Step 2
While connected, you can view the satellite information if the
output process is successful. The bar chart shows the signal level
and the serial numbers of the related satellites. You can press
“Cold Start”, “Warm Start” and “Hot Start” to reacquire the signals
if necessary.

2. How to configure the output message
In the page of “Setting”, you can select the NMEA messages and the respective
periods, and then press “Set” to change the original setting. You can
also press “Set Default” to go back to the original setting.
Reset Mode Description
Hot Start
Restart by using the values stored in the internal memory of
the GPS receiver.
Warm Start Clear all initialization data in the GPS receiver and
subsequently reloads the data the is currently displayed in
the same initialize position and time.
Cold Start Clear all data that is currently stored in the internal memory
of the GPS receiver including position, almanac, ephemeris,
time and clock drift.

NMEA Configuration
Table 2-1 lists NMEA messages provided in sections.
Option Description
GGA Time, Position, and fix type data.
GLL Latitude, longitude, UTC time of position fix and status.
GSA GPS receiver operating mode, satellites used in the position
solution, and DOP values.
GSV The number of GPS satellites in view satellite ID numbers,
elevation, azimuth, and SNR values.
RMC Time, date, position, course and speed data.
VTG Course and speed information relative to the ground.
Period
Value between 1 and 255.
The input value means the interval of each message, and the
unit is second.
Baud Rate
Generally, 9600 for NMEA Protocol.
For USB interface, Baud rate is irrelevant.(You can receive
the data with any baud rate)
For UART interface, please refer to Leadtek NMEA Protocol
Manual for MTK.

3. How to change the settings by making commands
Please be noted that the GPS LED status on the F1 board will remain the
same as what it is when you make PMTK commands. For example, if the light
is on when you are making commands, it will remain on until your next
command.
NMEA Input Message
Table 3-1 shows the transport message parameters and here below is the
example to make a command. After you key in the command and press “Send”,
the command will promptly take effect.
Option Description
NMEA Command
NMEA input messages allow you to control the Evaluation unit
in NMEA protocol mode. The Evaluation unit may input NMEA mode
by sending the MTK protocol message.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting
Serial Port troubleshooting
Serial Port troubleshooting – the most common problem encountered
when having problems with any software of this type is an error in
the configuration of the serial port. The NMEA 0183 standard for GPS
receivers baud rate of 9600, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.
Make sure that the NMEA strings being received and displayed in the
Development Data window shown as above are readable. If the data is
not readable, most likely an error in your baud rate selection. Verify
the baud rate selection in the Data Source Settings.
<Note>
Select data baud rate as 9600 to ensure that data overrun does not occur.

Chapter 5 Appendix A
Glossary
Azimuth The Horizontal angle of the observer’s bearing in surveying,
measured clockwise from a referent direction, as from north, or
from a referent celestial body, usually Polaris.
C/NO Carrier-to-Noise density ratio
DOP Dilution of Precision
Elevation The height of GPS antenna above the reference ellipsoid. The
elevation angle of GPS satellite above the horizontal horizon or
user defined mask.
PRN Pseudorandom Noise Number. The identity of the GPS satellites as
determined by a GPS receiver. Since all GPS satellites must transmit
on the same frequency, they are distinguished by their pseudorandom
noise codes.
RTCM Radio Technical Commission of Maritime Services. Also commonly
used as a reference o the standard format that DGPS corrections
data is distribute in RTCM recommended standard for differential
Navstar GPS service. SiRF star receiver supports that latest
version 2.1 of this standard.
SA Selective Availability. The method used by the DOD to control access
to the full accuracy achievable with the C/A code.
SNR Signal-to-Noise Ratio, often expressed in decibels.
SV Satellite vehicle.
UTC Universal Time Coordinated. This time system uses the second
defined true angular rotation of the Earth measured as if the Earth
rotaed about its Conventional terrestrial Pole. However, UTC is
adjusted only in increments of on second. The time zone of UTC
is that of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
