StorSimple Appliance Quick Start Guide
Zero to Cloud Storage – 10 Steps in Under 10 Minutes
Pre-Requisites
To complete the initial configuration, you’ll need to connect a serial console or a computer with terminal
emulation to the StorSimple appliance. Use the serial cables and the accessories that came with your appliance.
The serial connection must be set up as follows: 115.2Kbps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, flow control
none or XON/XOFF.
Refer to the pre-installation checklist to ensure you have everything you’ll need to configure your appliance.
Access to the appliance requires IE (v7 or higher), or Chrome (v12 or higher) or Firefox (v3.5 or later).
Steps
1. Mount your appliance (see Rack Mount Guide) and connect to redundant power sources. If using 7520,
connect the head unit to the EBOD enclosure. Connect your appliance to the network (refer to the full
Appliance QSG). Ensure that your computer is connected to the same network as the MGMT interface.
2. Using the provided serial cables, connect your console to each of the two serial console ports of the
appliance head unit. The serial port can be identified by the wrench icon on either controller on the
head unit.
3. Once the appliance boots, press ‘ENTER’ a few times until the ‘StorSimple (? For help) >’ prompt appears,
and type ‘setup’ to configure the management interface IP address, subnet mask, and gateway.
4. On your computer, open your browser and point it to the IP address configured on the management
interface, i.e. http://ip-address. Login as user ‘admin’ and using the password of ‘password’.
5. Using the setup wizard, configure the appliance hostname, network interfaces, DNS servers, and NTP
servers (use a Windows domain controller if you don't have an NTP server), and exit the setup wizard.
6. Access Configure > Cloud > Cloud Credentials. You will need your Cloud Storage Account information
such as Access/Security keys to create Cloud Credentials. Next, access Configure > Cloud > Cloud
Configuration. Under the 'General' tab, specify the primary and backup cloud credentials to use. Under
the 'Security' tab, supply the AES 256bit key from your key management system or use a passphrase.
Remember to keep this information in a safe place.
7. Configure Access Control Records (ACRs) by going to Configure > Security Settings > Access Control
Records. Each Access Control Record defines a server to which you may allow access to volumes you
create on this appliance.
8. Configure Volumes by going to Configure > Volumes. You’ll need to associate each volume with a
Cloud Configuration, one or more ACRs (granting server access), and supply other parameters such as
size and type of the volume.
9. From each of your servers, configure the iSCSI initiator with the IP address of one of the DATA
interfaces as a target portal that should be used for discovery.
10. Finally, initialize your new volume(s) from your host operating system.
If you are using Windows, open the MMC Disk Management snap-in and initialize the disks presented
to your server from the appliance. Configure them to use the NTFS file system with a 64KB allocation
unit size, supply a drive letter, and perform a quick format.
If using VMware, access your server using vSphere client. Navigate to Configuration > Storage to add
storage. In the wizard, set the Disk/LUN types as default; supply the iSCSI device, and review the disk
layout. Provide a unique datastore name and adjust values and capacity as needed.
You’re done! Be sure to take a configuration backup. Should you need more information, please refer to the
detailed Quick Start Guide (QSG) or the product documentation.
Lights-Out Management - When the appliance is installed in a remote datacenter, or a computer room with limited access,
ensure that the serial connections to both controllers are always connected to a serial console switch or similar equipment. This
will allow out-of-band remote control and support operations in case of network disruption or unexpected failures.
