Your Panasonic oven is equipped with
the latest technology, known as Inverter
technology. This unique technology has
long been used in Japan for microwave
ovens, and offers a dramatic improvement
in the cooking performance of your oven.
The system also reduces the number of
components, giving the oven a greater
internal volume and a reduced weight, but
without taking up extra space on your work
surface.
The items in this book are guidelines only.
The total time will vary depending on the
starting temperature of the food and the
container used. Always check if the food is
piping hot before consumption.

Microwaving principles
Microwaves are present in the atmosphere all
the time, both naturally and from manmade
sources. Manmade sources include radar,
radio, television, telecommunication links and
mobile phones.

In a microwave oven, electricity is converted
into microwaves by the Magnetron. For
bottom feeding, please refer to page 24 of
operating instructions.
Reection
The microwaves bounce off the metal walls
and the metal door screen.
Transmission
Then they pass through the cooking
containers to be absorbed by the
water molecules in the food, all foods
contain water to a more or lesser extent.
Important note
The dish used to cook or reheat the
food will get warm during cooking,
as the heat conducts from the food.
Even in microwaving, oven gloves
are required!
Microwaves can not
pass through metal and therefore
metal cooking utensils can never
be used in a microwave, for
cooking on microwave only.
How microwaves cook food
The microwaves cause the water molecules
to vibrate which causes
friction
, i.e.
heat
.
This heat then cooks the food.
Microwaves are also attracted to fat and
sugar particles, and foods high in these will
cook more quickly. Microwaves can only
penetrate to a depth of 4-5 cm and as heat
spreads through the food by conduction, just
as in a traditional oven, the food cooks from
the outside inwards.
Foods not suitable for cooking by
microwave only
Soufes etc. This is because these foods
rely on dry external heat to cook correctly,
do not attempt to cook by microwave.
Foods that require deep fat frying cannot be
cooked either.
Standing time
When a microwave oven is switched off, the
food will continue to cook by conduction –
not by microwave energy.
Hence
standing
time
is very important in microwaving,
particularly for dense foods i.e. meat, cakes
and reheated meals (refer to page 3).
Boiled eggs
Do not boil eggs in your microwave.
Raw eggs boiled in their shells can
explode and cause serious injury.

General guidelines
Standing time
Dense foods e.g. meat, jacket potatoes and
cakes, require a
standing time
(inside or
outside of the oven) after cooking, to allow
heat to nish conducting through the food.
Jacket potatoes
Wrap in aluminium foil once cooked by
microwave only. Stand for 5 minutes. It
is not necessary to stand jacket potatoes
cooked in
combination
mode.
Fish
Stand for 2-3 minutes.
Egg dishes
Stand for 1-2 minutes.
Precooked convenience food
Stand for 2-3 minutes.
Moisture content
Many fresh foods e.g. vegetables
and fruit, vary in their moisture
content throughout the season.
Jacket potatoes are a particular
example of this. For this reason
cooking times may have to be
adjusted throughout the year. Dry
ingredients e.g. rice, pasta, can
dry out during storage so cooking
times may differ from ingredients
freshly purchased.
Cling lm
Cling lm helps keep the food
moist and the trapped steam
assists in speeding up cooking
times. However it should be
pierced before cooking, to allow
excess steam to escape.
Always take care when
removing cling lm from a dish
as the build-up of steam will be
very hot. Always purchase cling
lm that states on the packet
“suitable for microwave
cooking” and use as a covering
only. Do not line dishes with
cling lm. Do not cover foods
when cooking by
grill, oven
or
combination.
Piercing
The skin or membrane on some
foods will cause steam to build
up during cooking. These foods
must be pierced or a strip of
skin should be peeled off before
cooking to allow the steam to
escape. Eggs, potatoes, apples,
sausages etc, will all need to be
pierced before cooking.
Do not
attempt to boil eggs in their
shells.
Meat joints
Stand 15 minutes wrapped in aluminium
foil.
Plated meals
Stand for 2-3 minutes.
Vegetables
Boiled potatoes benet from standing for
1-2 minutes, however most other types of
vegetables can be served immediately.
Defrosting
It is essential to allow standing time to
complete the process. This can vary from
5 minutes. e.g. raspberries, to 1-2 hours for
a joint of meat. See pages 23-25.
If food is not cooked after
standing time

Arranging

Foods containing fat, sugar or
salt heat up very quickly. The
lling may be much hotter than
the pastry. Take care when
eating.
Do not

if the pastry does not appear
to be very hot.
Starting temperature
The colder the food, the longer
it takes to heat up. Food from
a fridge takes longer to reheat
than food at room temperature.
Food temperature should
be between 5-8 °C before
cooking.
Turning and stirring

during cooking. Meat and
poultry should be turned after
half the cooking time.
Liquids
All liquids must be stirred
before, during and after
heating.
Water especially must

checked during and after a

has been used (just as you

Cleaning

particles, keep your oven clean
at all times. Stubborn spots of
food can be removed by using a
branded oven cleaner, sprayed
onto a soft cloth. Always wipe the
oven dry after cleaning. Avoid
any plastic parts and door area.

Oven heating allows you to cook food using
top and bottom heat. No microwaves
are used in oven heating mode: you can
therefore use any metal dishes or heat-
resistant containers.
NB: temperatures between 40 and 100 °C,
which are not used in traditional cooking, are
not available on this oven.
Preheating
Remember to preheat the oven for the best
results when cooking meat, cakes and
pastries. It is preferable not to open the oven
door whilst it is preheating. Do not preheat
the oven with the accessory inside.
Accessories
You can cook food directly on the Square
Panacrunch Pan in the lower or upper shelf
positions. Or you can place your standard
metal baking tins and ovenware on the
Square Panacrunch Pan in the lower shelf
position. Do not place tins and ovenware
directly on the base of the oven in oven
mode.
Recommended for puff pastry, cookies, roll
cakes, brioche, sponge cakes, pizzas and
tarts.
Note
Do not place any dish or food which
weighs more then 3.2 kg on the
Square Panacrunch Pan.

Steam cooking

There are 3 different steam levels available.
Use the steam mode to cook vegetables,
sh, chicken and rice.
The oven has 3 steam settings:

Accessories and containers
When steaming place food directly on the
oven accessory in the upper shelf position.
For steaming larger food items, place the
accessory in the lower shelf position. During
steaming, cooking juices collect in the
watercourse of the pan. (see page 33 of the
operating instructions).
Caution
The accessories and surrounding oven will get very hot. Use oven gloves.
When removing the food or cooking accessories, hot water may drip from the oven
top.
Steam may billow out when you open the door. If there is steam in the oven, do not
reach in with your bare hands! Risk of burns! Use oven gloves.
Take care when removing the drip tray. Wipe any water that drips from the left side
of the oven. This is normal.

What is combination cooking?
Combination cooking adds microwaves to
the traditional cooking process in order to
obtain the taste of traditionally cooked food
whilst reducing cooking times by a third or
by half.
How does it work?
Follow the instructions on pages 36-39 of
the Operating Instructions.
Warning!
Choose the cooking methods in the correct
order. The combined cooking methods in
this book are given in the order from which
they can be chosen. During cooking, simply
touching Oven will display the temperature
used. The temperature can be changed
by tapping Oven whilst the temperature
is displayed, however it is not possible
to change the microwave power during
combination cooking.
When to preheat?
For slow-cooking, simmering, large pieces
of meat, poultry, most cakes, ans and
gratins it is not necessary to preheat
the oven. For short cooking times, small
pieces of meat (cooking times of less than
20 minutes), tarts, pies, desserts using puff
pastry, it is necessary to preheat the oven.
For combination cooking using the grill only,
the oven must not and cannot be preheated.
The inside of the oven is smaller than
that of a traditional oven, therefore take
extra care not to burn yourself when you
put the dish into the oven.
With preheating
It is only possible to preheat on Steam and
Oven mode. Choose combination cooking
then touch Start before entering the cooking
time.
Preheating takes place without
microwaves being used. Do not preheat
with the accessory in place. When the
oven reaches the required temperature,
it makes 3 beeps and “P” ashes in the
display. Put the dish into the oven (without
touching the Stop/Cancel), choose the
cooking time and touch Start. Unless you do
this, the oven will maintain its temperature
for 30 minutes then turn itself off.
Without preheating
Choose combination cooking, display the
cooking time and then touch Start.

For most recipes, it is best to use containers
which are both microwave safe and heat
resistant (Pyrex® or ovenproof porcelain).
If you notice any sparks, stop the oven
and continue cooking using oven
heating or, if possible change the
container.
Do not use porcelain with gold or silver
decoration. Sparks could be produced
which would damage the decoration.
Do not use cling lm during combination
cooking, even to line the inside of a tin.

Most foods reheat very quickly in your oven
by 1000 W power. Meals can be brought
back to serving temperature in just minutes
and will taste freshly cooked. Always check
food is piping hot and return to oven if
necessary.
As a general rule, always cover wet foods,
e.g. soups, casseroles and plated meals.
Do not cover dry foods e.g. bread rolls,
mince pies, sausage rolls etc.
The charts on pages 14-21 show you the
best way to cook or reheat your favourite
foods. The best method depends on the
type of food.
The heat method i.e. Microwave only or
combination depends on the food to be
reheated. For foods that do not require
browning, reheat by microwave only.
Remember when cooking or reheating
any food that it should be stirred or turned
wherever possible. This ensures even
cooking or reheating on the outside and in
the centre.
When is food reheated?
Food that has been reheated or cooked
should be served “piping hot” i.e. steam
should be visibly emitted from all parts. As
long as good hygiene practices have been
followed during the preparation and storage
of the food, then cooking or reheating
presents no safety risks.
Foods that cannot be stirred should be cut
with a knife to test that they are adequately
heated throughout. Even if a manufacturers
instructions or the times in the cookbook
have been followed, it is still important to
check the food is heated thoroughly. If in
doubt, always return to the oven for further
reheating.
If you cannot nd the equivalent food in
the chart then choose a similar type and
size listed and adjust the cooking time if
necessary.
Remember even if the pastry is cold to the
touch, the lling will be piping hot and will
warm the pastry through. Take care not to
overheat otherwise burning can occur due
to the high fat and sugar content of the
lling. Check the temperature of the lling
before consuming to avoid burning your
mouth.
Do not leave unattended. Do not add extra
alcohol.
Caution - Babies’ bottles
Milk or formula
must
be shaken
thoroughly before heating and again
at the end and tested carefully
before feeding a baby. Liquid at the
top of the bottle will be much hotter
than at the bottom. The bottle must
be shaken thoroughly and tested
before use.
Note
We do not recommend that you
use your microwave to sterilise
babies’ bottles.
If you have a special
microwave steriliser we urge extreme
caution, due to the low quantity of
water involved. It is vital to follow the
manufacturers instructions implicitly.

Use a bowl and stir before heating and at
least once through reheat time and again at
the end.
Casseroles
Stir halfway through and again at the end of
heating.
Plated meals
Everyone’s appetite varies and reheat times
depend on meal contents. Dense items
e.g. mashed potato, should be spread out
well. If a lot of gravy is added, extra time
may be required. Place denser items to the
outside of the plate. Between 4-7 minutes.
