This guide provides the instruction to install the large volume splitless (LVSL) and Merlin Microseal valve
adapter on the SSL injector of your TRACE GC Ultra with TriPlus autosampler.
Overview The adapter can be used wherever it is necessary to reduce the temperature of the septum. This can be the case of
Large Volume splitless or to allow the use of the Merlin Microseal valve with its suitable septum cap.
Large Volume splitless and Merlin valve adapter is shown in Figure 1.

Installing the
Adapter
Before installing the adapter, the SSL injector should be prepared for a septum replacement. To perform this
operation refer to the TRACE GC Ultra Maintenance and Troubleshooting Manual.

CAUTION AI 3000/AS 3000 II autosampler can be used with this adapter only when septum is
installed.

To install the Large Volume splitless and Merlin Microseal valve adapter on the SSL injector
Proceed as follows.
1. Remove the top parts of the SSL injector. See Figure 2.

a. Unscrew the septum cap.
b. Remove the septum holder with the septum, then the septum support.
c. Check to ensure that pieces of the septum are not stuck to the port.
2. Mount the adapter.
a. Insert the o-ring into the bottom of the septum holder, then place it onto the inlet port of the SSL
injector.
b. Screw on and tighten the ring nut up to the stop.
c. Place the septum with center guide into the rim of the body cup.
d. Screw and tighten the septum cap to finger tight. Do not overtighten the septum cap otherwise you
could damage the septum and affect the performance.

Before starting with the injections, test if the septum cap is too tight after heating. If so, reduce the
pressure unscrewing it slightly.
In case the tighten is strong, unscrew the septum cap by using a 20 mm wrench and keeping firmed the
ring nut with a 24 mm wrench.
This setup can be used with a TriPlus AS defining the suitable injection depth between 35 mm to 70
mm.
3. Set the flow and the column head pressure to operating conditions.
4. Check for leaks.

The Merlin Microseal valve can be used instead of the septum for manual injection or TriPlus autosampler using
the suitable needle gauge. See Figure 3.

To install the Microseal valve instead of the septum, proceed as follow:
1. Place the Microseal valve in the septum cooler body cup.
2. Push down gently to seat the Microseal valve onto the rim of the body cup.
3. Screw the Microseal valve cap completely. Microseal valve overtightening and sealing flange stressing is not
mechanically allowed.

Note The AI 3000/AS 3000 II autosampler requires the use of the centering plate for PTV to center the
sampling unit on the adapter.
CAUTION Merlin Microseal Valve cannot be used with the AI 3000/AS 3000 II autosampler.
