1. Important information on installing the CD changer in the E39
Only for use in the BMW dealer organisation.
The CD changer may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required special
tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).
All the work is shown for the left-hand side of the car and must be repeated on the right-
hand side.
In cars with an on-board monitor radio the control cable is only installed in the boot.
In cars with a BMW Professional hi-fi system DSP amplifier only the coaxial cable for the
Professional hi-fi system DSP amplifier/CD change must be installed in the boot.
In cars with a small boot cover the boot cover for the CD changer may have to be ordered
separately from the electronic parts catalogue (EPC), depending on the equipment in the
car.
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/leads that you install must be secured with cable ties.If the specified PIN
chambers are occupied, bridges, double crimps or twin-lead terminals must be used.

Remove the left tail light unit.
Mark the drilling position (40) with a centre punch.
Dimension A = 19 mm
Dimension B = 17 mm
Remove the body paint and primer from the grey
area (41) in a diameter of 20 mm around the
position of the hole (40) on the front and rear of the
tail light unit (42).
The panel must be bare in the grey area (41), to
ensure that perfect contact is possible.
Risk of damage. Before drilling the hole
ensure that the cable and plug fastenings are
unclipped and the cables are removed from
the drilling area to prevent their being
damaged.
Drill the holes with a 6 mm drill bit.
Remove all the drill chips that are produced during
the drilling process using an extractor.
Then deburr the edges of the hole.
0
Push the hexagonal screw and washer (19) from
the rear into the hole (40) and secure it with a
hexagonal nut and washer M6 (13).
If you fit the earth connection cable later, ensure
that you fit the washer (14) first and then branch
A3.
Then secure branch A3 (the terminal lug with the
cable output must point downwards) using the
second hexagonal nut and washer M6 (13).
After securing the parts, treat all of them with
the anti-corrosion measures set out in the
BMW standard.
