PRELIMINARY STEPS: Checking and correcting the voltage setting
The voltage set in the balance must agree with the power-line voltage.
Before putting the balance into operation for the first time, the voltage setting should be cheked and, if needed, corected.
The voltage set at the factory is listed on a label on the power connection socket (5).
If this voltage setting corresponds to your local power-line voltage, go on the next page.
If this voltage setting
does not correspond to your local power-line voltage, or if the label is missing, the balance housing must be opened, the voltage set on the
voltage selector must be cheked, and if necessary, changed.

Before doing so, make sure that the power-line
cable is disconnected!
When the power-line cable is connected, the balance
electronics are powered, even though the display
does not light up!
If the weighing pan (6) and pan support (7)
are installed, remove them.
Remove screw (8).
Carefully remove housing cover (10) with in-
use cover, if installed.

PRELIMINARY STEPS: Installing the draft shield and setting up the balance
Installing the pan support and weighing pan is always done in the same manner, regardless of whether a draft shield and/or in-use cover is used or not. With the
PE360, the draft shield provided should be installed, so as to achieve measurement values that are not affected by drafts.
Every PE balance provides reliable measuring values, even under less than favorable ambient conditions.
However, it is preferable to set the balance up at a stable location, with as little draft as possible and that is not in direct sunlight.
Installing the draft shield (PE360)
The base (19) is installed in the factory. If it was
subsequently removed, proceed as follows:
Remove weighing pan and pan support.
Place base (19) on the balance and turn it
clockwise until it stops.
Place pan support and weighing pan on
balance.
Balance location
Stable base, that is vibration-free and
horizontal.
No large temperature fluctuations.
–Avoid direct sunlight.
Find a location free of drafts.
At the selected location, connect power cable
(14).

required, place low or high middle section
(20) on the base.
Place cover (21) with the two snaps on the
middle section.

OPERATION: How to switch the balance on or off
The accuracy of an electronic measuring instrument is more constant if the operating temperature remains the same.
For this reason, these PE balances are built so that when the instrument is switched off using the single control bar (1), only the display is switched off. The balance
electronic components remain switched on as long as the power cable is connected (stand-by operation).
It is also important that the balance display always be switched on (by pressing the control bar) with
the pan empty.
Switching the balance on
Whit the pan empty, briefly press the single
control bar (1); all display segments light up
for several seconds:
This allows you to make a check of the display.
Then the display indicates zero, with as many
decimal places as the balance model readability
permits, e.g.:

OPERATION: How to calibrate the balance
Your balance must be calibrated every time it is moved to a new location, i.e., the correct weight display must be adjusted.
Only then will your weighings be accurate. The balance must be
left connected to the power source for 30 minutes before calibrating it (warm-up time). The plastic
draft shield should be on the PE360.
Depending on the balance model, certain test weights are needed for calibration. These weights are listet under “ACCESSORIES, optional” for each balance model. The
test weights should always be handled carefully and, as much as possible, should not be touched with your bare hands. If your balance equipped with a leveling kit,
it should be leveled before it is calibrated.

OPERATION: Selecting the weight unit
The PE360/3600 balances can display weights in grams and even in several nonmetric units. Thus, they can work for instance as ounce balances. The selected
weight unit remains stored even in the case of a power interruption but it can be changed at any time.
Note: In certified balances, the weight unit must be selected
before certification is carried out.
Selecting the weight unit
Disconnect power-line cable (14).
Press the control bar (1) and hold it down.
With the bar pressed, connect power-line cable
(14).
The display indicates now “Unit”. On the right
of the display, the weight units light up in
succession.
When the disired weight unit lights up, release
the control bar (1).
The display indicates all the numerals and
characters (in the same way as when being
switched on) and then follows the zero display.
The number of decimal places depends on the
balance model and the weight unit.
If during the changing of the weight units a
given unit does not appear on the display, that
particular unit can not be selected, e.g. the
kilogram on the PE360.

OPERATION: How weight is determined or tared out
The PE360 DeltaRange and the PE3600 DeltaRange allow you to weigh very easily in two different ranges: either the coarse range, or the fine range whose readability
is 10 times greater and which can be shifted to any place within the entire balance weighing range. This fine range extends from the zero display in both plus and
minus direction. Besides, the PE balance measures one decimal place more than it displays, thus increasing the display accuracy of PE balances even more.
Taring means setting the display to zero again while a given weight (e.g. a container) is on the weighing pan. In this way, it is possible to always weigh in starting
with the zero display. Only the weight of the weighed-in object appears in the display. Of course, combined container weight and object to be weighed may not exceed
the balance weighing range.

OPERATION: How to weigh in
Weighing-in means filling loose or liquid objects into a container on the balance until a desired weight (the target weight) has been reached.
PE balances are equipped with DeltaDisplay which makes it easier to weigh in because, when fast weight changes occur, the last number of the display is temporarily
blanked out.
Weighing-in
Place the container on the weighing pan.
–Tare by pressing control bar (1): the balance
displays zero.
Fill in objects to be weighed up to the desired
target weight.
Note: While weight is changing in the display, the

OPERATION: How to make subtractive weighings; how to read devations from a reference weight
A container filled with a substance can be tared out. This makes is possible to weigh out from the container without having to calculate how much substance has been
removed.
Deviations from a reference weight can be read with the correct sign in front, provided the reference weight has been tared out beforehand. In any case, the balance
display has to be switched on before a load (e.g., the reference weight) is placed on the pan.
The deviation is displayed with the fine range readability so far as the reference weight does not exceed the fine range.
Weighing out
Place container with the substance on the
weighing pan.

Remove some of the substance; the weight of

FURTHER CAPABILITIES OF PE BALANCES: Level indicator Field Installation Kit, glass draft shield, GD hanger
There is a Level indicator Field Installation Kit available for PE balances that are frequently moved from location to location.
This allows the balance to be leveled at every new location. Thus, the accuracy of the balance remains constant.
A glass draft shield is available as an option for the PE360.
A GD hanger is built in as standard equipment in the PE balances; this is used for weighing below the balance.

The Field Installation Kit contains two foot screws
(28) and one level indicator (27). Installation can
be carried out either by the user himself, or by
METTLER TOLEDO Service.

With the PE360, it is possible to replace the plastic
draft shield that comes with the balance with the
METTLER TOLEDO glass draft shield. Use of this shield
prevents the weighing result from being affected when
using tall weighing containers.
GD hanger
For weighings below the balance, there is a GD
hanger built into the balance. Here, the object to be
weighed is hooked onto the weighing cell; this
requires an opening in the weighing table.

MAINTENANCE: Installing the in-use cover and changing the fuse
To protect the balance against dirt, damage and caustic chemical substances, the balance is shipped with an installed in-use cover. The in-use cover is made of hard
plastic and cannot be folded. Operation of the balance is in no way hindered by the in-use cover.
In case the microfuse needs to be replaced, there is a spare fuse in the fuse holder. If the microfuse needs to be replaced repeatedly for no obvious reason, contact
METTLER TOLEDO Service.
Removing the in-use cover
Remove weighing pan and pan support.
–Turn retaining ring (25) (in the PE360, the
draft shield base (19)) counterclockwise until
it snaps free and can be lifted out.
Remove in-use cover (26).
Place pan support and weighing pan back on
balance.
(The retaining ring is installed in the PE3600 only if
an in-use cover is used).
Installing the in-use cover
Remove weighing pan and pan support.
First hook up in-use cover on the rear of
balance housing and then pull it tight at the
balance front.
Place retaining ring (25) (in the PE360, the
draft shield base) then turn clockwise to stop
position.
Place pan support and weighing pan back on
balance.
Replacing the microfuse
Disconnect the power cable.
Remove the fuse holder (4) with a screwdriver.
Remove defective fuse and install a new fuse
(Spare fuse is in the fuse holder).

Reinsert fuse holder.
Plug power cable back in.

MAINTENANCE: Cleaning and calibration
Your balance requires only very little maintenance: it should be cleaned regularly and calibrated periodically.
Before checking calibration, the balance should be left connected to the power source for 30 minutes (warm-up time).
If your balance is equipped with a leveling kit, it should be leveled before it is calibrated.
Cleaning
Please note: The balance must not be placed on its
top, because that would damage the measuring cell.
As needed, the weighing pan, in-use cover, the draft
shield (PE360), and if necessary, the housing should
be cleaned.
If possible, do not use any strong solvents, so as
not to damage the paint of the balance housing.
Calibration
To have your balance always provide accurate
weighing results, it must be correctly calibrated.
Check calibration regularly, e.g. with continuous
operation, once a month.
The test weight used with your balance model is listed
under “ACCESSORIES, optional”.
If you own both PE360 and PE3600 balances,
please make sure not to interchange the pan supports
and weighing pans of the various balances after
cleaning.
The pan support of the PE360 (soft springs) must
not be used on a PE3600 (hard springs) or the other
