Note:
This requires an Active Sync connection)
7. Remove PDA from cradle/sync.
8. Insert CF receiver or pair bluetooth receiver (see
Locking into position
)
9. Activate TeleType GPS on the PDA
Navigating on Water:
1. To begin your marine trip, make sure you are in Marine Navigation (select
Tools > Navigation >
Marine
)
2. Load the appropriate maps (see
Loading Marine Charts
)
3. Set Marine Preferences (see
Set Marine Preferences
)
4. Plan your trip (see
Planning a Trip
)
5. Once your position is locked (see
Locking into position
) you can set out on your trip.
6. You may change preferences, zoom level, or even waypoints while traveling to best suit your needs.
Navigating on Land:
1. Once you arrive at your destination port, it is simple to begin street navigation (select
Tools >
Navigation > Street
)
2. You may create a route to an address (similar to creating a Trip, see
Software Documentation
)
3. You can search for a hotel, restaurant, or address by selecting
Tools > Find
and entering the
appropriate criteria. This will add the location to your waypoints. You can even route directly from
your locked in position to any waypoint you have added. For more information, see
Software Documentation
. (
Note:
Commercial business lookup may require purchase of Yellow
Pages Premium, sold separately).
1.4 Important Information about Marine Maps
·
Marine maps help provide information to users about various waterways and their surrounding
areas. However, marine maps do not provide information about water temperature.
·
The program is unable to create routes specifically on waterways (as street navigation would on
highways), unless a ferry route is available. However, there are alternatives to planning a route via
waterway, see
Plotting a Course
for more details.
·
You will not be able to find a specific body of water by name, rather you will need to search using
waypoint coordinates. You will need to know the approximate location of the body of water, such as
a nearby city or state, load the maps for that particular area, perform a manual search. For more
information on how to load maps, see
Loading Marine Maps
.

3How-to-Guide
3.1 Locking into position
·
GPS receivers function by line of sight, meaning they function best in an area with a clear and
unobstructed view of the sky. In some cases you may prefer to connect an external antenna and
place it in such an area. Please note that TeleType GPS receivers are neither waterproof nor water
resistant. If no antenna is available, you may need to try areas below deck that still have a view of
the sky or protect your unit accordingly. See GPS Receiver documentation for more help.
·
To see the satellite signal strength, click/tap on
Tools > GPS Status
and then select the "
Status
"
tab. At the bottom of the window will be a list of satellites and their signal strength indicated with
vertical blue bars. Depending on your location and the signal strength, it may take up to 10 minutes
will not see any satellites listed. In addition, please make sure that you set your PDA clock to local
time and date accurate to within 1 hour.
·
If you are outside and have a clear view of the sky and still do not see any satellites listed, click/tap
on the "
Status
" tab. You should see strings of data scrolling through the center of your screen. If you
do not, please make sure that your receiver is connected securely to your PDA, the COM port is
correct for your PDA, and the baud rate is set to 4800 bps (may differ if you use third party
receivers). If you do not know the correct port, select
Find GPS Port
. If
Find GPS Port
does not
work either, try each port manually. Do this by selecting a COM port from the list and
clicking/tapping "
Open Port.
" If correct, data should scroll up the screen. If, after checking all ports,
data still fails to scroll, perform a soft reset on your PDA, and try again. Upon opening the program,
data should be scrolling automatically. If data still does not scroll, please visit the
TeleType FAQ page
for suggestions.
3.2 Loading Marine Charts
To load Marine maps
If you currently have Street or Aviation Navigation and Maps on your TeleType Pro GPS screen, please

you want.
The following is a brief description of each of the different types of navigation.
Marine Navigation
Selecting Marine Navigation will allow you to load, display, and edit parameters for marine maps.
Parameters are described in greater detail in the
Parameters
section.
Marine Navigation will display Marine maps and view detailed information about locations of known
ship wrecks, buoys, rocks underneath the ocean, ferry routes, and docks. For more information on
how to use this feature, please see section
Viewing information about Nautical Objects
.
Aviation Navigation
Selecting Aviation Navigation will allow you to load and view aviation maps. Note that you must
purchase Aviation maps from TeleType GPS for this function to work. For more information on
available settings, refer to the Aviation Manual.
Street Navigation
Street Navigation is used for creating and viewing routes on roads across the world. Features include
audible directions, auto load/unload of maps, door to door salesman routing and much more. For

3.6 Loading Other Maps
To load other maps
In order to load street maps or aviation maps, make sure you
change your navigation mode.
There are several different methods to load maps using your TeleType GPS Pro software:
1.
To load maps, open the TeleType GPS software. You should see a base map showing city points
in your country. (If you do not see this, you need to load
YourCountry_place.ttm
where
YourCountry
is replaced by the name of your country by using Option #2 below.) Zoom in
towards the area you wish to see in a detailed view.
2.
You may also click/tap on
File > Load > Load Map
to select a particular map to load. (Useful for
loading country
basemaps and to manually load any regular maps).
Manually load maps using the above menu.
3.
Maps for a single area can also be loaded by right-clicking on the map (tapping and holding on
PDA) on a particular location and selecting
Load/Unload
from the shortcut menu. Then you can
choose exactly which type of maps to load or unload for a particular area.
4. With the Auto Load feature enabled, the software will automatically load local maps and/or Yellow
Pages/POIs when you drive, fly, or navigate into an area, and unload them when you leave the
area, based on your preference.
5. Alternatively, if you wish to load a large area at one time, select
File > Load > Load in View.
From the
Load in View
, you may choose to load
Street Maps
,
Highway Only
,
Weather Maps
,
TOPO
, and/or
Aerial
. This will fill in the area you can see with the appropriate maps.
The following is a brief description of each type of map:
Street Maps
will load the detailed street maps of all towns and cities in the center of your
screen.
Highway Only
will load only the highway maps for the states in the center of your screen.
Weather Maps
will load detailed weather information from the National Doppler Radar
Service Image.
Traffic Maps
will load information about traffic accidents and road construction sites.
How-to-Guide 17
© 2005 ... TeleType GPS
Topographic Maps
will load a detailed map that displays elevation, forests, and
streams, and other objects. For more information regarding Topographic maps, see the
TOPO symbols section.
Aerial
will load a s
atellite photo of the area, displaying an overhead view of the terrian.
Weather, Traffic, Topographic, and Aerial maps are Add-ons that
need to be purchased separately from TeleType GPS.
On your laptop/desktop, draw a box around an area you wish to load using the left mouse button or
stylus. Once the box is drawn, right-click (tap once on the PDA) inside the box to load the maps within
that box. To unload, after the box is drawn, right-click (tap) outside the box. Left-clicking (tapping)
inside the box will zoom in, and left-clicking (tapping) outside of the box will zoom out. See the table
below for a summary of these functions.

Note that the Right-click commands are
only
for street
navigation, not for marine.
During install, maps are copied to the hard drive but still need
to be loaded into the TeleType GPS software as described
above so you can view them.
To accommodate the limited memory on PDA devices, maps
are only installed to the desktop computer. You will then
decide which maps to export to the PDA and loaded into the
software.
If maps are being loaded from a storage card, that storage
card must remain in the PDA for the program to operate
properly.
The
basemap for a country will have to be loaded manually by
going to
File > Load > Load Maps
once it has been exported
to the PDA.
Weather, Traffic, and Temporary Flight Restriction Maps are
paid subscriptions and required passwords for access.
3.7 Adding / Deleting Waypoints
A
waypoint is a position marker that can be used to help create a route or simply to mark a position for
future reference. You can create waypoints regardless of whether the GPS receiver is active or
inactive.
