The raw speed of the BMW R 1200 S is quite simply
breathtaking, though its handling is no less impressive.
The bike’s outstandingly responsive chassis features the
BMW Motorrad Paralever and Telelever, and offers optimum
ground contact at all times. And for those that like their
sports a little more extreme, Öhlins Racing components
are available as optional extras.

The BMW R 1200 S is just as impressive decelerating as it is acceler-
ating. With its large discs and four calipers, the braking system gives
riders precise control over massive stopping power. The new optional
2-channel ABS can be deactivated for riding on the track.

1 Take an inside line
through the apex
of the bend, and
don’t be afraid to
run over the curb
on the left-hand
side as you exit the
bend to get onto
the racing line
(though not
in wet weather!)
2 Aim for an apex slightly deeper into the
bend, so you can accelerate as much
as possible on the short straight that
follows.
3 Aim to touch the curb in the ² rst third
of the bend, so you can get the bike
upright and be on the gas as early as
possible coming out of the corner.
4 This left-hander can be taken at very high
speed – if you’ve got the nerve to go for it.
5 Stay right up tight against the inner curb
so you’re in perfect position for the right-
hander that follows.
6 Aim to be right up against the
curve at the apex of the bend
so you can again get maximum
acceleration on the short following
straight.
7 Exactly the same as turn 3.
8 Similar to turn 5. Holding the
racing line means running over
the curb on the left-hand side of
the track.
9 Two quick changes of
direction are required
here. Aim for the inside
curb of the following
corner through the
right-hander, and try not
to run too wide on exiting
the chicane, so as to be
in good shape for the
² nal turn.
10 Turn in early and get the bike upright as soon as you
can to carry as much speed as possible onto the
start/² nish straight.

As a former German motocross and supersport champion, and a two-time winner of the world’s
toughest street race, the Grand Prix of Macao, Markus Barth knows a thing or two about high-
performance sportsbikes. So who better to put the BMW R 1200 S through its paces on the
Circuito Albacete in Spain? These tips from the master are sure to get your lap times tumbling.
R1200S_206_GBE.indd 14 08.09.2006 13:47:50 Uhr
differential is compact and light, while the concave rear axles
also features an innovative lightweight construction, and works
together with the weight-optimized swinging arm to reduce
unsprung mass. The chassis is faster to react to jolts, thanks
to the use of a WAD (travel-related damping) strut to handle
suspension and damping – the greater the compression, the
greater the damping effect.
That little bit extra at the vital moment: the sport suspension.
The optional, fully adjustable Öhlins Racing components turn
your R 1200 S into a genuine track bike, further improving
responsiveness and performance. The height of the rear
section of the chassis can be adjusted without affecting the
spring set-up. The sport suspension also features the same
travel-related damping technology as the standard version.
tilt angle.
The BMW R 1200 S utilizes a three-
section frame, with the engine as a load-
bearing component. The spaceframe
middle and front sections are screwed
onto the rear section, which features an
aluminium square pipe construction to
minimize weight.

On a winning streak: the BMW Motorrad Telelever. The
new BMW R 1200 S is ² tted with an especially lightweight ver-
sion of the patented BMW Motorrad Telelever, which combines
the bene² ts of swinging and telescopic fork designs, and also
features a central suspension strut. On the road, the Telelever’s
responsiveness ensures a high degree of longitudinal rigid-
ity and excellent riding and steering stability even at very high
speeds. It also minimizes brake dive. The Telelever’s geometry
has been specially recon² gured for the R 1200 S to meet the
unique demands of sports riding, so that tilt angles of up to 52°
can now be achieved. Time to get out there and see what your
knee protectors are made of.
Don’t settle for second best: the BMW Motorrad Para-
lever. The BMW Motorrad Paralever combines the functions
of rear-wheel suspension and drive train. The Paralever brace,
which serves to minimize load change reactions, is situated over
the swinging arm for better ground clearance. The rear wheel

First place is spoken for – by the new 2-cylinder engine.
BMW Motorrad’s existing 1,170-cc 2-cylinder boxer engine has
undergone numerous modi² cations to make it suitable for use
in the R 1200 S. The result is the sportiest 2-cylinder engine
that BMW Motorrad has ever built. It’s not just the 122 bhp
(90 kW) of power that will impress, but the engine’s responsive-
ness, right across a rev range that extends up to 8,800 rpm. And
to ensure the overtaking power is there when you need it most,
it delivers a maximum torque of 112 Nm at 6,800 rpm. The use
of the latest lightweight construction techniques throughout
means that the overall weight has been signi² cantly reduced,
despite the incorporation of an equalizing shaft to eliminate
vibrations. The BMS-K engine electronics, which replace a
separate choke, improve performance and cut fuel consumption,
thanks to the data provided by an extensive array of sen sors.
Knock sensors and an enhanced twin-spark ignition facilitate
cleaner combustion, resulting in smoother low-rev engine
running at constant speeds.
Built to perform. BMW Motorrad engineers don’t do things by
halves. And when it comes to delivering on the sporting promise
of the “S” in the R 1200 S name, they’ve really surpassed
themselves. The modi² cations made to the 2-cylinder engine
are all designed to maximize power delivery and responsiveness.
The addition of a third camshaft bearing reduces the engines’
vulnerability to vibratory fatigue, while the sodium-cooled intake
valves are hollow and therefore lighter. Valve gear and piston
conrods have been strengthened, and the intake air duct has
been enlarged. Precise valve timing ensures the most effective
possible use is made of the available cylinder capacity, while
raised pistons crowns help increase the compression ratio to
12.5:1. Sensitivity of response at part-load is ensured by the
special progressive kinematics, which control the gener ously-
sized throttle valves.
Everything about is says sport. The various technical fea-
tures of the BMW R 1200 S’s gearbox combine to offer riders
numerous advantages. The helical gears engage particularly
softly, reducing running noise, and gear changes are initiated
using a special sliding sleeve; combined with the optimized
selection mechanism, this means riders gear changes can be
made with minimum effort and maximum precision – perfect for
sports riding.
Fair play – brake and wait for the others to catch up.
The BMW R 1200 S is equipped with the powerful and re-
sponsive BMW Motorrad brake system. The two ³ oating
320-millimetre brake discs on the front wheel are actuated by
4-piston calipers. Steel ³ ex brake lines ensure the biting point
remains consistent even under extended braking. A special
lightweight version of BMW Motorrad ABS is also available as
an optional extra, adding just 1.5 kilograms to the motorcycle’s
total weight. This features enhanced diagnostics, and can be
deactivated for track riding.
Peak performance. The shaft drive. The R 1200 S uses
BMW Motorrad’s tried-and-tested shaft drive design to connect
the rear wheel to the clutch. Incorporated into the Paralever
system, its low weight contributes to the R 1200 S’s sporty
responsiveness and performance. It is extremely durable and
requires very little maintenance.

All BMW Motorrad motorcycles are designed around the rider.
And every rider knows that the wider the seat, especially towards
the front, the harder it is to reach the ³ oor with your feet – whatever
the seat height. The seat of the R 1200 S has been optimized for
step length; it is markedly slimmer towards the front, giving more
free-dom of movement for sports-style riding and making it easier
to touch the ground when stationary. However, the rear of the seat
is broader, for increased comfort.
The height of the standard seat is 830 millimetres, which
means the step length – the distance from heel to heel – is
1,810 milli metres.
The ergonomic triangle formed by the footrests, seat and
handlebars is designed to give comfortable and relaxing
sports-style riding even over long distances. The screw-² tted
pillion passenger footrests can be detached for racing use.
In great shape.
R1200S_206_GBE.indd 20 08.09.2006 13:47:54 Uhr
And of course the BMW R 1200 S looks every inch the thorough-
bred sportsbike that it is, with its slim, purposeful lines, and the
striking under-seat pipes at the rear. The rear cladding is noticeably
thinner and more aggressively styled than on previous models, and
the 18-diode LED rear light it houses is not just better-looking, but
also longer-lasting and more energy ef² cient than conventional
designs, typically using only 10 to 20 per cent as much electricity.
The front end is unmistakably BMW, with its kidney grille, and
asymmetric headlight unit.
Everything you need to know. Now. With the stripped-down
minimalism you’d expect of a sportsbike, the instrument cluster
is a masterpiece of clarity. The tachometer and rev counter show
you at a glance exactly how much of the new R 1200 S’s po tential
you are currently exploiting, while the electronic display provides a
wealth of more detailed information, including mile age, oil tem-
perature, fuel level, range and a clock function. The gear display
shows which gear is currently selected. For optimum visibility, the
instrument lighting automatically adjusts to the level of ambient
light.
