1 General Information
1.1 Overview
The freeConnect 2400 provides an easy and inexpensive way to create or extend your network.
With its 24 10/100Mbps ports supporting up to 200 Mbps of bandwidth per port, adding
additional clients is fast and simple. Its chassis is designed to fit into a standard 19” rack and
only takes up 1U of space, ideal for medium to large workgroups.
The freeConnect 2400 uses store-and-forward switching to ensure that the buffer is allocated
efficiently for each port, while controlling the data flow between nodes to prevent packet loss.

2 Installation
2.1 Installation Tips
When installing the freeConnect 2400, keep the following points in mind:
Install the unit in a cool and dry place. Refer to the specifications (Section 3.1) for details on
permissible temperature and humidity ranges.
Install the unit in a location free from electromagnetic interference, vibrations, dust, and
direct exposure to sunlight.
Leave at least 4” (10 cm) of space at the front and rear of the unit for ventilation.
Install the unit on a strong, sturdy surface that can support its weight, or in an EIA standard-
size rack.
When placing the unit on a surface, attach the rubber feet included with the unit to prevent
scratching the surface.
2.2 Mounting in a Rack
The switch can be mounted in an EIA standard-size, 19-inch rack, which can be placed in a
wiring closet along with other equipment. Attach the mounting brackets to the switch’s front
panel (one on each side), and secure them with the screws provided (Figure 2-1).
Figure 2-1: Attaching Brackets
Once the brackets are attached, use the screws provided with the rack to install the unit into the
rack (Figure 2-2).

2.3 Front Panel
The following items can be found on the front panel of the freeConnect 2400 (Figure 2-3).
Figure 2-3: Front Panel
Power LED
This indicator will light up green when the switch is receiving power.
Link / Activity LED
The LED for each port will light up green when the port is connected to an active device, and will
flash when data is being transmitted or received.
100Mbps LED
The LED for each port will light up green when the port is connected to a device that supports
100Mbps Fast Ethernet. If there is no connection or the connection is only 10Mbps Ethernet,
the LED will be off.
Ethernet Ports
These ports support automatic MDI/MDIX crossover detection which gives you true ‘plug and
play’ capability when it comes to using straight-through cables or crossover cables. With this
feature, you won’t have to worry about whether you need a straight-through or crossover
network cable, the freeConnect 2400 will automatically detect the type of cable and compensate
for it if necessary.
2.4 Rear Panel
The AC power receptacle is located on the rear panel of the freeConnect 2400 (Figure 2-4).
The receptacle is a three-pronged connector that connects to the power cable included with the
unit. Supported input voltage ranges are 100-240 AC at 50-60Hz.

in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures.
VCCI Warning
This is a product is compliant with VCCI Class A specifications.
UL Warning
a) Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature-If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly,
the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room
ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an
environment compatible with the manufacturer's maximum rated ambient temperature
(Tmra).
b) Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of
air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
c) Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a
hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.
d) Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to
the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of circuits might have on over current
protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings
should be used when addressing this concern.
e) Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained.
Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to
the branch circuit (e.g., use of power strips).
