteries.Theadmissiblenumberofcells,etc.canbefoundinthetableinthe

chapter"TechnicalData".

• Onlyoperatethespeedcontrollerwithabatterypack,butneverwithapoweradapter.

• Depending on the application (on-road or off-road) and track surface (tarmac, sand,

grass),differentcurrentvaluesmust be observedforoperation.Pleasenote thetechnical

specicationsintheseoperatinginstructions.Nonobservanceofthelimitvaluesmaydestroy

motorand/orspeedcontroller.Thewarrantywillbevoid!

• The motor as well as the speed controller and the battery can become very hot during

operation.Riskofburns!

• Make sure that body parts or objects are kept away from rotating parts when handling

vehicles.Riskofinjury!

• Onlyconnectonesinglebrushlessmotortothespeedcontroller.

• Thebrushlessspeedcontrollerisnotsuitablefortheoperationofconventionalelectricmotors

withtwoconnections!

• Keep the biggest possible distance between receiver and speed controller/motor for the

installation,toavoidinteraction.

• Donotinstallthereceiver'santennacableparalleltothecurrent-carryingcables.

• Donotbundletheantennacableofyourreceiver,butuse,e.g.,anantennatubethatprotrudes

verticallyfromthevehicle.

• Alwaysswitchonthetransmitterrstandbringitsoperatingleverforthemotorfunctionto

theneutralposition(motoroff).Onlyafterthat,connectthespeedcontrollertothebattery

packandswitchiton.Whenswitchingoff,proceedinreverseorder;rstswitchoffthespeed

controlleranddisconnectitfromthebattery,thenswitchoffthetransmitter.

• Duringoperationofthemodel,sufcientcoolinghastobeprovidedforthespeedcontroller

aswellasthemotor.Nevercoverthecoolingelementandthefanofthespeedcontroller!

• Checkthefunctionofthefaneverytimeyouswitchiton;donotobstructthefanandremove

dustanddirtfromthefan,whichmayhaveaccumulatede.g.,duetousingthevehicle.

Programming

a) Programming of full throttle and idle position

Toprogrammethefullthrottlepositionforforwards/backwardsdrivesandtheidleposition,proceedasfol-

lows:

• Switchonthetransmitterandleavethethrottle/brakeleverinidleposition.Movethetrimfordrivefunction

intothemiddle.PathlimitsandABSmustnotbeprogrammed,ifcomputertransmittersareused.Ifthe

programmedoesnotworkasdesired,thecontroldirectionofthethrottlelevermustbesettoreverse.

• Switchoffthespeedcontrollerandthenconnectthedrivebattery.

• Keepthesetupbuttonpresseddownandswitchonthespeedcontrol-

ler.ReleasethesetupbuttonimmediatelywhentheLED(seeimage

ontheright)inthespeedcontrollerstartsashingredandthemotor

emitsasoundsignal.

 Thesoundsignaliscausedbybrieyactivationofthebrush-

lessmotor.However,dependingonthemotoritcanbevery

mutedoryoumaynothearit.Inthiscase,payattentiontothe

LEDsonthespeedcontroller.

• Now,presstheprogrammingbuttononcewiththethrottle/brakeleverin

idle.TheLEDonthespeedcontrollerbrieyashesgreen.Themotor

emitsasoundsignal.

• Movethethrottle/brakeleverintofullthrottlepositionforforwardsmovement(pullthethrottle/brakelever

allthewaytowardsthehandle)andholditinthisposition.Now,presstheprogrammingbuttononce.The

LEDashestwiceingreen.Themotoremitsasoundsignal.Thefullthrottlepositionforforwarddriving

issaved.

• Movethethrottle/brakeleverintofullthrottlepositionforbackwardsmovement(pullthethrottle/brakelever

allthewayforwardsawayfromthehandle)andholditinthisposition.Now,presstheprogrammingbutton

once.TheLEDashesthreetimesingreen.Themotoremitsasoundsignal.Thefullthrottlepositionfor

reversedrivingissaved.

• Releasethethrottle/brakesothatitsitsintheidleposition.TheLEDashesthreetimesingreen.The

motoremitsasoundsignal.Theprogrammefortheidlepositionissaved.Motorandspeedcontrollerare

readyforoperationafterapprox.threeseconds.Ifyouswitchonthespeedcontrolleragain,itisnowready

foroperationwiththesettingsmadeabove.

b) Programming of Special Functions

 Withaseparatelyavailableprogrammingboard,allpossiblesettingsofthespeedcontrollercan

beprogrammedveryeasily.Payattentiontothenotesonwww.conrad.comonthecorrespond-

ingproductpage.

• Connectthe speed controller withadrivebattery,press the programming button(keeppressed!)and

switchonthespeedcontroller.TheredLEDashes.

PressandholdtheprogrammingbuttonuntilthegreenLEDashes.

Youarenowintheprogrammingenvironmentandyoucanprogrammethemenuitemsdescribedbelow.

 The5menuitemsaredisplayedinanendlessloop.

 1xashismenuitem1,2xashesismenuitem2,etc.uptomenuitem5.Subsequently,the

loopstartsagainwithmenuitem1.

 Oncethedesiredmenuitemisreached(1,2,3,4or5),youcanreleasetheprogrammingbut-

ton.Youarenowinthesub-menuoftheselectedmenuitem.

 TheredLEDnowsignalsthecurrentsettingfortheselectedmenuitem.

• Toselectthedesiredsettinginthesub-menu(fordescription,seec),presstheprogrammingbuttonuntil

theredLEDandtheemittedsoundssignalthedesiredsetting.

• Onceyouhaveselectedandprogrammedthedesiredsetting,switchoffthespeedcontroller.Thiswill

savethesetting.Ifyouwanttoprogrammeanothermenuitem,youmuststarttheprogrammingprocedure

again.

c) Available programming options

Menu item 1 = Drive mode

Here,youcanspecifythedrivemode(1=onlyforwardspossible;2=backwardsandreversepossible).

Whentogglingbetweenforwardsandreverse,themodeisnotswitchedimmediately,butwithapauseto

protectthegears,wheelsandbatterycapacity.

Menu item 2 = Motor brake

Ifthethrottleleveronthetransmitterismovedfromtheforwardspositiontoidle,themotorbrakeisactivated.

Thisfunctioncorrespondstothemotorbrakeina"real"car,whenyouliftyourfootofftheacceleratorpedal

butdonotsteponthebrakepedal.

Themotorbrakecanbeprogrammedineightsteps.Thehigherthesetvalue,thestrongerthebrake.The

followingvaluescanbeset:

1=0%;2=5%;3=10%;4=15%;5=20%;6=25%;7=30%,8=40%

Menu item 3 = Low-voltage detection

Thelow-voltagedetectionispossiblefortheoperationofthemodelwithLiPoaswellasNiMHbatteries.It

isparticularlyrecommendedtoactivatethisfunctionwhenusingLiPobatteriestoavoiddangerousdeep

dischargeofthebatteries.

ForLiPobatteries,thesetvaluesrefertoonevoltagevalueperbatterycell.

Example:When3.0Visset,a2-cellbatterywouldreachthelow-voltagethresholdatabatteryvoltageof

6.0V(2cellsx3.0V=6.0V).Thespeedcontrollerwouldnowswitchoffthemotortoavoiddeepdischarge

ofthebattery.

IfyouuseaNiMHbattery,thecalculationofthenumberofcellsisdonebasedonthebatteryvoltagemeas-

uredbythespeedcontrollerwhenswitchingon.Ifavoltageof9.0to12.0Visdetectedafterswitchingonthe

speedcontroller,itisswitchedoffasifusinga3-cellLiPobattery.Ifavoltageoflessthan9.0Visdetected,

thespeedcontrollerisswitchedoffasifusinga2-cellLiPobattery.

Example:Ifyouconnectafullycharged6-cellNiMHbatterywithapprox.8.4Vofbatteryvoltageandthe

shutdownvoltageper(LiPo)cellissetto2.6V,thelow-voltagedetectionwillswitchoffthemotorwhena

batteryvoltageof5.2V(2x2.6V=5.2V)isreached.

Thefollowingsetupvaluesarepossible:

1=nolow-voltagedetection;2=2.6V/cell;3=2.8V/cell;4=3.0V/cell;5=3.2V/cell,6=3.4V/cell

 Werecommendtoset3.2V/cellforLiPobatteries.

 Thebatteryvoltageismonitoredpermanently.Ifalow-voltageisdetectedevenmomentarily,the

powerisreducedto50%fortwoseconds.Themotorisswitchedoffafteranother10seconds.

IfthevoltageofaLiPobatteryislessthan3.5Vpercell,thespeedcontrollercannolongerbe

activated.Inthiscase,stopdrivingandrechargethebatteryfully.

Menu item 4 = Start dynamics

Youcansetthestartdynamicswiththisfunction.1=soft;2=medium;3=high;4=veryhigh.

Thehigherthesetvalue,themoreaggressivethemotorreactstothecontrolcommandsmadeatthetrans-

mitter.Itisimportanttonotethatthebatterycandeliverthecurrentrequiredforthis(useLiPobatterywith

higherC-rate).Ifthemotor"stutters"onthehigheststartdynamicslevelandthebatteryisnotat(orpowerful

enough),thegearratiomighthavetobechanged.

Menu item 5 = Brake effect

Hereyoucansetthebrakeeffectwhenmovingthecontrolleveratthetransmitterduringforwardsdrivinginto

theendstoppositionreverse(orbrake).

Thefollowingvaluescanbeset:1=25%;2=50%;3=75%;4=100%.

 Thehigherthesetvalue,thestrongerthebrakeeffect.Thehigherthebrakeeffectisset,the

higherthestressexperiencedbygearsandwheels.

d) Restoring factory settings

Ifyoupresstheprogrammingbuttonforapprox.threesecondswiththespeedcontrollerswitchedon,thered

andthegreenLEDwillashatthesametime.Afterwards,onlytheredLEDashesandthereforeindicates

thatthefactorysettingswererestored.

Whenrestoringtofactorysettings,allpreviouslymadesettings,includingidlepositionprogrammesarereset.

Afterwards,youmustprogrammethespeedcontrolleragainstartingwiththeprogrammingoftheidleposi-

tion.

Todothis,switchoffthespeedcontrollerandstartre-programming(see"Programmingoffullthrottleand

idleposition").

Connection to the Receiver

Connectthethree-poleplugofthe speed controller to the correspondingchannel ofthe receiver.Make

absolutelysureyouhavethecorrectreceiverconguration(seeoperationinstructionsforthereceiveras

wellastheinscriptiononthereceiver).

Yellow/white/orangeconnectingline:Controlsignal

Redcable:Operatingvoltage

Brown/blackcable:GND/Minus

 ThespeedcontrollerfeaturesaBEC.Thismeansthatthebatterysuppliesthereceiverdirectly

withpowerviathespeedcontroller.IftheBECisusedasthepowersupplyofthereceiverunit,

donotuseareceiverbattery!

Important!

 IfaseparatereceiverpowersupplyisusedinsteadoftheintegratedBEC,theredwireinthe

middleof the speed controller'sthree-pin receiver plughasto be interruptedandinsulated.

Failuretocomplywiththisindicationwilldestroythetripcontroller!Thewarrantywillbevoid!

General Operating Information

voltage7.4V)ora4-to6-cellNiMHbattery(nominalvoltage4.8-7.2V).

• Whenthespeedcontrollerisswitchedon,thegreenLEDashescorrespondingtothenumberofcellsof

theconnectedLiPobattery(e.g.,2-cellLiPobattery=2xashes).Asoundsignalisemittedasoftenas

theLEDashes.ThespeedcontrollerisreadyforoperationwhennoneoftheLEDsashesafterwards.

• Ifthespeedcontrollerdetectsanunusualvoltageafterswitchingon,itwillemitacorrespondingwarning

sound(2beeps,1secondpause,2beeps,1secondpause,etc.).

Inthis case, check the battery (voltage, charge) and the plug connection between battery and speed

controller.

• Ifthespeedcontrollerdetectsanerroneouscontrolsignalfromthereceiverafterswitchingon,itwillemita

correspondingwarningsound(1beep,2secondpause,1beep,2secondpause,etc.).

Checkthetrimofthethrottleleverorleavethethrottleleverinthemiddleposition(idleposition)when

switchingonthespeedcontroller.

• TheredLEDashesduringforwardsandreversemovementsorforthecorrespondingcontrolsignalofthe

transmitter.ThegreenLEDisalsoonwhendrivingforwardsat100%throttle.

If100%brakeeffectissetinmenuitem5,thegreenLEDalsoashesbriey.

• Whenchangingbetweenforwardsandreverse,thethrottlemustbeputbrieyintotheneutralposition

(about2seconds).Ifthethrottleisshifteddirectlyfromforwardstoreverse,thespeedcontroller'sbrake

willbeactivated(thevehiclewillNOTgobackwards!).

• Ifthedriveorbrakefunctionisoppositetothemovementofthethrottleleveratthetransmitter,activatethe

reversefunctionatthetransmitterorswapanytwoofthethreemotorcables.

• Ifthespeedcontrollerisusedwitha3-cellLiPobattery(or7-to9-cellNiMHbattery),thefactory-tted

fanmustbereplacedbyahigh-voltagetype(seeoptionalaccessoriesontheproductwebpage).Non-

adherencewillcausedamagetothefanand/orspeedcontroller!Thewarrantywillbevoid!

• Thefunctionofthefanmustbecheckedbeforeandaftereachdrive.Thisappliesinparticularwhenthe

vehiclecameincontactwithwater.Ifindoubt,thefanmustbedismountedandcleaned.

• Thespeedcontrollerswitchesoffthemotorforsafetyreasons,ifitgetstoohot.Inthiscase,stopdriving

andchecke.g.,thegeartransmissionandthefunctionofthefanonthespeedcontroller.

• Ifthespeedcontrollerdoesnotdetectarotationspeedsignalforlongerthan0.2secondsduringdriving,

themotorisswitchedoff.Inthiscase,checkthepositionofthereceiverantenna,theconnectionbetween

speedcontrollerandtransmitterandthetransmitterbatteries.

Ending the Operation

Firstswitchoffthecontrolunit(bringswitchintothe"OFF"position).Then,disconnectthebatteryfromthe

speedcontroller.Onlynowdoyouturnoffthetransmitter.

Disposal

 Electronicdevicesarerecyclablematerialanddonotbelonginthehouseholdwaste.Disposeof

anunserviceableproductinaccordancewiththerelevantstatutoryregulations.
