ROCSAFE ENCRYPTED HARD DRIVE FOR NOTEBOOKS
About this Guide
This guide is designed to provide step-by-step
instructions for installation of Rocsafe and as a reference
for its operation and usage.
1. Product Overview
Rocsecure continues to deliver the next generation
encrypted technologies to drive new levels of security,
performance and ease-of-use in a 2.5” internal Real-Time
encrypted hard drive solutions. Rocsafe 2.5” internal
Hardware encrypted drives are designed to be mounted
within your notebook computer just like the existing hard
disk drive that is currently installed in your notebook.
Rocsafe is a secure storage device that consists of a hard
disk drive and a hardware based encryption module that
encrypts every byte and every sector of data that is
written into the hard disk. Rocsafe is operating system
independent and does not require any software drivers. It
also encrypts all temporary files, as well as areas that
would normally be missed and left in “clear” by software
encryption products. Encryption and decryption occurs
transparently without any loss in disk performance (Real-
Time.) Users simply use their notebooks as usual with the
assurance and complete peace of mind that their data is
fully protected in the unfortunate event that their
notebooks are stolen or lost.
Rocsafe is a hardware-based disk encryption solution that
is both cross-platform compatible and delivers significant
performance improvement over traditional software-based
products. Rocsafe provides full security features in a
standard notebook-mountable 2.5" hard-disk form-factor.
5
Rocsafe is available in 64-bits, 128-bits and 192-bits
3DES encryption engine that encrypts every sector of
data written into the hard disk, including the Master Boot
Record (MBR), Operating System, Temporary files and
Swap files that are normally left in "clear" by traditional
software-based encryption solutions. Rocsafe encrypts
and decrypts all data transparently without any loss in
disk performance. Rocsafe is easy to install and simple to
use. After installation, users use their notebook
computers as usual with the assurance that their data is
fully protected should their computers be lost or stolen.
Peace of Mind Carrying Important Data in Your Notebook
Computer
Rocsecure understands your real-world storage challenges
and we help you meet them with a complete range of
flexible encrypted storage solutions that address all your
critical storage needs both today and into the future.
Rocsafe is specially engineered for those who need to be
concerned about the security of the data in their
notebook computers. Those users include business
executives, lawyers, accountants, doctors, government
officials …or any person carries sensitive information or
secret documents in their notebook computers.
A Highly Secure, Reliable and Cost-Effective
Solution Cross Platform Compatibility
Rocsafe does not require hardware modifications or
software installations. I t is operating system independent
(tested with Windows® XP, 2000, Me, 98, 98SE and
Linux), driver-less, and has been tested on leading
brands of notebook computers (including Acer, Dell,
IBM, Sony and Toshiba). Rocsafe installation is extremely
easy. Users simply replace their old 2.5" hard disk with
Rocsafe, perform a simple one-time setup procedure, and
6
they are ready to go.
Significant Performance Improvement
Rocsafe eliminates platform dependency issues
completely and offers the following performance
improvements over traditional software-based disk
encryption solutions:
The encryption and decryption operations are totally
transparent to users. Users do not have to change their
computing behavior.
All the data written into the Rocsafe is encrypted in real-
time using hardware, prior to actual storage, leaving no
data in "clear". By performing security operations in
hardware, Rocsafe cannot be compromised by software
attacks such as Viruses and Trojans.
The total cost of ownership is minimized because no
software installations, upgrades, or patches are ever
required. Moreover the product does not require user
training or maintenance.
The 3DES encryption engine by Enova X-Wall is certified
by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
of the USA and CSE (Communications Security
Establishment) of the government of Canada
Pre-Boot Authentication - Single- or Two-Factor
Rocsafe authenticates the user every time the notebook
computer powers on or resumes from hibernation. The
notebook computer will only boot into the Operating
System upon successful authentication. Rocsafe offers
two authentication modes - Single-Factor using a
Password only, or Two-Factor using the Roc-crypt USB
token and a Password.
7
Single-Factor Authentication:
In this mode of Authentication, the user is prompted for
a Password at the pre-boot stage after power-on. Rocsafe
grants access to the user if the correct password is
presented.
Two-Factor Authentication:
In this mode of Authentication, the user is prompted for
the keyCrypt® USB cryptographic token (something you
have), as well as the password for the token (something
you know). Rocsafe grants access only if the correct
token and password is presented.
Migration
The Rocsafe Toolkit enables the user to migrate
seamlessly from the original hard disk to Rocsafe,
preserving the software operating environment without
additional modification of the notebook computer.
Data Backup
The Rocsafe Toolkit also allows the user to mirror
periodic and incremental snapshots of the hard disk
onto another external drive can be stored securely,
ensuring business continuity in the unfortunate event of
a notebook being lost or stolen.

the PIN (PASSWORD) for the token.
Note: The default PIN for KeyCrypt token is ”password”.
IMPORTANT:
The number of WRONG PIN attempts before KeyCrypt
PIN is blocked is 8. The number of wrong PIN
attempts is only reset after you enter the correct PIN.
After KeyCrypt is blocked, you will not be able to use
KeyCrypt to log in. To continue using Rocsafe after
your KeyCrypt is blocked, you have to reset the
20
account (see section on “Resetting Account”) using
your Administrator Password.
Note: You can revert back to using password only by
selecting the “Enable Password Login” option.
3.5 Authentication in Token Mode
Once Rocsafe is in Token Mode, you will be prompted

wrong PIN attempts is only reset after you enter the
correct PIN. After KeyCrypt is blocked, you will not be
able to use KeyCrypt to log in. To continue using
Rocsafe after your KeyCrypt is blocked, you have to
reset the account (see section on “Resetting
Account”) using your Administrator Password.
IMPORTANT Note: If you leave the KeyCrypt token in
the USB port when the operating system boots up, the
operating system might prompt you to install
drivers for KeyCrypt. This is the default behavior
of the operating system. You can safely cancel
21
the installation and remove the KeyCrypt token
from the USB port. Rocsafe does not require
operating system drivers to be installed.
3.6 Special Options
This option allows you to enable Persistent
Authentication. Usually, this option is not required.
Select this option only when your notebook displays
the login screen again after a successful login.
Caution: Please be careful in selecting the HDD to be
partitioned and formatted, once the partition and format
are done, all of the files on the HDD will be erased.
Caution: Do not unplug your Rocsafe hard drive while
Active or in a process of Transferring, Storing, files as
this could result in data loss and disk damage.
Caution: Do not DROP or JOLT your Rocsafe Hard Drive
or attempt to open the drive and service it yourself. These
actions will void the warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is Rocsafe?
Rocsafe is a hardware based encryption solution for
protecting data on notebooks. It contains an encryption
engine and a hard disk housed in a tamper-proof casing,
and is a direct replacement for ordinary 2.5” notebook
hard drives. It offers two modes of authentication –
Password or Token. Password mode requires the user to
enter a password for authentication. Token mode
implements a strong two factor authentication
mechanism that requires the user to insert his/her Roc-
crypt, USB token and to enter his/her PIN (PASSWORD)
for authentication.
2. How easy is it to start using a new Rocsafe?
It is very simple and straightforward. If you are starting
afresh, just plug Rocsafe into the notebook like a normal
hard disk and boot from it. Once authentication is done,
Rocsafe will present itself as a normal hard drive with
20GB or 30GB capacity. You can install an Operating
System and start using it just like a normal hard drive.
If you’re already using an existing hard drive and would
like to migrate all your data to Rocsafe, you purchase the
optional Rocsafe Toolkit. First, simply connect the old
hard disk to the USB port of the notebook using the
Rocsafe Toolkit USB enclosure. Then, boot up with the
Rocsafe Toolkit CD and follow the on-screen instructions.
23
3. What is the advantage of using Rocsafe over
encryption software to protect data?
• Unlike existing software solutions, Rocsafe encrypts
very single sector of the hard disk. This means all
temporary files, all partitions and even the boot sector is
encrypted.
• One major disadvantage of existing software disk
encryption products is that they are Operating System
(mostly Windows) dependent. Rocsafe is independent of
the OS or the host system BIOS and thus support any
OS.
• Rocsafe does not involve any tedious and error-prone
software installation and configuration. Just plug Rocsafe
in the notebook, authenticate yourself and you are ready
to go.
• Once installed, Rocsafe does not require any
maintenance or patches thus reducing the total cost of
ownership of the product.
• There are also no performance overheads due to
encryption/decryption of data, unlike software-based
solutions.
4 . Does Rocsafe support two-factor authentication?
Yes. If you purchase the optional Rocsecure, Rocsafe's
Token mode can enabled to support two-factor
authentication.
24
5. What happens when the user forgets the password or
loses the USB token?
In such a case, the administrator’s password can be used
to reset the user password. Thus, the user will able to
resume his/her work even after forgetting the password or
losing the token.
6. Is the boot sector of Rocsafe also encrypted?
Yes, Rocsafe encrypts every sector of the hard disk drive.
This means every single byte of information being stored
on the hard disk is encrypted.
7. Does encryption slow down the performance of
Rocsafe in comparison with normal, unencrypted hard
disks?
No. The on-the-fly encryption and decryption engine in
Rocsafe is faster than the data transfer speed of the IDE
interface and thus does not incur any performance
overheads.
8. How strong is the encryption of Rocsafe?
Rocsafe uses the NIST certified DES and Triple-DES
encryption schemes. The key-strength offered by Rocsafe
currently is 64, 128 and 192 bits. Key strength of 64
bits provides sufficient security for most notebook users.
If the data is highly confidential, key strengths of 128
and 192 bits are recommended.
25
9. Can Rocsafe be used as a secondary or a slave hard
disk?
Although Rocsafe is designed only to be used as a
primary master, work is underway to make it function as
a secondary or a slave drive, even as a portable drive
using a USB-to-IDE interface.
10. What is the capacity of Rocsafe?
Currently, Rocsafe comes in a capacity of 20GB or
30GB. In the future, Rocsafe will be available with larger
capacities.
11. Are there problems relating to hibernate or standby
when using Rocsafe?
Due to security reasons, Rocsafe does not support the
Standby feature although the Hibernate feature is fully
supported. The user is advised to deactivate the Standby
feature and “Turn off hard disks” feature in the power
options section in control panel before using Rocsafe.
To save power, users are advised to hibernate instead.
When the notebook is switched on in a state of
hibernation, the user must authenticate himself/herself
before Windows resumes from hibernation.
12. Can password or PIN be changed later without having
to lose data?
Yes, password or token PIN (PASSWORD) can be easily
changed during the time of authentication without having
to lose any data stored in the hard disk.
26
13. What if I want to keep the data on my existing hard
disk?
You can migrate the data on your existing hard disk to
Rocsafe with the optional Rocsafe Toolkit.
14. What is the indicative price of Rocsafe? Where and
how can I buy?
Please contact your authorize dealer.
