1. INTRODUCTION
The Advent XT2 assisted living call management system consists of a resident’s intercom which is linked directly to
an onsite Manager’s cordless handset and a touch-screen Manager’s display panel. The system connects offsite to
a 24-hour Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). In addition to this the Advent XT2 system can be combined with a fully
integrated door entry system reducing the need for two separate infrastructures.
Although analogue PSTN connectivity has been used to connect grouped living systems to Alarm
Receiving Centres for over 40 years, a recent statement from OFCOM stated that all existing
analogue telephone lines will be replaced with digital Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructures in the
coming years. The Advent XT2 digitally enabled assisted living system is built on a new digital
platform to provide a reliable and future proofed digital connection, ensuring continuity of service
after the digital migration.
The Advent XT2 offers these additional features compared to the previous Advent XT system;

4. MAINTENANCE & CARE
For peace of mind and to ensure your system is maintained to the highest standard Tynetec recommend an annual
maintenance contract. This will provide vital assistance in times of need from a nationwide team of trained Service
Engineers who specialise in Assisted Living systems.
A preventative maintenance visit (PMV) is also recommended, this covers the replacement of all batteries, a full
system test, software updates (where applicable) and a Service Certificate.
For more information on Maintenance Contract Packages and PMV’s please contact your local Tynetec Approved
Installer, a list can be found on our website; www.tynetec.co.uk/installer-locator
MONTHLY MAINTENANCE
All user interface equipment i.e. intercoms, door entry telephones, pendants, cordless & desk handsets should be
regularly cleaned with anti-bacterial wipes, at the same time they should be checked for signs of external physical
damage. Broken or cracked plastic cases can trap dirt and contribute to the spread of germs. Products needing repair
can be returned via the website; www.tynetec.co.uk/returns-policy
ANNUAL MAINTENANCE
Although the XT2 controller batteries are monitored and a poor state of charge is reported automatically it is best
practice to have the batteries tested every year and replaced every 5 years. The optional PA amplifier uses the same
battery, and this should be tested/replaced at the same time - see section 28/29 for the correct battery type. At the
same time a full system test should be performed to ensure all equipment is operating correctly.
In the unlikely event that the XT2 controller needs to be turned-off or reset, please ensure all active
calls are actioned before proceeding.

7. CONTROLLER INSTALLATION
MAINS SUPPLY CONNECTION
The 240V AC mains connection should be taken from the landlord’s supply and terminated via an un-switched fused
spur with neon alongside the controller. The typical power requirement for a standard 32-way Advent XT2 system is
15 Watts.
Connect the Advent XT2 controller to the fused spur using the 3-core flex and IEC socket provided. Secure the flex to
the chassis using a cable tie to prevent the mains lead being inadvertently unplugged. The spur should be fitted with a
5A fuse. If the flex is replaced always ensure the ferrite core is re-fitted as close as possible to the IEC socket.
27V SMPSU MODULE
The Advent XT2 controller includes a 27V/150W (5.6A) switched mode power supply unit with solid state over-load,
over-voltage and over-temperature protection. With the mains connected the green Supply Healthy LED should be
illuminated. The output voltage is factory set to 27.5V DC with the batteries disconnected using a DVM across V+/V-.
BATTERY STANDBY
In the event of a mains failure, two 12V 5Ah rechargeable batteries will maintain a typical
system for approx. 12 hours. A protection circuit will disconnect the battery supply in the
event of prolonged mains failure to prevent damage to the batteries. The mains supply
must be applied first to energise the protection circuit, i.e. the system will not function
by simply connecting the batteries alone. An optional external battery box is available
to extend the battery standby time to 24 hours see section 13.

7. CONTROLLER INSTALLATION
TELEPHONE LINE CONNECTION
The 2 Telecom leads provided with the Advent XT2 controller are used to connect the PSTN1 & PSTN2 ports to the
master sockets provided by telephone company.
If an Ethernet connection to a Digital IP-ARC is being used then PSTN line(s) are not essential.
The Digital IP-ARC can receive calls and dial-in to the XT2 system remotely using the NOW-IP protocol.
IMPORTANT: to allow for remote dial-in to the XT2 system from a non-digital system (e.g. a local offsite Manager’s
mobile phone or fixed line telephone), a PSTN line must be connected to the XT2 system.
The 2 RJ11 leads provided with the Matrix IP-PBX are used to connect the DECT 1 & DECT 2 ports to the IP-PBX CO1 &
CO3 lines. If the DECT requires access to an external telephone line, then this should be connected to the IP-PBX CO2.
If a PBX is not fitted, then up to 4 standard telephones (REN 1) can be connected per DECT port.
ETHERNET CONNECTION
The Ethernet 2 port (CON4) on the XT2 Controller
should be connected to an ADSL router or a
mobile broadband router if offsite calls are being
reported to a Digital IP-ARC.
Refer to the Digital Connectivity Options
(Tynetec Doc. No. FM0903) to obtain the necessary
information when setting-up the Ethernet connection.
MICRO SD CARD REMOVAL
Ensure there are no active calls on the system.
Touch the display in the XT2 controller, enter the Engineer’s password, select Maintenance from the
System Tools group then select Unmount Micro SD Card before removing the card.
Push down to release the SD card mechanical latch, to refit push down until the latch clicks into place.
ATTENTION: Electrostatic Sensitive Device - observe precautions for handling.
Only use a Swissbit industrial Micro SD card type: SFSD1024N1BN1TO-E-DF-161-STD (Tynetec Part No. W01241).
IMPORTANT NOTE REF. RE-USING EXISTING NETWORK WIRING
Given the critical nature of grouped living systems and an increasing demand on data requirements, it’s imperative
that the infrastructure being utilised is of a sound nature. If installing new system hardware onto existing cable
infrastructures, it's vitally important to ensure that the cable being used, is in good condition as degradation can lead
to reduced levels of system performance. Although cables are generally long lasting (more than 25 years), with both
the insulation and central core being very stable, where the cable is subjected to contact points or when exposed to
high levels of UV, there is always a possibility that it can deteriorate over time. We would therefore recommend that
any existing cable infrastructure be inspected (especially around junction boxes or where the cable is exposed to
sunlight) to ensure that there are no signs of brittleness or metal oxidisation. In addition to visual inspections, it is also
good practice to carry out resistance testing to determine whether there are any hidden losses in cable continuity. If
degradation is detected, we would always recommend that the cable is replaced before continuing with the
installation of any new hardware.
Advent XT2
Ethernet 2
Port (CON4)
Doc No. FM0804 issue 15 Page 12
8. NETWORK WIRING
The Advent XT2 system requires a minimum of 5 twisted pairs common to all intercom units if you plan to re-use the
existing site wiring refer to the EXISTING NETWORK WIRING statement on the previous page. On new installations a 6
pair CW1308 cable is recommended; 1 pair for 24V, 1 pair for 0V, 1 pair for data and 3 pairs for audio.
Plan the network route carefully to minimise cable length using the intercom units to join the cable thereby avoiding
additional joint boxes in corridors or roof areas etc. On large installations the network should be split into two or three
smaller legs to reduce the effect of voltage drop and aid future service/fault finding.
The network cable length should not exceed 1200 metres and the total number of network devices on an RS485 data
bus must not exceed 255. A data repeater (P/No. ZXT340) is available for extreme cases.
Single auxiliary devices such as external Manager callpoints, lift speech units and network receivers can be connected
to the system network wiring as shown above.
To reduce the likelihood of data corruption it is not recommended to split the network wiring into multiple legs from a
mid-point in the wiring. Small groups of intercoms spurred off at any point should also be avoided.
If the existing site wiring has spurs of intercoms it is recommended that they are re-wired into the main network or
isolated and connected back separately to the controller as additional legs see below;
Detailed site plans and existing wiring details are imperative before designing an installation.

9. NETWORK LOAD CONSIDERATIONS
It is very important to take voltage-drop across the system network into consideration when planning an installation.
It is the cable resistance on the power supply wiring that gives rise to voltage-drop, the longer the cable run and the
larger the current requirement the larger the voltage-drop. To perform a detailed assessment of voltage-drop is
complex; you need to know the current requirement of each device, the distance between each device and the
resistance of the cable per metre. To estimate the worst-case scenario simply take the maximum cable run and
calculate the voltage-drop as if all devices were at the end of the cable.
Typical current requirements of devices connected to the Advent XT2 network are given below:
24V Network Devices
Standby
Intercom Unit
2mA
Ceiling Pullcord with 24V LED
-
Door Entry Telephone
2mA
Manager Callpoint
2mA
Lift Speech Unit
2mA
Network Receiver
6mA
Door Entry Panel
30mA
EXAMPLE
The estimated voltage-drop on an installation with 40 intercoms, 1 Manager callpoint, 1 lift speech unit and 3 network
receivers on 400 metres of cable would be;
(40 x 2mA) + (2 x 2mA) + (3 x 6mA) = total current 102 mA (0.102A) on 24V line
400 metres of CW1308 cable = 40 (10 per 100 metres)
using V = I x R: 0.102A x 40 = 4.08V drop on 24V line (leaving approx. 20V)
Devices on the 24V supply will work down to approx. 16V therefore the above drop is acceptable.
REDUCING VOLTAGE DROP
There are several means of reducing the voltage-drop; site conditions will dictate which is used;
1. The best solution is to split the network into several short spurs rather than one long run. This has the advantage of
a smaller voltage-drop per cable run and simplified fault finding.
2. On large installations install a 1.0mm power pair or a CW1308 with additional spare pairs to allow “doubling-up” on
power & 0V conductors. Increasing the cable cross section area will reduce its resistance therefore reducing the
amount of voltage-drop.
3. Looping back the power & 0V conductors from the last intercom to the controller will form a ring circuit which will
effectively halve the resistance.
4. An auxiliary power supply can be connected to the site wiring at a suitable point to boost the supply midway along
the cable run. The disadvantage of this being future Service Engineers may not be aware of PSU’s presence and the
network will remain powered when the controller is switched off.
IMPORTANT: Max current rating per CW1308 0.5mm core is 0.25A, therefore 1 pair = 0.5A
THE RESISTANCE OF CW1308 CABLE IS
APPROX 100 PER 1000 METRES
Doc No. FM0804 issue 15 Page 14
10. NETWORK TERMINATION BOARD
The Advent XT2 termination board provides the interface between the main CPU board and the site wiring network.
LINK SETTINGS
Links LK1 & LK2 will normally be fitted in position A so the RS232 Port can be used to monitor the RS485 Network
data. Move the links to position B to monitor the 2nd RS485 Network data. Links LK3 & LK4 are not fitted.
RS232 PORT
The 9 pin “D” RS232 Port is used to connect a PC to monitor the XT2 RS485 Network data (19200 baud, 8 data bits, 1
stop bit, no parity). The link settings LK1 & LK2 must be changed to position B to monitor the 2nd RS485 Network data.

the current operating mode. If a PA Amplifier (ZXT901) is fitted, then at the same time a fire tone will start to sound
through all intercoms*. The fire tone will continue until input 4 is removed, i.e. when the buildings Fire Alarm Panel is
reset. *Note: if a PA Amplifier is fitted the fire tone can be disabled in the Onsite & General Set-up programming - see
the Advent XT2 Programming Manual (Doc No FM0815).

FERRITE CORE
Each leg of network wiring should be looped through a ferrite core before being
connected to the Termination board.
This will suppress any voltage transients induced on the Network wiring and
greatly reduce the likelihood of damage to the main CPU board.
Four ferrite cores are provided in the kit of parts with the Advent XT2 controller,
for additional ferrite cores order Tynetec P/No. T06050.

Other cable networks from previous systems can be used provided there are a minimum of 5 x 0.5mm twisted pairs maintained throughout the site.
Check the overall cable resistance from one end to another, check there is no resistance between cores and check the cables are voltage free.
NETWORK CABLE LIMITATIONS
The maximum network cable length is 1200 metres - beyond this it is likely you will experience problems relating to
voltage-drop, low audio levels and corrupt data. Voltage-drop can be overcome by increasing cable conductor size and
adding additional PSU’s. Low audio levels can only be overcome by increasing cable conductor size. Corrupt data can
be caused by cable length and/or too many devices on the network, a Network Data Repeater (P/No. ZXT340) is
available for extreme cases.
Doc No. FM0804 issue 15 Page 18
12. PA AMPLIFIER INSTALLATION
The Advent XT2 PA amplifier (P/No. ZXT901) allows the onsite manager to broadcast Public Address announcements
through all intercoms simultaneously. It can also be used to supplement the building’s Fire Alarm system by sounding
a fire alarm tone through all intercoms. One PA amplifier can drive 80 intercoms, for larger systems a second ZXT901
will be required and the site Audio 2 SP1 & SP2 wiring must be on a separate leg and terminated in SP3 & SP4 on the
Termination Board. Contact Tynetec’s customer support for advice on larger installations.
The PA amplifier lid should only be removed during installation and service it must be screwed
shut at all other times to prevent the risk of electric shock.
Never leave a live PA amplifier unattended with the lid removed.
INSTALLATION
The PA Amplifier is housed in a steel enclosure 200x500x100 mm (HxWxD) and should be wall mounted below the
Advent XT2 controller. Fix the chassis to the wall using the 3 keyholes marked “A” below;

MAINS SUPPLY
The 240V AC mains supply should be taken from a local fused spur.
Connect the PA Amplifier to the fused spur using 0.5mm 3-core flex (Type 2183Y) and the IEC socket provided. Secure
the flex to the chassis using a cable tie to prevent the mains lead being inadvertently unplugged. The spur should be
fitted with a 5A fuse.
TERMINATION
3 cables are provided for connection to the Advent XT2 controller’s termination board - see table below for
connections and colour codes. Also see Drg. No. ZXT900 sheet 2.

2nd PA AMPLIFIER TERMINATION
On installations with more than 80 intercoms a second ZXT901 PA Amplifier is required. The EN/AUD/0V and data
RS485+/RS485- are simply connected in parallel with the first PA Amplifier, however the Transformer output of the
second PA Amplifier must be connected to the Termination Board PA AMP 2 INA/PA AMP 2 INB terminals.
IMPORTANT: when 2 PA Amplifiers are fitted the site wiring AUDIO 2 SP1/SP2 must be split into 2 legs. Ideally the
number of intercoms on each leg should be shared 50/50, i.e. if there’s 120 intercoms in total connect 60 on each leg
rather than 80 on one leg and 40 on the other. The 2nd leg must have the AUDIO 2 SP1/SP2 pair connected to the
Termination Board SP3/SP4 terminals instead. See Tynetec Drg. No. WD0298.
SMPSU & DC-DC MODULES
The 15V/105W switch mode power supply unit (P/No. W00586) is factory set to 13.75V DC output to supply the two
24V DC-DC converters and the PA amplifier board. This voltage also charges the 12V standby battery. The SMPSU has
solid state overload protection and contains no user serviceable parts.
The two 24V/50W DC-DC converter modules (P/No. W00590) are factory wired to provide +/- 24V DC supply for the
PA amplifier board. The DC-DC converters have solid state overload protection and contain no user serviceable parts.
VR1 & VR2 VOLUME ADJUSTMENT
Set the volume level of the fire alarm tone using VR1.
Set the volume level of the all call speech using VR2.
PROGRAMMING
The All Call and Fire Tone options must be enabled in the Onsite & General Setup programming - see the Advent XT2
Programming Manual (Doc No FM0815).

13. EXTERNAL BATTERY BOX INSTALLATION
The Advent XT2 external battery box (P/No. ZXT902) extends the system standby battery operating time from 12 to 24
hours*. This additional battery box is not mandatory, but it is recommended to fully comply with BS EN 50134-3:2012.
*24 hours battery standby is based on 5 calls per hour on a typical Advent XT2 system with 40 intercoms, 1 door entry
panel and 3 NTR’s. The IP-DECT system is supported by a UPS, if this fails all onsite calls are reported to the fixed desk
telephone.
INSTALLATION
The external battery box is housed in a steel
enclosure 230 x 185 x 80 mm (HxWxD).
This should be wall mounted as close as possible
to the Advent XT2 controller.
Check the battery leads can be routed through
the knockouts and trunking to the XT2 controller
before fixing to the wall.
DO NOT extend the battery leads.
Fix the chassis to the wall using the 3 holes
marked “Ashown here;
TERMINATION
The external battery box leads are simply connected in parallel with the existing standby batteries in the Advent XT2
controller using the 2 way tab to receptacle crimp adapter terminals provided.
