What is in this guide
This guide describes how to configure and monitor the Stinger 48-port ADSL Annex C line
interface module (LIM) and includes configuration examples and module specifications. This
guide also describes how to configure LIM redundancy.

To make use of the procedures and sample configurations in this guide, you should have a
general knowledge of Stinger products and a working knowledge of the command-line
interface (CLI). You should understand the fundamental concepts of digital subscriber line
(DSL) technology and be familiar with the relationship between DSL interfaces and associated
configuration profiles.

type of module, an individual guide describes the module's features and provides
instructions for configuring the module and verifying its status.

to configure Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) operations on a Stinger unit. The

Configuring an ADSL 48-Port Annex C
Line Interface Module (LIM)
The Stinger ADSL 48-port Annex C Line Interface Module (LIM) provides 48 asymmetric
digital subscriber line (ADSL) interfaces that support high-speed, asymmetric data transfer.
The module supports the ITU G.992.1, G.992.2, G.994.1, and G.997.1 protocols.
The ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM, product code STGR-LIM-AC-48, supports Annex C in the
Stinger LS chassis only.
Note: The ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM is designed to be used in a Stinger unit that is
equipped with the model A-J control module (STGR-CM-A-J). The A-J control module
supplies the 400Hz clock required by Annex C ADSL. The model A-J control module operates
only with the Stinger LS unit, model STGRLS-1-J or STGRLS-2-J.
Installing an ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM
The ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM is installed in a Stinger unit in the same manner as any other
LIM. See the Getting Started Guide for your unit for details. After installation, configure the
module following the instructions in this document.

Interpreting ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM status lights
Several status lights on the front panel of the ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM indicate the status
of the module and its ports. Figure 1-1 shows the front panel and status lights of the ADSL
Annex C LIM.

All status lights illuminate briefly upon startup or restart, then remain dark until the module
passes its power-on self test (POST). When the module passes the POST and becomes
operational, the ACTIVE light illuminates. It is the only light that is on during normal
operation.
Table 1-1 explains the ADSL 48-port Annex C LIM status lights.
Configuring ADSL Annex C interfaces
The ADSL Annex C module supplies 48 ADSL discrete multitone (ADSL-DMT) interfaces
per LIM. A Stinger unit creates an Al-Dmt profile for each ADSL-DMT interface in the
system. For example, for an ADSL 48-port LIM installed in slot 1, the system creates the
following profiles:

Light Color Indication
STBY Orange The module is a designated spare. The control module
switches traffic to the module if one of the other
modules fails.
ACTIVE Green The module or port is fully operational and no errors
have been detected.
FAULT Orange The module failed to pass its POST.
BYPASS Orange The module is in bypass mode. (The module
redundancy feature is activated.)
PORT Green The local and remote ends of the physical line have
achieved frame synchronization, and the local end of
the ATM link has achieved cell delineation.
If the light is not illuminated, the port is inactive.

Overview of AL-DMT profile
Each direction of traffic (upstream and downstream) on an Annex C ADSL line can have a
different minimum and maximum bit rate. The maximum bit rate depends upon the ADSL
mode, bitmap, and latency options that are selected. The bitmap can be either dual bitmap
(DBM) or far-end cross-talk bitmap (FBM). The six combinations in Table 1-2 are supported.
Choose the best combination of ADSL mode, bitmap, latency and data rate to meet the needs
of your customer. Consider the following factors:
Select the ADSL mode based on the customer premises equipment (CPE), data rate and
splitter requirements.
Select the latency based on error correction and stability needs. Fast has minimum latency
but depending on line conditions can be susceptible to increased errors and decreased
stability. Interleave has increased latency but less errors.
Select the bitmap based on data rate, loop length and time-code modulation (TCM)-ISDN
interference factors. DBM is superior for shorter loops but affects TCM-ISDN service.
FBM is superior for loops greater than 2km and has no effect on TCM-ISDN service. Both
DBM and FBM are not affected by TCM-ISDN service.

Following are descriptions of AL-DMT parameters. Its subprofiles are described in the
following sections.
Line-Config subprofile
The Line-Config subprofile contains parameters that apply to the configuration of the ADSL
DMT line. Its parameters are shown below, with default values for activating and setting up the
line. They are described in the following table, except for the Rate-Adaptive mode and power
parameters, which are described separately.

Parameter Description
Name Specifies the name of the interface. The default value is the
interface address in shelf
:slot:port format (for example,
1:2:3), but you can assign a text string of up to 16 characters.
Physical-Address Specifies the physical address of the interface in the Stinger unit.
Enabled Enables the ADSL-DMT interface. An ADSL-DMT line is
disabled until you activate the line in the AL-DMT profile.
Sparing-Mode Enables or disables port redundancy and specifies the mode.
The default,
inactive, disables LIM port redundancy.
The
automatic setting activates automatic backup for the port.
The values of the error threshold parameters specified in the
auto-lim-sparing-config:lim-sparing-config
[slot number]profile are used.
The
manual setting deactivates the LIM port and reestablishes
the connection on the same port of the spare LIM.
Ignore-Lineup Can be set to ignore the status of a line (whether or not the line is
up). When set to
yes, call control establishes the call regardless
of the physical line state.

Parameter Description
Nailed-Group Specifies the nailed-group number for the ADSL-DMT physical
interface. A Connection or RADIUS profile uses this number to
specify the interface.
Because each interface is assigned a unique default number, you
do not need to modify the value of this parameter. If you assign a
new value, it must be a number from 1 through 1024 that is unique
within the system.
VP-Switching-VPI Specifies the virtual path identifier (VPI) to use for virtual path
(VP) switching on the LIM port. The default is 15. All other VPIs
are used for virtual channel (VC) switching.
Line-Code The 48-port LIM automatically defaults to g-dmt, which is
equivalent to
auto-select, and automatically detects G.dmt or
G.lite. The line can be limited to G.lite by setting this parameter to
g-lite. The ansi-dmt setting is not supported for Annex C.
Line-Latency-Down Specifies the latency path to be used for downstream data
transport. Default value is interleave for Annex C. Fast
latency is not supported for G.lite.

Line-Latency-Up Specifies the latency path to be used for upstream data transport.
Default value is
interleave for Annex C. Fast latency is not
supported for G.lite.

Trellis-Encoding The default value for the 48-port Annex C LIM is
yes.
Gain-Default Specifies the default gain value in decibels (16dB or 20dB) for
automatic gain control (AGC) on early Alcatel-based LIMs. This
parameter does not apply to the Annex C LIM.
Upstream-Start-Bin Specifies the starting frequency bin for upstream transmission.
Valid range is 6 through 31 for 48-port Annex C LIMs. The
default value is 6.
Upstream-End-Bin Specifies the ending frequency bin for upstream transmission.
Valid range is 6 through 31 for 48-port Annex C LIMs. The
default value is 31.
Downstream-Start-Bin Specifies the starting frequency bin for downstream transmission.
Valid range is 32 through 255 for 48-port Annex C LIMs. The
default value is 32.
