Battery Cautions Cont’d.
• Do not short battery terminals.
• Do not charge batteries.
• Remove dead battery immediately and dispose of per local codes.
• Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
• Keep batteries out of reach of children.
• Remove battery if the device will not be used for several months.
Transporting batteries can possibly cause fires if the battery terminals inadvertently come in
contact with conductive materials such as keys, coins, hand tools and the like. The US
Department of Transportation Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR) actually prohibit
transporting batteries in commerce or on airplanes (i.e. packed in suitcases and carryon
luggage) UNLESS they are properly protected from short circuits. So when transporting
individual batteries, make sure that the battery terminals are protected and well insulated from
materials that could contact them and cause a short circuit.
Weak Battery Indicator
The upper left portion of the LCD screen will display a low battery symbol (Figure 1) when a
weak battery is detected. As the battery continues to weaken, the low battery indicator and the
detection mode will no longer display on the screen.
Operating Instructions
Measuring Length
1.) Move slide switch (E) to DISTANCE MEASUREMENT position (far right)
2.) Slide the on/off switch to the “ON” position, press “READ” button taking one
measurement to activate the unit.
3.) Press the “FT/M” button to select feet / inch units or metric measurement units as shown
in Figure 2.
4.) Press the “SET” button (for obtaining true wall to wall distance) to select measurement
from the front edge of the unit, back edge of the unit or at 90° to the unit see Figure 3.
5.) Point the unit perpendicular to the target and and press the “READ” button located on
either side of the unit. Use the laser pointer to insure that the unit is pointed at the object
that you want to measure for distance.
6.) When the distance is out of the detection range (2 feet to 50 feet / 61cm to 15 meters)
the unit will beep and display “E” for error.
7.) When the distance is within the detection range, the unit will beep and display the
distance for 15 seconds.
8.) Slide the on/off switch to the “OFF” position to turn the unit off.
9.) For “Continuous Measurement” operation, press and hold the “READ” button and walk
toward or away from the point being measured.
Adding, Subtracting and Multiplying Measurements
Adding
1.) After taking first measurement (or recalling measurement from memory by pressing the
“RCL” button), press the “+” button as shown in Figure 4 to add distances. Take the sec-
ond measurement then press the “=” button to get the total.
Subtracting
2.) After taking first measurement (or recalling measurement from memory by pressing the
“RCL” button), press the “-” button as shown in Figure 5 to subtract distances. Take the
second measurement then press the “=” button to get the total.
Multiplying

“RCL” button), press the “x” button as shown in Figure 6 to multiply distances or obtain
the Area (Square Footage). Take the second measurement then press the “=” button to
get the total area or press “x” again and “=” to take a third measurement and calculate
Volume (Cubic Feet).
Notes:
When using unit at a 90° angle be sure to fully lock the measurer into the 90° position as
shown in Figure 7. Not having the measurer at a full 90° will result in an inaccurate reading.
For accuracy purposes, avoid moving after pressing the read button until the distance is
displayed.
The measured object must have a flat hard surface and be in an open space void of any
obstacles in the measurement path in order to obtain accurate results.
Distance detection may be sometimes affected by the environment. To insure a correct
reading repeat the detection until you get at least two of the same readings within three attempts.
The LCD screen will go blank after 15 seconds of inactivity.
The measurer cannot measure distance through glass.
The laser is used to locate where the tool is pointed and is only “ON” when a measurement is
being taken.
Laser
DANGER: Laser Radiation, avoid direct eye exposure.
Scanning
Stud Mode
For stud sensing through up to 3/4 inches (19mm) thick drywall.
1.) Move slide switch (E) to STUD position (far left). Slide the on/off switch (F) to the “ON”
position. Hold unit straight up and down and place flat against wall as shown in Figure 8.
Press in on either of the read buttons (D) and continue holding in button.
2.) The unit will beep once while it is calibrating and will display the stud symbol on the
LCD screen.
3.) Slide unit slowly, Figure 9, across surface of wall without lifting or tilting. When a stud is
detected the LCD screen will begin to display a row of black boxes , slow down
and keep sliding until the beep sounds as shown in Figure 10. Mark this spot at the
middle of the unit.
4.) Continue holding button in and scan beyond the marked spot until the row of black boxes
disappears. Without releasing button, reverse direction to locate the other edge of the
stud. When the unit beeps again mark the spot. Center of stud is between two marks.
Metal Mode
For metal sensing through up to 2 inches (50mm) thick drywall.
1.) Move slide switch (E) to METAL position (middle left). Hold unit in air away from metal
objects. Slide the on/off switch (F) to the “ON” position. Scan both horizontally and
vertically against wall as shown in Figure 11. Press in on either of the read buttons (D)
and continue holding in button.
2.) The unit will beep once while it is calibrating and will display the metal symbol on the
LCD screen.

detected the LCD screen will begin to display a row of black boxes , slow down and
keep sliding until the LCD screen displays a full row of boxes and the beep sounds as
shown in Figure 10. Mark this spot at the middle of the unit.
Note: Because metal pipes or objects can be oriented both vertically and
horizontally behind a wall, you should scan both vertically and horizontally as
shown in Figure 11.
AC Wire Mode
For AC Wire sensing through up to 2 inches (50mm) thick drywall.
1.) Move slide switch (E) to the AC WIRE position (middle right). Hold unit in air away from

boxes , slow down and keep sliding until the LCD screen displays a full row of boxes
and the beep sounds. Mark this spot.
The sensor detects AC voltage and will identify only “live” wires. If the unit is calibrated close
to AC wire, it may decrease AC wiring sensor sensitivity. Static charge may spread detection
12 inch (30.4cm) on both sides of wire.
WARNING: Occasionally, pipes and electrical wiring may not be detected by this
product. Observe caution when cutting or drilling into areas that may contain concealed
pipes or wiring. The sensor will not detect live wires inside metal pipe or metal conduit,
behind metallic wall covering, or behind some plywood or other dense materials.
Use caution if area has plywood, thick wood backing behind drywall, or thicker than normal walls.
WARNING: Always turn off the power when working near electrical wires,
electric shock may result.
