Introduction to
BluRay
(Simplified)
DOC: UK/CCC/SH/BLURAY V1.0
What is Blu-ray?
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation
optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a
group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media
manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic,
Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was
developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video
(HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.
The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs
and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.
This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs
will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.
While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-
RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet
laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used,
Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs
through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. Blu-ray
technology allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's
possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD.
Everything that DVD can do, Blu-ray disc does and
more. Blu laser technology enables up to 50 GB of
storage -- five times the capacity of DVD. That's room
for nine hours of HD. Or 23 hours of Standard
Definition content. Or tens of thousands of songs.
Unbelievable data storage
From movies to music to games to PC software and life backup, Blu-ray Disc is
your solution! The system embraces pre-recorded titles (BD-ROM), discs that you
can record yourself (BD-R) and discs you can re-record over and over again (BD-
RE). Panasonic makes both BD-R and BD-RE discs in 25 and 50 GB capacities
. We
can anticipate not only BD players for your living room, but also BD recorders,
BD-based game consoles, BD drives for your personal computer and even BD
camcorders using compact 8 cm (3") discs!
And what about your existing library of DVDs and CDs?
The Panasonic Blu-ray disc system uses the same 12 cm and 8 cm disc sizes to
support backward-compatibility with your CDs and DVDs and other optical disc
formats. Even better, when playing a BD-ROM or DVD disc, the Panasonic DMP-
BD10 Blu-ray Disc Player up-converts content recorded in the 480I/P, 720P or
1080I format to 1080P with high precision. So your existing DVD collection will
look even better than before.
In the digital world, picture quality depends on bit rates. For example, DVDs can
deliver 10 Mbps. HDTV broadcasts can reach 19 Mbps. But Blu-ray Disc outshines
them all with up to 48 Mbps!
Think about a marvellous ceiling painting with intricate detail. Or beautiful
evening scenery with many subtle variations of the same colour. The Panasonic
DMP-BD10 Blu-ray Disc Player renders images like these with enormous accuracy,
faithfully conveying details, textures and colour depth. In the human eye, an
image received by the retina is sent to the brain through around 1.2 million
nerves. The DMP-BD10, by comparison, uses more than 2 million pixels to create
each frame. The high-definition images reproduced by the DMP-BD10 may be the
most beautiful images you've ever seen.
DVD can provide a dynamic, lifelike 5.1ch surround sound, but in the recording
process the original sound data is thinned out and compressed. With up to 7.1
channels of surround sound and options for up to 32 streams of audio, BD is an
amazing experience for your ears. And since the Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-ray
Disc player can provide up to 7.1ch surround sound, it can recreate the ambience
of a concert hall with remarkable accuracy and even convey the movement of
rising clouds of mist.
Blu-ray Disc enjoys the enthusiastic support of major companies in electronics,
computers, videogames, recording media, music and movies. Seven of
Hollywood's leading studios are among the 170+ companies that support BD. So
when you buy a Blu-ray Disc, you'll be in good company.
