1 Product Overview
Introduction
The 3Com Baseline Switch 2824 and the 3Com Baseline Switch 2816
are versatile, easy-to-use, unmanaged gigabit switches. It is ideal for
users who want the high-speed performance of 10/100/1000 switching
but do not need sophisticated management functions. The Switch is
shipped ready for use, and operational straight out of the box. No
configuration is necessary. Your 3Com Baseline Switch incorporates
the latest in Green technology to yield more than 20% power savings
over the previous generation technology.

z 2824: 48Gbps
Auto MDI/MDIX Supported on all ports.
Traffic Prioritization
The Switch offers priority queuing, which
means all packets that are received are
examined to see if they have been priority
encoded. When a packet is received, the
Switch will read the priority level and
determine the appropriate queue to
forward the packet based on the priority
level. High priority data is forwarded
through the Switch without being delayed
by lower priority data.
This feature can be useful, for example,
during excessive loads when one type of
traffic may require priority over another.
The Switch is configured to comply with
802.1 p, VLAN tagged frames.
Notes:
The traffic prioritization feature supported
by the Switch is compatible with the
relevant sections of the IEEE 802.1 D
standard (incorporating IEEE 802.1 p).

Feature Description
Ethernet Ports
The Switch has 24/16 10/100/1000 Mbps
auto-negotiating ports. Each port
automatically negotiates with the attached
device to determine the correct speed and
duplex mode of operation. Once
negotiated, the port will operate in one of
the following modes:
z 10BASE-T half duplex
z 10BASE-T full duplex
z 100BASE-TX half duplex
z 100BASE-TX full duplex
z 1000BASE-T full duplex
WARNING:
RJ-45 ports. These are shielded RJ-45
data sockets. They cannot be used as
standard traditional telephone sockets, or
to connect the unit to a traditional PBX or
public telephone network. Only connect
RJ-45 data connectors, network telephony
systems, or network telephones to these
sockets. Either shielded or unshielded
data cables with shielded or unshielded
jacks can be connected to these data
sockets.
Mounting 19-inch rack or standalone mounting.
Fanless design
Silent operation whether used in a rack or
desktop situation.
Green Technology
When no connection exists or a short
network cable is used, power consumption
can be reduced automatically to save
energy.

Network Design
The Switch provides high performance switched connections to 10
Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1000 Mbps hubs, switches, servers and
workstations that need a dedicated switched link.
The following figure illustrates one possible configuration. Each port
has a shielded RJ-45 connector on the front panel. Each port is
capable of operating at 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps. Each port
can automatically determine the speed and the duplex mode of the
connected equipment and provides a suitable switched connection. At
10 Mbps and at 100 Mbps, the ports can operate in half or full duplex
mode. At 1000 Mbps, the ports operate in full duplex mode only.

2 Installing the Switch
WARNING: Safety Information. Before you install or remove
any components from the Switch or carry out any maintenance
procedures, you must read the safety information in Appendix A:
Safety Information in this guide.
Sicherheitsanweisungen, die in Anhang A in diesem Handbuch
10
OSTRZEŻENIE: Informacje o zabezpieczeniach. Przed
instalacją lub usunięciem jakichkolwiek elementów z product lub
przeprowadzeniem prac konserwacyjnych należy zapoznać się z
informacjami o bezpieczeństwie zawartymi w Załączniku A
niniejszego podręcznika.

Package Contents
The switch packaging contains the following for all units:
z One product sealed in a plastic bag
z One power cord for use with the Switch
z One User Guide
z One Installation Guide(LAT-Spanish and Portuguese only)
z One warranty card
z One Rack Mounting Kit
z Four self-adhesive rubber pads
Positioning the Switch
The switch is suited for use in an internal wiring closet, a network
room, or telecommunications room, where it can be mounted in a
standard 19-inch equipment rack, or free-standing.
11
Ensure that the ventilation holes are not obstructed.
When deciding where to position the switch, ensure that:
z Cabling is located away from:
Sources of electrical noise such as radios, transmitters and
broadband amplifiers.
Power lines and fluorescent lighting fixtures.
z The switch is accessible and cables can be connected easily.
z Water or moisture cannot enter the case of the switch.
z Air flow is not restricted around the switch or through the vents in
the side of the switch. 3Com recommends that you provide a
minimum of 25 mm (1 in.) clearance.
z The temperature around the switch does not exceed 40 °C (104
°F).
If the switch is installed in a 19-inch rack or closed assembly its local
air temperature may be greater than room ambient temperature.
z The air is as free from dust as possible.
z The switch is situated away from sources of conductive
(electrical) dust, for example laser printers.
z The unit is installed in a clean, air conditioned environment.
12
z The AC supply used by the switch is separate from that used by
units that generate high levels of AC noise, for example air
conditioning units.
z No more than four switch units are placed on top of one another,
if the units are free-standing.
Rack Mounting
The Switch is 1U high and fits in most standard 19-inch racks.
z Disconnect all cables from the switch before continuing. Remove
all self adhesive pads from the underside of the switch if they
have been fitted.
z If you use a shelf or support ensure that it will not obstruct the air
flow through the side panels of the switch.
To rack-mount the switch:
1) Place the switch the right way up on a hard flat surface, with the
front facing towards you.
2) Locate a securing bracket over the mounting holes on one side of
the front of the switch, as shown in
Figure 2-1.
3) Insert the two screws and tighten with a suitable screwdriver.
13
Figure 2-1 Fitting a front bracket for rack-mounting
You must use the screws supplied with the securing brackets.
Damage caused to the unit by using incorrect screws invalidates your
warranty.
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the switch.
5) Insert the switch into the 19-inch rack and secure with suitable
screws. Ensure that ventilation holes are not obstructed.
6) Reconnect network cables.
Powering On
The following steps describe how to get the switch powered-on and
ready for operation.
1) Check the network connections and cables.
2) Connect the power supply cable to the appropriate power socket
located on the rear panel of the unit.
