Welcome
Thank you for purchasing a 5000/7000 series StorSimple appliance! This safety guide covers
important information that will help ensure your safety while installing and using your
appliance. Please carefully read and follow the instructions as detailed in the following
sections.
Safety Notices
Please read the following safety notices before proceeding. These notices are for your
safety and protection, and to ensure proper operation of your appliance.
Safe Handling
A fully configured enclosure can weigh up to 32kg (70lb). Do not try to lift it by
yourself.
Before moving the enclosure, always ensure that 2 people are needed to handle the
weight. Be aware that one person lifting this weight can sustain injuries.
Do not lift the enclosure by the handles on the PCMs. They are not designed to take
the weight.
Safety
All plug-in modules and blank plates are part of the fire enclosure and must only be
removed when a replacement can be immediately added. The system must not be
run without all modules or blanks in place.
Permanently unplug the unit before you move it or if you think it has become
damaged in any way.
The plug on the power supply cord is used as the main disconnect device. Ensure
that the socket outlets are located near the equipment and are easily accessible.
When powered by multiple AC sources, disconnect all supply power for complete
isolation.

A safe electrical earth connection must be provided to the power supply cords.
Check the grounding of the enclosure before applying power.
Provide a suitable power source with electrical overload protection to meet the
requirements laid down in the technical specification.
When bifurcated power cords (‘Y’ leads) are used, they must only be connected to a
supply range of 200-240V.
In order to comply with applicable safety, emission and thermal requirements, no
covers should be removed and all bays must be populated with plug-in modules.
The power connection should always be disconnected prior to removal of a PCM
from the enclosure. A faulty PCM must be replaced with a fully operational module
within 24 hrs. Do not remove a faulty PCM unless you have a replacement model of
the correct type ready for insertion.
Caution: If this equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer,
the protection provided by the equipment may be impaired.
Caution: The RJ45 socket is for an Ethernet connection only and must not be
connected to a telecommunications network.
Note: The appliance employs a front-to-back cooling design. Be sure to install it
in a rack that can accommodate this design.
Rack System Precautions
The following safety requirements must be considered when mounting in a rack cabinet.
The following safety requirements must be considered when mounting in a rack
cabinet.

The rack design should support the total weight of the installed enclosures and
incorporate stabilizing features suitable to prevent the rack from tipping or being
pushed over during installation or normal use.
When loading a rack, fill the rack from the bottom up and empty from the top down.
Do not slide more than one enclosure out of the rack at a time to avoid the danger
of the rack toppling over.
The rack design should take into consideration the maximum enclosure operating
ambient temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
The system must be operated with low-pressure rear exhaust installation (back
pressure created by rack doors and obstacles not to exceed 5 Pascal (0.5 mm water
gauge)).
The rack should have a safe electrical distribution system. It must provide over-
current protection for the enclosure and must not be overloaded by the total
number of enclosures installed. The electrical power consumption rating shown on
the nameplate should be observed.
The electrical distribution system must provide a reliable ground for each enclosure
in the rack.
Each power supply in each enclosure has a ground leakage current of 1.0 mA max at
60Hz, 264V. The design of the electrical distribution system must take into
consideration the total ground leakage current from all power supplies in all
enclosures. The rack may require labeling with “HIGH LEAKAGE CURRENT. Ground
(earth) connection is essential before connecting a supply.”
The rack, when configured with the enclosures, must meet the safety requirements of
UL 60950-1 and IEC 60950-1/EN 60950-1.
Power Cooling Module Operation
The appliance is designed to operate with two Power and Cooling Modules. Each of the
PCM has a power supply and a dual-axis fan. During a critical condition, the system allows
for a failure of one power supply while continuing normal operations. Two PCMs (and
775-0007-0200 Rev B

hence power supplies) must always be installed. A single PCM does not provide redundant
power. Hence, the failure of an only PCM can result in downtime or possible data loss.
You must replace the failed PCM within 24 hours. Once a PCM is removed for
replacement, the replacement must be completed within 10 minutes after removal.
Warning: Do not remove the covers from the PCM. Danger of electric shock
inside. Return the PCM to StorSimple for replacement.
Warning: Do not remove a PCM unless a replacement can be installed immediately.
The enclosure must not be operated without all modules in place.
ESD Precautions
Ensure that you have installed and checked a suitable anti-static wrist or ankle strap and
observe all conventional ESD precautions when handling modules and components. Avoid
contact with backplane components and module connectors. ESD damage is not covered by
warranty.
Battery Disposal
The power supply uses a special battery to protect during temporary short-term power
outages. The battery is seated in the PCM.
Warning: There is a danger of explosion if the battery is disposed of improperly.
Dispose of used batteries in accordance with national regulations.
Caution: The battery may present a risk of fire, explosion, or burns. Do not
disassemble, crush, or heat above 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) or
incinerate. Replace the PCM battery with a battery provided by StorSimple only.
Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.

appliance head unit. The serial port can be identified by the wrench icon on either controller on the
head unit.
3. Once the appliance boots, press ‘ENTER’ a few times until the ‘StorSimple (? For help) >’ prompt appears,
and type ‘setup’ to configure the management interface IP address, subnet mask, and gateway.
4. On your computer, open your browser and point it to the IP address configured on the management
interface, i.e. http://ip-address. Login as user admin and using the password of password.
5. Using the setup wizard, configure the appliance hostname, network interfaces, DNS servers, and NTP
servers (use a Windows domain controller if you don't have an NTP server), and exit the setup wizard.
6. Access Configure > Cloud > Cloud Credentials. You will need your Cloud Storage Account information
such as Access/Security keys to create Cloud Credentials. Next, access Configure > Cloud > Cloud
Configuration. Under the 'General' tab, specify the primary and backup cloud credentials to use. Under
the 'Security' tab, supply the AES 256bit key from your key management system or use a passphrase.
Remember to keep this information in a safe place.
7. Configure Access Control Records (ACRs) by going to Configure > Security Settings > Access Control

create on this appliance.
8. Configure Volumes by going to Configure > Volumes. You’ll need to associate each volume with a
Cloud Configuration, one or more ACRs (granting server access), and supply other parameters such as
size and type of the volume.
9. From each of your servers, configure the iSCSI initiator with the IP address of one of the DATA
interfaces as a target portal that should be used for discovery.
10. Finally, initialize your new volume(s) from your host operating system.
If you are using Windows, open the MMC Disk Management snap-in and initialize the disks presented
to your server from the appliance. Configure them to use the NTFS file system with a 64KB allocation
unit size, supply a drive letter, and perform a quick format.
If using VMware, access your server using vSphere client. Navigate to Configuration > Storage to add
storage. In the wizard, set the Disk/LUN types as default; supply the iSCSI device, and review the disk
layout. Provide a unique datastore name and adjust values and capacity as needed.
You’re done! Be sure to take a configuration backup. Should you need more information, please refer to the
detailed Quick Start Guide (QSG) or the product documentation.
Lights-Out Management - When the appliance is installed in a remote datacenter, or a computer room with limited access,
