1 TWRAUDIOSGTLOverview
TheTWRAUDIOSGTLisaperipheralmodulecompatiblewiththeFreescaleTowerSystem(Figure1).
TheTWRAUDIOSGTLperipheralmodulefeaturestheSGTL5000audiocodecandprovidesanaudio
interfacefortheFreescaleTowerSystem.TheSGTL5000isalowpowerstereocodecthatincludesa
headphoneamplifierandisdesignedtoprovideacomprehensiveaudiosolutionforportableproducts
thatrequirelinein,microphonein,lineout,headphoneoutanddigitalI/O.AspartoftheFreescale
TowerSystem,theTWRAUDIOSGTLmodulemaybeusedwithawiderangeofTowerSystem
MCU/MPU,peripheral,sensorandcommunicationmodules.

TheTowerSystemElevatorcardshavefourslotsavailabletoaccommodateTowerSystemprocessor
andperipheralmodules.AnassembledTowerSystemcanonlycontainoneprocessor(MCU/MPU)
module,upto3peripheralmodules,andonesidemountingperipheralmodule.Itisrecommended
thattheTWRAUDIOSGTLperipheralmodulebephysicallylocatedinanElevatorslotadjacenttothat
oftheTowerProcessormodule.Theslot,andtheorderofthemodulesintheslot,isnotimportant,

justtheiradjacentlocation.EnsurethattheTWRAUDIOSGTLperipheralmoduleedgeconnectorwith

2.1 SGTL5000AudioCodec
TheSGTL5000audiocodecconnectstotheTowerSystemprocessoroverI2Cserialcommunicationfor
control,andoverI2Sfordigitalaudiodata.
ThedefaultI2CaddressesfortheSGTL5000audiocodecare:
1) Writeaddress:0x14
2) Readaddress:0x15
ThemaximumI2CclockratefortheSGTL5000is
400kHz.However,duetoTowerSystem
configuration,capacitiveloadingandI2Cpullupresistorvalues,theI2Ccommunicationmayneedto
operateatalowerclockfrequency.JumpersJ1andJ2maybeusedtoadd4.7kOhmresistorstoI2C
SDAandSCLsignallines,toallowhigherclock
frequency.

DigitalaudiodataistransportedbetweentheSGTL5000andtheprocessoroverI2Sdatalines.The
master/slaveconfigurationisdefinedbysoftwaredrivers.Notemasterclockrequirementsofthe
SGTL5000forappropriateconfiguration.
2.2 Si5351AClockGenerator
TheSi5351AtunableclockgeneratorconnectstotheTowerSystemprocessoroverI2Cserial
communicationforcontrol.Itsdefaultoutputfrequencyis24.576MHz.Theoutputfrequencycanbe
changedbyprogrammingitsinternalregistersoverI2Ccommunication.
TheI2CaddressesfortheSi5351Atunableclockgeneratorare:
1. Writeaddress:0xDE
2. Readaddress:0xDF
2.3 HarwareResetConsiderations
TheSGTL5000chiphasinternalpoweronhardwarereset,butnoexternalhardwareresetinput.
Optionally,inadevelopmentenvironment,thepowertotheTWRAUDIOSGTLcanbeforcedtocycle
throughpoweroff/onwhentheTowerSystemprocessormoduleassertsthehardwareresetsignal.
JumperJ3allowsselection
ofthehardwareresetfunctionality:
1) ForJ3inposition12:TowerSystemprocessormodulehardwareresetdoesnotcyclethe TWR
AUDIOSGTLpower.
2) ForJ3inposition23:TowerSystemprocessormodulehardwareresetwillinitiateapower
off/powerupcycleoftheTWRAUDIOSGTLcircuitry.Thepoweroffstatewilllast
approximately20msec.
2.4 MasterClockSourceSelection
ThereisachoiceoftwomasterclocksourcesfortheSGTL5000intheTWRAUDIOSGTLmodule.The
selectionisdonewithjumperJ6:
1) J6off:LocalSi5351Atunable clockgenerator(24.576MHzdefaultfrequency)
2) J6on:MasterclockfromtheTowerprocessormoduleI2Sport
2.4.1 MasterClockCompatibilityWithPreviousModuleRevisions
TheTWRAUDIOSGTLRevDmodulecanreplacepreviousmodulerevisionsafterproperselectionof
themasterclocksource.ToreplaceaRevBmodule,ensurethatjumperJ6ison(insertedinposition1
2),toselectthemasterclockfromtheTower
processormodule.ToreplaceaRevB1module,ensure
thatjumperJ6isoff(notinsertedinposition12),toselectthemasterclockfromtheonboardclock
generator.
2.5 I2SInterface
TheI2Sinterfacehasaserialdatainput,aserialdataoutput,aframesyncclock(alsocalledleft/right
clock)andaserialbitclock.Thetwoclocklinesareusedtoclockbothdatalines.TheI2Ssignalsare
connectedtotheTowerSystemprocessormoduleI2Sport.
2.6 I/Oconnectors
AlltheinputandoutputconnectorsontheTWRAUDIOSGTLaredescribedinthefollowingsections.

2.6.3 Analogaudiostereoheadphoneoutputs
Theanalogaudiostereoheadphoneoutputsareavailableasfollows:
1) Atthe3.5mmconnectorsJ4andJ7throughDCblockingcapacitors
2) Atthe3.5mmconnectorJ10usingvirtualheadphonegroundandnoDCblockingcapacitors
TheSGTL5000audio
codeccandriveasingleheadphoneload,soonlyoneofconnectorsJ4,J7orJ10
maybeusedatatime.
NotethatthecapacitorlessheadphoneoutputatconnectorJ10mustbeusedonlywithstereo
headphones.Thisoutputshouldnotbeusedtoconnecttoamplifiers,ortoheadsetswith
microphones,otherwisethevirtualheadphonegroundmaybeshortcircuited.
Recommendedheadphoneimpedanceisintherangeof16to32Ohms.
2.6.4 Analogaudiomonomicrophoneinputs
TherearethreeoptionsformicrophoneinputtotheSGTL5000:
1) BoardmountedmicrophoneP1theTWRAUDIO‐SGTLmoduleshipswithouttheP1
microphoneontheboard.Ifdesired,P1canbesolderedatitslocationontheboard.
RecommendedP1microphoneisthePanasonicpartWM64PCTorequivalent.Microphonebias
mustbesuppliedbyensuringthatjumperJ14isinposition12.Thisinputisselectedwhen
jumperJ11isinposition34.
2) Externalmicrophoneinput3.5mmconnectorJ13amicrophonefromaPCheadsetcanbe
pluggedintotheJ13connector.Microphonebiasissuppliedfroma3.3Vsourcethrougha10k
Ohmresistor.ThisinputisselectedwhenjumperJ11
isinposition35.
3) Smartphoneheadsetinput3.5mmconnector J7aSmartphoneheadsetwithheadphonesand
microphonecanbepluggedintotheJ7connector.Microphonebiasmustbesuppliedby
ensuringthatjumperJ14isinposition12.TheiPhone®headsetiscompatiblewiththeJ7
connector.ThisinputisselectedwhenjumperJ11isinposition13.
NotethatnotallSmartphoneheadsetsarecompatiblewiththesignalsattheJ7connector.Ensurethat
theheadset3.5mmplughasthecorrectsignalconnectivityasshownbelow:
1) Tip:HeadphoneLeftChannelOutput
2) Ring:Headphone
RightChannelOutput
3) Ring:Ground
