1 Safety instructions
Á Do not use the Reporter 8LED in water!
Á Ensure that during the operation of the light that enough
clearance is maintained around the fixture that the heat
it generates can dissipate.
Á The light housing may not be covered with any material,
as this causes a reduction in the cooling, which will
cause a reduction of the LED life.
Á Handle with care! Do not dispose of fixture in the trash!
Note: An input voltage higher than 33 V will destroy the
electronics inside the light fixture!
2 Properties
Á The Sachtler Reporter 8LED is designed for use as on-
board camera light.
Á The LED light fixture can be operated on low voltage
ranging from 6 VDC until 24 VDC. The integrated electronic
assembly drives the LED with the necessary current.
Á The standard power cable has a 2 pin Anton/Bauer Power
tap connector. There are other optional adapter cables
available to make it usable with other power sources (see
Accessories, chapter 7).
Á Due to its small and very robust construction, the Reporter
8LED can also be used outdoors in harsh environments.
The housing is water resistant, and can be used in wet
conditions and spraying water (IP 44).

Reporter 8LEDManual
Á The flexible double hinge allows a wide range of tilt angles.
The light fixture can be used in every possible orientation.
Á It is very easy to open the barndoor module for changing
the optical system of the LED module.
Á Optional accessories open up a wide range of applications
besides the use as on-board camera light. The Reporter
8LED can be turned into a very flexible on-location light.
Á As the housing of the R8LED only warms up to approx
50°C (120°F), the fixture can be touched soon after use,
and can immediately be stored.

3 Operation
3.1 Unpacking
The cardboard box contains the light fixture and a manual.
The R8LED is delivered including a standard optic (flood)
and daylight LED.
3.2 Mounting on the camera
Attach the Reporter 8LED to the camera, either with the
1/4” screw or with mounting shoe, or use accessories for
mounting the fixture to any other desired location (see
chapter 7, Accessories).
Mounting shoe
The double hinge base
allows flexible positioning
of the light fixture. With the
variable height adjustment,
the light can be moved
over a wide range, allowing
hard shadows to be avoi-
ded.

3.3 Starting the Reporter 8LED
Connect the Anton/Bauer Power Tap
connector to an appropriate power source
(nominal voltage of 6 VDC to 24 VDC).
3.4 Adapter
For alternative use of power sources see adapters in chap-
ter 7, “Accessories”.
3.5 ON/OFF switching of the Reporter
8LED
Switch the R8LED on by pushing the
ON/OFF switch on the backside of the
housing.
3.6 Indication of failures
A red indicator LED at the backside of the housing,
beneath the ON/OFF switch, indicates a number of diffe-
rent failures.
In case of failure, the red LED indicator can be seen blin-
king through the transparent cover of the switch.
Failure conditions:
Indication of wrong wiring:
The red indicator LED is blinking and the fixture doesn’t
react to the “ON/OFF” switch.
Indication of under- or over-voltage:
The red indicator LED is blinking only when “ON/OFF”
switch is set to “ON” and the input voltage falls under
6 VDC (to 3.5 VDC) or exceeds 28 VDC (to 33 VDC).
Caution: A safe operation is only warranted between
6VDC and 28 VDC. Exeeding 33 VDC of input voltage
will destroy the electronics inside the Reporter 8LED
light fixture.

4 Changing the Optical System
An alternative medium-optic can be used (see chapter 7,
Accessories, R8LED Optic Set).
Changing the Lens:
Disconnect fixture from the power source.
Remove the barndoor module. The locking pin on the bottom
of the fixture must be pulled back with the use of the push
button.
The LED barndoor module can be turned until it detaches.

Remove Optic Module:
The optic module is a loose insert and will fall out if the hou-
sing is tipped downwards.
Attach new Optic Module:
Take care that the four pins on the backside of the optic
module lay in the cut-outs of the LED module.
Mount LED-Front module (barn door module):
Insert the four nibs on the LED-Front-
Module into the notches at the LED-Base-
Module (45° position).
Press the barn-door module firmly against
the LED-Base-Module and turn it until it
snaps in.

5 Changing the LED module
5.1 LED-Module Disassembly
Disconnect from Power Source.
Remove the LED-Front-Module:
Follow steps to exchange optic module, chapter 4
LED-Module disassembly:
5.2 LED-Module Assembly
Insert LED-Module:
Take care that both contact pins of the light fixture extend
into the center of the holes in the LED-module.
Dismount the 4 cross recessed
screws (PH) which are holding the
LED module. The LED module
can be changed now. When reas-
sembling the LED module, screws
must be tightened carefully to
avoid breaking the LED module.

LED-Module assembly:
We recommend setting the four recessed head screws
(Phillips) in following order and to screw them in only
slightly:
1. Upper recessed head screw (1)
2. Lower recessed head screw (2)
3. Sideways recessed head screws (3 & 4)
Only tighten them after having fixed all four screws. Do
not tighten too firmly.
Reassemble optical system and barn door module as
described in chapter 4.
5.3 Note LED module:
The LED module is an opto-electronic component.
Please keep in mind:
Á Store in a dry, electrostatic case
Á do not clean with a wet towel
Á only use antistatic brushed or cloths
Á keep free of grease

6 Working with the LED fixture
6.1 Adjust 4-leaf barndoor:
By pushing the push-button on the bottom of the fixture,
the LED front-module is released. Press the frame of the
barndoor tight against the fixture. Then the barndoor can
be moved from horizontal to vertical position and vice
versa.
6.2 Gel filter holder:
The retaining clips on both sides of the larger barn doors
enable the use of gel filters. We
recommend cutting the gel into
rectangles of 12 x 7 cm (7” x 2,8 “)
in order to achieve perfect hold and
function.
Too strong diffusion or ND gel fil-
ters can reduce the light output sig-
nificantly.

6.3 Double hinge:
The double hinge allows variable height positioning of the
fixture. In folded position the fixture is easy to transport,
either on the camera or in a bag.
The double hinge is self-locking, and remains in its desired
position.
Note: If the self-locking function of the double hinge
weakens, the 4 screws can be retightened.
