EX5000 SET UP INSTRUCTIONS
Thank you for purchasing the Martin Yale EX5000 labeler/tabber. Your unit is
designed to provide you with years of service, and is virtually maintenance free.
Upon receiving your unit, make a close inspection of the machine and make sure
you have the following components.
1. EX5000 labeler/ tabber unit. 9. Slotted connection plate.
2. Label support tray. 10. 4 Phillips/ star washer.
3. Tab dispenser assembly.
4. (2) Media guides.
5. (2) Media angular supports with slides.
6. 24VDC power supply.
7. Media catch tray.
8. EX5000 labeler/ tabber operating instructions.

Initially, install the slotted connection plate (#9) using the four screw holes,
shown in pictures one and two. (Bottom of page one). Once this is installed, it is
not removed from the machine again.
The first determination that must be made to set your unit up is whether the initial
use of the machine will be as a tabber or labeler. Choose the appropriate
component and install into slot on front of unit. NOTE: The black thumb knobs
are used for this, and need to be used as a fastener with either component
(see photo).
Once the accessory is lined up, go ahead and tighten both black thumb knobs.
Note: Only tighten snug, there is no need to tighten them up any more than
what is required to keep the component stationary. When you get the
dispenser accessory installed, attach each media guide to the wide, black frame
support directly behind the foam drive rollers. When lined up, tighten down the
small, white thumb knobs so that they are providing grip to hold the guides
stationary. They can be more precisely set once the machine is ready to be
loaded.
Next, put the media angular supports onto the back of the unit. There are four
sets of holes available for these, and typically there should be a set of holes left
empty in between them, although they may be used side by side if the stock is
small enough. The purpose of the guides is to provide an approximate 45-
degree angle, downward, to the stock as it feeds. It is for this purpose that the
slide piece on each one can be adjusted. (See additional photo)

Once the brackets are in place, the retarder plate needs to be adjusted to feed
your media individually. Below are two methods that can be used to calibrate
feed. NOTE: When testing the feed system of the unit do not use more
than 3 4 pieces on the test run, that way if the unit jams due to
misadjustment it will not be severe.
Positioning Feed Brackets
1. Take one piece of media and put in between brackets.
2. Adjust each bracket in a slight funnel effect so that they do not allow any
sideplay. Do not let them pinch the media. NOTE: It is easiest to
reload unit running if you set the brackets with a slight funnel effect;
wider at top than at the bottom.
3. Once brackets are positioned, adjust the slider piece so that it will keep
the loaded stock at a downward slope towards the feed plate tips.
NOTE: If smaller stock is fed through the machine with only one side edge
sitting directly on a feed wheel, it could cause crooked feed. If possible,
arrange stock so that it is centered on at least two feed wheels.

Method #1
Feed System, Right Side.
1. Loosen the (2) blue thumb knobs on the retarder plate. Lift slightly above
the surface of the feed wheels.
2. Manually rotate the feed wheel so that one of their teeth is directly
beneath the feed tips of the retarder plate.
3. Take one piece of media, to be run, and place under plate tips from side.
4. Allow plate to fall, put a slight downward pressure on the plate with one
hand, and tighten knob with the other hand.
5. Repeat steps 2 4 for the other knob.
6. Test by leaving the tab/ label in “OFF” position and activating feed with
just a few pieces of stock. The stock should feed one at a time, and the
gap between each piece should be consistent.
A slight readjustment of the feed system may be necessary.
Method #2
NOTE: This method can be used on single sheet applications.
1. Loosen blue thumb knobs in retarder plate.

2. Lift the plate, and manually rotate the feed tires until one of their teeth is
directly beneath the tips of the plate.
3. Lower plate down, and then lift up until just a sliver of light shows through.
Tighten knob and repeat for the other side.
4. Some slight readjustment may be necessary. Run 3 4 pieces at a time
to test. Stock should feed evenly and gap between each piece should be
consistent.
NOTE: Your stock should be centered on the feed wheels. If you are
running a small stock, do not allow one side edge to go directly over a feed
wheel if the other side edge is not doing the same thing.
Programming and operation of the unit.
When the unit is turned on, the display will be as follows.
1. Turn unit on.
2. Press label and media at the same time.
3. Unit will display “Med for testing LAB” for setup.
4. Press label key, unit will display “Med for mode Lab for pitch”.
5. Press media key: Med for tabber, Lab for Labeler. Make appropriate
choice. NOTE: When back to operational mode, the screen should
show the appropriate choice, i.e. lab or tab.

Setting the ‘Pitch value’.
The pitch must be programmed into the unit for it to function properly. The pitch
is defined as the distance from the bottom edge of one tab/ label to the bottom
edge of the next tab/ label. It is important that the proper number is programmed
here. Any difference between programmed and actual will cause a drifting tab/
label.
1. Hit the ‘label’ and ‘media’ key at the same time. Unit will display MED for
mode Lab for pitch.
2. Hit label key, the unit will show the current pitch value.
3. Use the label key to change values and the media key to install.
Threading the unit
Tabber
To thread the unit for tabbing, the tab dispenser assembly must be on the unit. It
is assumed in the instructions that the assembly has already been installed on
the machine. If not, please refer to page two for proper installation.
1. Remove small o-ring on the tab assembly, and remove the outer most tab
reel.
2. Install the reel of tabs on the unit so that they will feed from the bottom
side of the roll. (See photo).
3. Peel the first 15 20 tabs off the backing.
4. Because the foam drive rollers provide a great deal of grippage, make
sure you leave some slack in between the drive rollers and the waste
take-up spindle. Start the waste onto the spindle by hand in a clockwise
fashion. If you need to advance the backing through the drive rollers, this
can be done while the feed is off, by holding down the label key. NOTE:
Once you have set the machine up, do not press the label key while
the feed system is off. This key is used as a jog feature once
activated, and will change the position of your tab/ label.
5. When you start your run, the first tab should be ½ peeled off the peel bar.
VII
Setting the label location in regard to the top edge of the document.
Labeler
1. With the labeler and media both in the on position, hold down the label
key.
2. Unit will go into the label adjustment screen.
3. Screen will start flashing between the adjustment, and “Keys to change”
one key will increase the setting, one will decrease. Use both keys at the
same time to install.
Some experimentation may be necessary to find best location.
The approximate setting for positioning the label directly underneath the leading
edge of a document is 38. The approximate setting for the center of a NO. 10
envelope is 75. The higher the number setting the lower the label will be applied.
When you start your job the first label should be 1/8 peeled on the peel bar.
NOTE: There is no tab adjustment setting. This is only used in labeling
mode.
This should provide you with all of the information you will need. Please call
