Introduction

GENERAL

This document is a Command Line Interface (CLI) and application guide for the MX408e. This

document provides application examples and detailed information about all commands that

are available through the MX408e.

DESCRIPTION

Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2 illustrates the front and rear panels of the MX408e.

The MX408e transports DS1 circuits over Ethernet, allowing TDM delivery over Ethernet

networks. DS1 or fractional DS1 curcuits are transported using Pseudowire emulation Edge-

to-Edge (PWE3), which is a tunneling protocol. The MX408e supports the following protocols:

• Structure-Agnostic TDM over Packet (SAToP). DS1 circuits are transported end-to-end.

SAToP protocol is standards-based per RFC4553.

• Structure-Aware TDM Circuit Emulation Service over Packet Switched Network

(CESoPSN). NxDS0 circuits are transported as defined in the IETF draft standard for

CESoPSN (draft-ietf-pwe3-cesopsn-07).

The MX408e recovers DS1 timing using the following methods:

• Differential Timing Recovery uses a common reference clock at both ends. The DS1 timing

is reconstructed using RTP timestamps from the common reference.

• Adaptive Timing Recovery uses a reference clock at one end and re-creates a reference clock

at the other end using timing packets. RTP timestamps are then used to reconstruct the

DS1 timing as in the Differential Timing mode.

FEATURES

The major features of the MX408e are as follows:

• 19- rack mounting, one rack unit high

• Front panel data connections

• Eight RJ48 short-haul, intrabuilding DSX-1 connections

• Ethernet switch with four RJ45 Ethernet client ports

• One RJ45 network Ethernet port

• One SFP socket for network 1000Base-X interface

• RS-232 DB-9 Craft interface for access to provisioning, status and test information via a

Command Line Interface (CLI)

• Management via Telnet over Ethernet connections or VT100 through local RS232 DB-9

Craft port

• Wire-wrap pins for external alarm inputs

• Two independent power feeds with separate returns

• Accepts redundant ±60 to ±20 VDC inputs

• End-to-end extension of up to eight T1s over Ethernet

• Manual and remote initiated loopback modes

ACCESSING THE COMMAND LINE INTERFACE

Access the management and provisioning features for the MX408e by CLI using a standard

RS-232 serial cable to connect to the DB-9 craft port located on the unit. Also, access the CLI

through Telnet over Ethernet connections.

To establish CLI communication with the MX408e through the craft port, perform the

following steps:

1. Connect to the craft interface using a VT100 terminal or PC with VT100 emulation soft-

ware configured with the following parameters:

•Any baud rate

• 8 data bits

• No parity

•1 stop bit

• No flow control

2. Once connected, press ENTER several times to access the CLI.

The MX408e can also be accessed by Telnet through an Ethernet interface. The defaults for

the 10/100 port (Ethernet) are as follows:

• IP Address: 192.168.100.1

• Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

• Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Security Login

The MX408e is protected by a username and password. The default username is “ADMIN”,

and the default password is “PASSWORD.” Configure the usernames and passwords in the

Global Configuration mode.

Application Guidelines

INTRODUCTION

The MX408e can operate in a variety of applications with other MX408e units, as well as with

the OPTI-6100. This section describes some of the more common applications as follows:

BOOKEND MX408E SYSTEMS - BASIC T1 TRANSPORT

This application illustrates transport of two DS1s over Ethernet using two MX408e units

which are on the same network (there is only Layer 2 switching in the network between them).

Both MX408e units receive network timing from the same clock source, which is input into a

DSX-1 port on each MX408e. The payload DS1 timing is transported thru the network using

differential mode timing recovery. RTP timestamps are sent inside the pseudowire packets and

are used by the other MX408e to reconstruct the original DS1 timing.

Setup of MX408e #1:

Beginning with the logon prompt, set all settings to factory default and reset the unit for the

defaults to take effect. The factory default sets all 8 pseudowires for SAToP mode and defines

the UDP ports associated with each pseudowire. Also, the default configuration cross-

connects each pseudowire to a DS1 port.

and respond to the “You are about to reboot the system” question with yes (“y”).

After the unit resets, log on and set the pseudowire interface clock to be sourced from a clock

DS1 AND ETHERNET TRANSPORT OVER A PROVIDER NETWORK

This application example illustrates T1 and Ethernet transport over a provider network, using

the Adtran OPTI 6100 as a gateway. The MX408e uses two different networks to separate the

DS1 traffic from the customer Ethernet traffic. Two DS1s are transported across the provider

Ethernet switch sends the Pseudowire traffic towards the Pseudowire Emulation Module

(PWE3M) in the OPTI 6100, and the customer Ethernet traffic towards the Internetwork.

The OPTI shelf contains three modules related to the data path for the DS1s: a DS1 Tributary

Module (DS1VME); an Optical Multiplexer Module (OMM), and a PWE3M. The PWE3M

converts the pseudowires into VT1.5 streams inside the OPTI shelf. The OMM unit in the OPTI

shelf is used to cross-connect these VT1.5 streams to the DS1VME unit, where the data

streams emerge on DS1 interfaces.

DS1 timing is transported thru the network using differential mode timing recovery. In this

mode, the BITS reference clock timing is sent from the PWE3M to the MX408e in timing

packets. For each pseudowire, RTP timestamps are sent inside the pseudowire packets and

used to reconstruct the DS1 timing at the MX408e.
