Assembly
• Iftheproductistobeusedasareplacementforanexistingcontrolunit/motor,thenrstremovetheold
componentsfromyourmodel.
• Installapiniongearonthedriveshaftofthebrushlessmotorthatissuitableforthepiniongeardriveand
shaftdiameter.Thepiniongearisgenerallyafxedwithagrubscrew.
Attention!
Ensurethatthegrubscrewsitsexactlyontheattenedsideofthe
driveshaftandisscrewedtight inthatposition(seetheschematic
diagramon the right, without thegear wheel) otherwisethe pinion
gearwillquicklyloosen.
Theexactpositionofthepiniongearonthedriveshaftmustbedeterminedafterthemotoris
mounted.Thus,onlytightenthepiniongearlightlyinitially.
• Mountthemotorinyourvehicleandscrewitintoplace.Useonlysuitablescrewsthatdonotprotrudetoo
farintothemotor.Afterinstallation,alwaysensurethattherotorinthemotorcanbeturnedeasilyandthat
nogrindingsoundcanbeheard.Ifthisruleisnotobserved,themotormaybedamaged,inwhichcase
thewarranty/guaranteewillbevoid.
Thedistancebetweenthepiniongearandthepiniongeardrivewillbesetlater,itisnotimportant
atthisstage.
• Nowcheckthatthepiniongearcomesintoexactcontactwiththepiniongeardriveand
isnotskewedtotheside.
Attention!
Theexactpositionofthepiniongeartothepiniongeardriveisveryimportant,
itmustnotbeskewedtothesideasthiswilldamagethepiniongeardrive(the
transferofpowerwillonlyoccuroverasmallarea).
• Adjusttheinstallationpositionofthepiniongearonthedriveshaft,removingthemotor,
ifnecessary.
Onlywhenthepiniongearsitsexactlyparalleltothepiniongeardriveshouldthegrubscrew
inthepiniongearbetightenedrmly.Thefasteningscrewofthemotorpiniongearmustbe
securedagainstlooseningwithadropofthreadlocker.
• Aftercorrectinstallationofthepiniongearonthedriveshaftofthemotor,thecorrectdistancebetweenthe
piniongearandthepiniongeardrivemustbeset.
Generally,whendealingwithmotormounts,onemountholewillberoundandtheotherwillbeoblong.
Themotoristhusattachedwiththescrewintheroundholeandcanbeadjustedwiththeoblonghole.
• Loosenbothscrewsalittle,sothatthemotorcanbeturnedwithasmallamountofforce.
Thedistancebetweenthepiniongearandthepiniongeardrivemustnotbetoosmallortoo
large,asthismaydamagethepiniongeardrive.
Thedistanceissetcorrectlyiftheedgesofthegearwheelinterlockwellandthedrivecanbe
turnedwithoutgreateffort.Afterthersttripswiththevehicle,checkthemountingofthemotor
andthepositionofthemotorpiniongeartothemaingearwheel.
Incorrectsettingsareindicatedbyincreasedwearofthemotorpiniongear/maingearwheel.
• Screwthemotordownwhenitisinthecorrectposition.
• Nowmountthespeedcontrollerinthevehiclechassis.Choosealocationwhichisasfaraspossiblefrom
thereceiver.Thespeedcontrollershouldalsonotbedirectlynexttothemotor.Ensurethatthein-builtred
andgreenLEDsbelowthethreemotorconnectioncablesarestillvisiblewheninstalled.
• Connectthecablesofthespeedcontrollertothemotorcables,noteanyexistingcolourcodingasthiswill
ensurethattheforwards/reversemovementofthemotorinconjunctionwiththespeedcontrolleriscorrect.
Ifthedirectionofrotationofthemotorislaterincorrect(dependingonthevehicle'stransmis-
sion),simplyswaptwoofthethreeconnections.Themotorthenrotatesintheotherdirection.
• Velcrooradouble-sidedadhesivetapemaybeusedtoattachthespeedcontroller.
• Checkthefanfasteningscrewsforrmseating(checkthisregularlyafteroperatingthevehicle).
Important!
Thespeedcontrollerincludedinthekitisdesignedforoperationwitha3-4-cellLiPorecharge-
ablebattery(ratedvoltage11.1-14.8V)oran8-12-cellNiMHrechargeablebattery(rated
voltage9.6-14.4V).
Connectingabatterywithmorecellstothespeedcontrollerwilldamagethespeedcontroller
and/ormotor.Thiswillvoidthewarranty/guarantee.
Ifconnectingamotortothespeedcontrollerthatissuitableformorecells,alwaysobservethe
thresholdvaluesofthespeedcontroller,seechapter"TechnicalData”.
• Theon/offbuttonwithprogrammingbuttonmustbeattachedsothatitcanbeeasilyoperated.Thisalso
requiresattachmentwithvelcroordouble-sidedtapeorsimilar.
• Positionallcablessothattheycannotbecomeentangledinrotatingormovingpartsofthevehicle.Use
cabletiestoafxthem,forexample.

Theproductconsistsofanelectronicspeedcontrollerandabrushlessmotor.Themotorandspeedcontroller
arewater-protectedandareusedforinstallationintouringcars,buggies,trucksandmonstertrucks.The
speedcontrollerisdesignedfortheconnectionoftworechargeablebatteries(connectionofasinglebattery
isonlypossiblewithajumperplug,notincluded).
ThespeedcontrollerisprogrammedwiththeprogrammingbuttonandtwoLEDs.
Forsafetyandapprovalpurposes,youmustnotrebuildand/ormodifythisproduct.Usingtheproductfor
purposesotherthanthosedescribedabovemaydamagetheproduct.Inaddition,improperusecancause

Ifthespeedcontrollerisnotusedforshortperiods,itcanbedeactivatedwiththeon/offswitch.
• Alwaysswitchthetransmitteronrstbeforeconnectingthespeedcontrollertothebattery
andswitchingiton.
Before switching the transmitter off, switch the speed controller off and, if necessary,
disconnectitfromthebattery.
• The speed controller can be used in conjunction with the motor supplied for NiMH/NiCd
rechargeablebatteriesaswellasLiPorechargeablebatteries.Thepermittednumberofcells,
etc.canbefoundinthetableinchapter"Technicaldata".
• Operatethespeedcontrolleronlywitharechargeablebatterypackandneverwithapower
adaptor.
• Depending on the intendeduse (on- or off-road) and road surface (tarmac, sand, grass)
used,theremaybedifferentcurrentvaluesinoperation.Pleasenotethetechnicaldatain

• Onlyconnectonesinglebrushlessmotortothespeedcontroller.
• Thebrushlessspeedcontrollerisnotsuitablefortheoperationofconventionalelectricmotors
withtwoconnections.
• Maintainthelargestpossibledistance betweenthereceiverand speedcontroller/motorto
avoidinterference.
• Donotinstalltheantennacableofthereceiverparalleltolivecables.
• Donotbundletheantennacableofyourreceiversystem,insteaduseanantennatube,for
example,whichprotrudesverticallyfromthevehicle.
• Alwaysswitchthetransmitteronrstandmoveitsoperatingleverformotorcontrolintothe
neutralposition(motoroff).Onlythencanyouconnectthespeedcontrollertoabatterypack
andswitchiton.Whenswitchingoff,proceedinreverseorder;rstswitchthespeedcontroller
offanddisconnectitfromthebattery,thenswitchthetransmitteroff.
• Duringoperationofthemodel,sufcientcoolingmustbeprovidedforthespeedcontrollerand
themotor.Nevercovertheheatsinkorthefanonthespeedcontroller.
• Alwayscheckthefunctionalityofthefanbeforeoperation,donotblockthefan;removedust
ordirtfromthefanthathasaccumulatedduringoperationofthevehicle.
Connection of one or two drive batteries
Dependingonthemanufacturerandtype,modelvehiclesin1:8scalehaveoneortwobatteryholders(e.g.
twobatteryholdersareusedsothatanoptimumcentreofgravitycanbeachieved).
Thespeedcontroller,therefore,hastwoT-connectorsforconnectionoftwoidenticaldrivebatteries(e.g.two
2-cellLiPodrivebatteries).
Ifusingasingledrivebattery(e.g.3-cellLiPodrivebattery),ajumperplug(notincluded)mustbeusedon
oneofthetwoT-connectorsonthespeedcontroller.ThesecondT-connectoronthespeedcontrolleristhen
usedforconnectiontothedrivebattery.
WerecommendthatthejumperplugbeusedontheT-connectorwiththetworedcables.The
otherT-connectoronthespeedcontrollerthenhasthecorrectcolourmarkingforpositive/+(red)
andnegative/-(black).
Making a jumper plug
Produceajumperplugasshownintheguretotheright.
Ensurethatthesolderedjoints(e.g.withheatshrinktubing)arewellinsulated.Thematerial
requiredforthisisnotincludedandmustbepurchasedseparately.
Fixthecableofthespeedcontrollerinthevehicleinsuchawaythatitcannotgetintorotat-
ingparts(drive)(e.g.useacabletie).
Programming
a) Programming the full throttle and neutral position
Toprogramthefullthrottlepositionforforwards/reverseandtheneutralposition,proceedasfollows:
• Switchthetransmitteronandleavethethrottle/brakeleverintheneutralposition.Setthetrimmingfor
thetravelfunctioninthecentreposition.Forcomputertransmitters,notravellimitorABSmaybepro-
grammed.Ifprogrammingfailstofunctionasdesired,thecontroldirectionforthethrottlelevermustbe
settoreverse.
• Switchthespeedcontrolleroffandconnectoneortwodrivebatteries.
Ifusingasingledrivebattery,ajumperplug(notincluded,seeabove)mustbeusedononeof
thetwoT-connectorsonthespeedcontroller.
WerecommendthatthejumperplugbeusedontheT-connectorwiththetworedcables.The
otherT-connectorthenhasthecorrectcolourmarkingforpositive/+(red)andnegative/-(black).
• Holddownthesetupbuttonandswitchthespeed controlleron.Re-
leasethesetupbuttonassoonastheLED(seegureright)onthe
speedcontrollerashesredandthemotoremitsanaudiblesignal.
The audible signal is generated by brief activation of the
brushlessmotor.Dependingonthemotor,thissoundmaybe
veryquietorinaudible.Inthiscase,observetheLEDsonthe
speedcontroller.
• Now,press theprogrammingbuttononcewhilethethrottle/brake le-
verisintheneutralposition.TheLEDonthespeedcontrollerbriey
ashesgreen.Themotoremitsanaudiblesignal.
• Movethethrottle/brakelevertothefullforwardsthrottleposition(moveittowardsthehandle)andholditin
place.Now,presstheprogrammingbuttononce.TheLEDashesgreentwice.Themotoremitsanaudible
signal.Thefullforwardsthrottlepositionissaved.
• Movethethrottle/brakelevertothefullreversethrottleposition(moveitfullyawayfromthehandle)and
holditinplace.Now,presstheprogrammingbuttononce.TheLEDashesgreenthreetimes.Themotor
emitsanaudiblesignal.Thefullreversethrottlepositionissaved.
• Releasethegas/brakeleversothatitisintheneutralposition.TheLEDashesgreenthreetimes.The
motoremitsanaudiblesignal.Theneutralpositionprogramminghasbeensaved.Themotorandspeed
controllerarereadyforoperationafterapprox.threeseconds.Whenyounowswitchthespeedcontroller
onagain,thespeedcontrollerisreadyforoperationwiththesettingsimplementedabove.
b) Programming additional features
Allpossiblespeedcontrollersettingscanbeprogrammedwitheasewithanoptionalprogram-
mingcard.Theprogrammingcardisconnectedtothefanconnection(removetheconnection
plugfromthefanbeforehand).Tothisend,seethenotesatwww.conrad.comfortheproduct.
• Connectthespeedcontrollertothedrivebattery,presstheprogrammingbutton(pressandhold)and
switchthespeedcontrolleron.TheredLEDashes.
PressandholdtheprogrammingbuttonuntilthegreenLEDashes.
Youarenowatprogramminglevelandcanprogramthefollowingmenuitems.

c) Available programming options
Menu item 1 = driving mode
Here,youcandeterminethedrivingmode(drivingmode1=forwardswithbrakeonly;2=forwardsand
reversewithbrake;3=forwardsandreverse).
Whenswitchingfromforwardstobrakeindrivingmode1,thereisnoswitchovertoreverse,thevehicle
isbrakedonly.Indrivingmode2,thereisnoimmediateswitchovertoreverse,insteadthereisaninterim
pause(1xneutralpositiononthetransmitter).Bothdrivemodesarepreferredas,unlikedrivingmode3,they
protectthegearunit,wheelsandbatterycapacity.
Menu item 2 = motor brake
Whenthethrottleleveronthetransmitterismovedtotheneutralpositionfromtheforwardsposition,the
motorbrakeisactivated.
Thefunctioncorrespondstotheenginebrakeina"real"car,whenyoutakeyourfootofftheacceleratorpedal
butdonotdepressthebrakepedal.
Themotorbrakecanbeprogrammedovereightlevels.Thehigherthesetvalue,thestrongerthebrake
effect.Thefollowingvaluescanbeset:
1=0%;2=5%;3=10%;4=20%;5=40%;6=60%;7=80%,8=100%
Menu item 3 = low voltage detection
LowvoltagedetectionisforoperationofmodelswithLiPoandNiMHrechargeablebatteries.Activationofthis
functionisrecommendedespeciallyforLiPobatteriestoavoidharmfuldeepdischarge.
WithaLiPobattery,thesettingvaluesrefertoavoltagevalueperbatterycell.
Example:withasettingof3.0V,a2-cellbatteryatabatteryvoltageof6.0V(2cellsx3.0V=6.0V)would
reachthesetlowvoltagethreshold.Thespeedcontrollerwouldthenswitchthemotoroffinordertoprevent
deepdischargeofthebattery.
IfaNiMHbatteryisused,thecalculationofthenumberof(LiPo)cellsisbasedonthebatteryvoltagethat
thespeedcontrollermeasuresatswitch-on.Ifavoltageof9.0to12.0Visdetectedafterswitchingthespeed
controlleron,theswitch-offisthesameasfora3-cellLiPobattery.Ifavoltageoflessthan9.0Visdetected,
thespeedcontrolleractivatestheswitch-offasfora2-cellLiPobattery.
Example:ifyouhaveconnectedafullycharged8-cellNiMHbatterywithapprox.11.2Vbatteryvoltageandif
thecut-offvoltageper(LiPo)cellissetto2.6V,thelowvoltagedetectionswitchesthemotoroffatabattery
voltageof7.8V(3x2.6V=7.8V).
Thefollowingsettingsarepossible:
1=nolowvoltageprotection;2=2.6V/cell;3=2.8V/cell;4=3.0V/cell;5=3.2V/cell,6=3.4V/cell
ForLiPobatteries,werecommendasettingof3.2V/cell.
Thebatteryvoltageischeckedcontinuously.If a low voltage is detectedfor morethan two
seconds,themotorisswitchedoff.TheredLEDonthespeedcontrollerthenashestoindicate
switch-offduetolowvoltage.Inthatcase,discontinueoperationandchargethebatteryfully.
Menu item 4 = start-up dynamics
Withthissetting,youcanadjustthestart-updynamicsoverninelevels(1-9):1=gentle;5=medium;9=
veryhigh.
Thehigherthesetvalue,themoreaggressivelythemotorreactstothecontrolcommandsonthetransmit-
ter.Itisimportantthatthebatterycandeliverthecurrentrequiredforthispurpose(LiPobatterywithhighC
rate).Ifthemotor"stutters"atthehigheststart-updynamicslevelandthebatteryisnotempty(orispowerful
enough),thetransmissionratiomayneedtobeadjusted.
Menu item 5 = brake effect
Here,youcansetthebrakeeffectthatisappliedwhenyoumovethecontrolleveronthetransmitterfrom
forwardstoreverse(orbrake)toitsendpoint.
Thefollowingvaluescanbeset:1=25%,2=50%,3=75%;4=100%;5=brakeoff.
Thehigherthesetvalue,thehigherthebrakingeffect.Thehigherthebrakingeffect,thehigher
theloadonthegearunitandtyres.
d) Restoring default settings
Withthespeedcontrollerswitchedon,pressandholdtheprogrammingbuttonforapprox.threeseconds
untiltheredandgreenLEDashsimultaneously.TheredLEDthenashesonitsowntoindicatesthatthe
defaultsettingshavebeenrestored.
Withthisresettodefaultsettings,allprevioussettings,includingprogrammingoftheneutralposition,are
reset.
Thespeedcontrollermustthenbefullyreprogrammedbystartingwithprogrammingoftheneutralposition.
Todothis,switchthespeedcontrolleroffandstartthereprogramming(see"Programmingoffullthrottle
andneutralposition").
Connection to the receiver
Connectthe three-pole plug of the speed controller to the corresponding channel of the receiver.Make
absolutelysureyouhavethecorrectreceiverconguration(seeoperatinginstructionsforreceiveraswell
astheinscriptiononthereceiver).
Yellow/white/orangecable:Controlsignal
Redcable:Operatingvoltage
Brown/blackcable:GND/negative
ThespeedcontrollerhasaBEC.Thissuppliesthereceiverdirectlyfromthedrivebatteryvia
thespeedcontroller.IftheBECisusedasapowersupplyforthereceiver,noreceiverbattery,
rechargeableordisposable,maybeused.
Important!
If,insteadofthespeedcontroller'sBEC,aseparatereceiverpowersupplyisusedforthereceiv-
er,themiddleredwireonthespeedcontroller'sthree-pinreceiverplugmustbedisconnected.
Failuretocomplywiththisinstructionwillpermanentlydamagethespeedcontroller!Thiswill
voidthewarranty/guarantee.

• Ifthespeedcontrollerrecognisesanabnormalvoltagevalue,thespeedcontrolleremitsacorresponding
warningsignal(2tones,1secondpause,2tones,1secondpause,etc.).
Inthiscase,checkthebattery(voltage,chargestatus)andtheconnectionsbetweenthebatteryandthe
speedcontroller.
Ifthespeedcontrollerrecognisesafaultycontrolsignalfromthereceiverafterbeingswitchedon,thered
LEDonthespeedcontrollerashesquickly.
• Checkthetrimmingforthethrottleleverorreleasethethrottleleverintothecentreposition(neutralposi-
tion)whenthespeedcontrollerisswitchedon.
• TheredLEDlightsupinforwardsandreverseorwiththecorrespondingcontrolsignalfromthetransmitter.
Whendrivingforwardsat100%fullthrottle,thegreenLEDalsolightsup.
Ifabrakingeffectof100%issetundermenuitem5,thegreenLEDlightsupbrieywhenusingthebrake
orwhenreversing.
• Whenchangingbetweenforwardsandreverse(intravelmode2),thethrottlelevermustbeplacedbriey
intotheneutralposition(approx.2seconds).Ifthethrottleleverisshifteddirectlyfromforwardstoreverse,
thespeedcontroller'sbrakeisactivated(thevehiclewillNOTgobackwards!)
• Ifthedrivefunctionorbrakefunctionrespondoppositetothemovementofthethrottleleveronthetrans-
mitter,activatethereversefunctiononthetransmitterorswapanytwoofthethreemotorcables.
• Thefunctionalityofthefanmustbecheckedbeforeandaftereachtrip.Thisisespeciallytrueifthevehicle
