The networking and access to the DL/PDL requires specific IP address and protocol

information. No response or no results may result not from malfunctions of the system but due

to communication problems.

System Handling

Do not use harsh or abrasive detergents for the cleaning of the DL/PDL. The connectors have

always to keep clean from dust and dirt.

4 Introduction

The Monitoring and Control System is an end to end solution for the rf-system in the broadcast

towers. With the Monitoring and Control System the operator can detect and prevent

malfunctions, increase the safety and manage third party situation (outsourcing, colocation):

With the Monitoring system, the broadcast tower operator is able to:

 do preventive maintenance and prevent from partial/total system failures

 minimize SLA violation caused by “slow death” effects (like water in the system,

mechanical abrasion)

 safe time and cost for failure detection because of direct failure localisation

 safe time and costs to repair because the correct spare material is on site

 safe fixed costs because of central dispatching and optimized maintenance team

assignment

 Increase the security of broadcast towers (prevent from fire and successive failure

damage)

 Offer a monitoring service to partner, operators or broadcasters

 Prove SLA compliance

 Manage third party or outsourced services by detecting power level and measure return

loss / VSWR

 Increase the safety of the RF-system by controlling the transmitters with

4.1 Purpose of the Document

This user manual helps the operator to install and configure the Data Logger and Tower Meter

as part of the commissioning activity, look up the monitoring results (Dashboard and trend

curves) and manage the alarms.

The Data Logger/Tower Meter (DL/PDL) connects to the outdoor Junction Box (JB 3.x) with a

hybrid cable. The hybrid connector Han-Brid connects to the hybrid cable, see chapter 8. The

indoor Junction Box (JB 4.x) is connected with a standard Sub-D 9 pole cable. Each JB can be

operated in a daisy chain mode.

Before starting any installation actions, we ask the user to read carefully the safety instructions

in chapter 6. These instructions need to be strictly followed.

4.2 Scope

This manual describes the installation of the Data Logger (DL) and Tower Meter (PDL) at the

transmitter location in the Infrastructure room of the tower facility.

After the installation of the Sensor or RF-/Temp. -Detectors and Junction Box and the related

cabling in the tower, the DL/PDL is put into operation.

This manual explains the system configuration, alarm management and dashboard functionality

(incl. trend curves).

Out of scope of this manual is the set up and going life of the Analytics-SW or the detailed

instruction of the installation procedures for Sensors, Junction boxes and the cables.

4.3 General Information

 The Monitoring System products are only delivered after they passed successfully a

functional test.

 DAC System supplies all material required for a complete functional system: products,

cables and hybrid connectors; except the Internet connection and Ethernet cable from

the DL/PDL to the Ethernet switch.

 In case the Monitoring System is installed in conjunction with a tower enhancement (new

frequencies), the system can be preinstalled, tested and commissioned at the antenna

supplier site.

 Retrofit applications: In case of retrofit, the installation time is in average 1h/sensor for

the complete system (incl. cabling, installation of JB and DL/PDL).

 In case of tower enhancements, the sensors are already mounted at the antennas or the

power splitter and shipped together.

 The configuration of the system can be preconfigured in the DL/PDL before the system

is shipped.

 The DL/PDL requires an Ethernet/IP connection to connect either to the DL/PDL directly

or for the communication with the Analytics-SW. If no Ethernet connection is available a

mobile data connection via GSM can be used. The GSM module can be ordered

optionally. Before the installation the Ethernet connection should be organized within the

broadcast operator network or a SIM card has to be ordered in time.

 The Analytics-SW is a one-time installation for the whole network. The installation has to

be prepared with the IT department of the broadcast operator, to clarify question

concerning the installations, firewalls, etc.

4.4 Quality Control

The quality control concept of DAC System has 4 levels:

1. General quality control systems by suppliers of the components

2. Supplier production quality control procedure

3. Supplier product testing

4. DAC System functional test on PO (purchase order)

 The DAC System products are produced in Switzerland and Italy by companies with

quality certificates acc. to the ISO standard.

 Each product is tested during the manufacturing process.

 The DAC System performs a functional test before delivery the total system.

With these measures, DAC System warrants a very high-quality standard and total quality

control.

5 Overview of DAC Monitoring and Control System

The Monitoring and Control System consists of the following products:

A monitoring Sensor is mounted at the input of each antenna

and power splitter/divider. A RF-detector is mounted on

existing directional couplers with N-/SMA-connector. From the

JB The sensors/RF-/Temp.-detectors are connected with a jumper

cable to the JB; the JB is available in different versions. The

JB can work in a daisy chain mode, max 16 JB can be

connected to one DL/PDL. The JB connects with a hybrid

cable (plastic coated fibre/copper for the outdoor version JB

3.x) or directly with electrical RS485 interface to the DL/PDL

4.x (daisy chain works also for the indoor version).

3 Data Logger

DL/PDL The DL/PDL has one Hybrid connector and one electrical RS

485 interface, to connect with the JBs. The PDL has on top

local RF-interfaces and is available in various versions. The

DL/PDL is recording all measurement results. Also the DL/PDL

has a web server built in. With a standard browser the

Monitoring System is configured, the alarms and the measured

values/trend curves are displayed. The DL/PDL connects to

the Ethernet and the Analytics

through the mobile data network.

4 The

Analytics-SW

Is a web based management SW to supervise a network of

towers and installed DL/PDL. It allows the management of the

network, display alarms, create reports and statistic and keeps

an inventory of all Monitoring System products in the network

and most importantly analyse centrally all monitoring data.

DAC System SMART Control is a subsystem of the DL/PDL. It

controls amplifiers to increase the safety of the RF-installation.

SMART Control is fast, reliable and operates with multiple

decision criteria. Criteria are alarms detected on threshold of

available monitoring points connected to the System.

Naming of the Monitoring System Products

The following graphic provides the name of the different components of the Monitoring System.

These names are used in the user manual.

6 Safety Instructions

For the safe installation of the Monitoring System the following rules needs to be strictly

followed:

 Switch of the broadcast service of the tower. Before starting the installation, make sure

that all transmitters for this tower are turned off. Any transmission power in the rf-system

might endanger the life of the personnel installing the system.

 Only well-trained and authorised personnel may install the Monitoring Systems.

 During the installation, the Monitoring System facilitated guides has to be followed. If

situation occur which are not described and covered by the user manual, DAC System

has to be contacted immediately before any further actions are taken.

 For the proper installation the required special tools must be used.

 Before any installation starts it should be make sure that a first aid kit is on site available

and the emergency telephone number is known to the onsite personnel.

 Use the Monitoring System products and components only for the described purpose

and within the parameters specified in the data sheets.

8 Installation of the Data Logger / Tower Meter

8.1 Prerequisites

That a successful installation of the DL/PDL is possible, the following conditions need to be

fulfilled:

 2HU space for the DL and 3 HU for PDL in a 19” rack is available

 2 AC power supply sockets in the 19” rack available

 A prepared Ethernet port at the local Ethernet switch

 An Ethernet cable with the right length switch – DL/PDL

 Cable connection from the JB to the DL/PDL (hybrid or electr. RS 485

 Han-Brid connector mounted and the hybrid cable coming from the JB3.x

 In case a mobile data connection is required, the corresponding option needs to be

ordered

 In case of mobile data connection, a valid SIM card for mobile data transfer

 In case a local WLAN/Wi-Fi connection is required, the corresponding option needs to

be ordered

Commissioning: for the commissioning of the system the sensor and the JB needs to be

installed first. The fibre input plugs are protected with studs. They have to be removed before

the hybrid cable connection is possible.

Note: The PDL can be installed without any Junction Boxes and used directly with the

integrated interfaces.

8.2 Pre-installation Tasks

Before the installation of the DL/PDL can start, the following tasks needs to be conducted:

 Order/prepare a local Ethernet connection at the tower site in the amplifier room.

 Organize the required IP protocol information (address, network mask, etc.)

 In case of a mobile data connection a valid SIM card acc. to the operator choice has to

be organized and related login information.

 A connection from the local Intranet of the operator to the GSM mobile data network

(firewall) needs to be organized.

8.3 Installation of the 19” subrack

The 1/2HU, 19” subrack is installed in any standard 19” rack. With the 4 enclosed screws the

front is directly screwed to the mounting bar of the rack.

For heat circulation, it is recommended to leave ½ HU space below and above the DL/PDL

subrack.

On the back side of the DL/PDL there are two IEC plugs for the redundant AC powering

available:

 One AC cable is connected to the standard local AC power connection

 One AC cable should be connected to the USP (Uninterruptible Power Supply) if

available

If no USP is available both power supplies are connected to the local AC power available. This

will prevent the Monitoring system of a malfunction in case of failure of the internal power

supply.

All Junction Boxes and Sensors are remotely powered with 48V DC.

8.4 Data Logger and Tower Meter interfaces

 To commission the Monitoring System the DL/PDL is installed acc. to chapter 0.

 After the DL/PDL is powered the hybrid connector or RS 485 is inserted.

 On the front of the DL/PDL is the green LED OPR/Power on: DL/PDL is powered (takes

2 minutes after power is connected to start the OS and initialize the SW system).

 The yellow LED F1/Poll is blinking: the communication with the JB is working.

Please follow now the following steps to configure the Monitoring System on site.

In case the system is not responding but the green LED is on (system powered), it is

recommended to unplug all power supplies/switch-off the PDL to restart the system. The

initial set-up time is around 2 minutes (starting the operating system and the application).

8.6 GSM-Module

The GSM-module mini – PCI express card always needs to be installed in the middle position of

the CPU board. The DL/PDL can be either used with the LAN port or the GSM connection.

Both connections in parallel are not possible.

The WLAN/Wi-Fi - module mini – PCI express card is installed in the right position of the CPU

board. The module works in parallel with a mobile data or LAN connection.

9 Configuration of the Monitoring and Control System

 In case, you change and save a configuration in the Web browser use F5 to refresh.

Status information, alarms, dashboard, etc. After refresh the application, jumps back to

the Dashboard.

 If you add information always use the SAVE button to store the information.

9.1 Get started

 The Laptop or Desktop is connected to the “Local” Ethernet port

 Start your internet explorer

 Enter the following IP address to in the URL field: 192.168.1.1

 Enter your password, default password:

 Username: admin

 Password: admin

 Username: user

 Password: user

The DL/PDL supports 2 user profiles:

 The ADMIN profile: includes all function including configuration and password change

 The USER profile: this profile allows only to look at the data, trend curves, alarms and

can clear alarms

Security indication

Change the default ADMIN and USER password after the first login immediately.

Configure new passwords for the USERs.

Be aware that in case of the loss of the ADMIN password the system is not accessible

anymore.
