1 General Information / Introduction
1.1 Notes about Operating Instructions
Please study these instructions carefully before operation.
The Soil Deagglomerator "pulverisette 8" are hereafter re-
ferred to simply as "deagglomerator“ respectively.
All operators must be familiar with the contents of the operat-
ing instructions.
Please observe all notes concerning your safety.
The deagglomerator was designed with the user's safety in
mind, however inherent risks cannot be excluded. Follow the
advices in these instructions to avoid risks to users.
The symbols in the right hand margin highlight the risks de-
scribed in the text.
Symbols are also to be found on the instrument warning users
of possible risks.
Warning symbols are surrounded by a triangle.
These operating instructions do not constitute a complete
technical description. They describe only the details required
for safe operation and maintenance for usage under normal
conditions.

1.3 Short Description of the Machine
1.3.1 Applications
The "pulverisette 8" is a deagglomerator for processing of dried
soil samples. The deagglomerator is used primarily in institutes
for soil analysis and in laboratories for agricultural research and
analysis.
Due to the rapid method of operation of the deagglomerator, it is
of particular advantage when a large number of samples are to
be dealt with in an short space of time. Processing of a sample,
i.e. size reduction of the agglomerates and removal of the stones,
requires a pass time of less than one minute. The amount of
cleaning required after the passage of a sample is minimal, and
in most cases cleaning is unnecessary as the "pulverisette 8"
cleans itself out automatically with the built-in brushes during
grinding.
1.3.2 Method of Operation
In the processing of soil samples, agglomerates must be broken
up and larger stones (over 2 mm) separated out. Agglomerates
are broken up by crushing and grinding: by impact and friction.
The deagglomerator combines both processing methods:
In a cylindrical grinding chamber, rotating spiral synthetic brushes
throw the sample against the grinding chamber wall and thus
crush the agglomerates by impact. At the same time, the bristles,
which are relatively hard, drive the sample along a sieving sheet
with trapezoidal 2 mm openings. The friction on this coarse
sieving sheet gives rise to further size reduction and separation
according to particle size.
The sample is added through a lidded funnel, which is attached
above the deagglomerator. After the deagglomerator is switched
on, the synthetic brushes initially run at an elevated speed for an
adjustable length of time in order to enhance the size reduction
by impact.
Then, at a lower speed, the sweeping effect of the brushes is
used so that the comminuted fraction of the sample is driven
through the perforated sieve, the sieve is simultaneously
cleaned, and the larger, solid stones are "swept out".
The comminuted sample is collected in a plastic container below
the mill. The stones are collected in a small container at the right-
hand side of the grinding section. If exessive dust is created, this
can be removed using a vacuum cleaner.

The noise level is around 70-100 dB(A). The value fluctuates
greatly depending on the material being ground.
Voltage
The deagglomerator operates at the voltage shown on the
nameplate. Operation at any other voltage is not permitted.

See nameplate. Mains connection should be protected with a
16 A fuse.

2 Operating Safety
2.1 General Safety Instructions
Read the operating instructions carefully before use.
The operators must be familiar with the contents of the operat-
ing instructions.
To this end, for example, the operating instructions must with
the instrument.
Do not remove labels.
Use only original accessories. Failure to do so may call into
question the performance of the instrument.
Unauthorized modification of the instrument or any part
thereof will result in the loss of the conformity to European di-
rectives which is asserted by Fritsch.
The instrument can only to be used for the purpose described
in Section 1.3.1 Applications.
Using the instrument for purposes other than those mentioned
above is considered contrary to its designated use. The manu-
facturer cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from
such use. The risk of such misuse lies entirely with the user.
In addition to the operating instructions, observe and instruct
the user in all other generally applicable legal and other man-
datory regulations relevant to accident prevention an environ-
ment protection.
Wear protective gloves
Wear ear protectors if the noise level is higher than 85dB(A).
When oxidizable materials such as metals, organic materials,
wood, coal, plastic, etc. are ground or sieved, the risk of spon-
taneous ignition (dust explosion) exists whenever the fine par-
ticles exceed a specific percentage. While such materials are
being ground or sieved, it is therefore necessary to take spe-
cial safety precautions (e.g. wet grinding or wet sieving) and
the work must be supervised by a specialist.
Furthermore, the MAC values at place of work specified in the
pertinent safety regulations must be adhered to. Where appli-
cable, ventilation must be provided or the instrument must be
operated under an exhaust hood.
The instrument is not explosion-proof and is unsuitable to
grind or sieve materials which are explosive, combustible or
promote combustion.
2.2 Operators
No one other than authorized persons should operate the in-
strument and it must be serviced and repaired by trained spe-
cialists.
No one suffering from medical problems or under the influence
of medications, drugs, alcohol or overtiredness should be per-
mitted to operate the instrument.

2.3 Protective Devices
Protective devices should be used for the intended purpose
and must not be made unserviceable or removed.
All protective devices should be regularly checked for com-
pleteness and to ensure that they are functioning correctly.
See Section 5 on Maintenance.
The soil mill has an extensive safety system:
1. A rotary pocket feeder prevents persons reaching into the
filling funnel.
2. A personal protection switch monitors the hood:
- The soil mill stops when the hood is opened.
- The appliance will not start when the hood is open.
3. A second personal protection switch monitors the drawer
on the right-hand side of the appliance.
2.4 Danger Points
Caution. Do not bump into the hood when it is open.
Danger of crushing when the hood is being closed.
Danger of crushing when the collecting container and the draw
are being closed.
2.5 Electrical Safety
2.5.1 General
After the STOP button is pressed, the deagglomerator will
come to a standstill after a short period.
Disconnect the mains plug if the deagglomerator is to be inop-
erative for an extended period (e.g. over night).
2.5.2 Protection against Restarting
In the event of a mains failure during operation or after the deag-
glomerator has been isolated from the mains, the deagglomera-
tor will not restart.
2.5.3 Overload Protection
In the event of overloading of the deagglomerator, a motor cur-
rent monitoring device will switch the motor off, and the red
OVERLOAD warning light will come on.

3 Installation
3.1 Unpacking
Pull out the nails with which the hood is fastened on the trans-
port pallet. The hood is the wooden box placed over the trans-
port pallet.
Lift the hood off the transport pallet.
Check that the items supplied correspond to your order.
3.2 Transport
Transport the deagglomerator on the transport pallet
using a fork lift truck or a hand fork lift truck.
Do not step under the transport pallet.
3.3 Erection
Lift the deagglomerator off the transport pallet.
Observe VBG 8, VBG 9a and VBG 9!
Erect the deagglomerator horizontally onto a level, stable sur-
face, indoors. It is not necessary to fasten down the deag-
glomerator on the selected site.
Under no circumstances operate the deagglomerator while it
is standing on the transport pallet.
Ensure that there is good access to the deagglomerator.
The ambient temperature must be between 0 and 40°C.
3.4 Electrical Connection
Before making the electrical connection, compare the voltage
and current values shown on the nameplate with the values of
the mains supply to which the deagglomerator is to be con-
nected.
The motor cannot be operated at other voltages.
The soil mill is equipped with a pole-changing three-phase motor.
With this pole-changing, the motor can run at two different
speeds.

3.5 Initial Operation to Check the Direction of
Rotation
Connect the appliance to the mains.
Close the hood and close the two toggle-type fasteners.
Place the container for the comminuted material in the receiv-
ing tray below the deagglomerator, and move it towards the
rear with the tilt lever. There, the container will automatically
be pressed against the funnel in a dust-tight manner by ten-
sion springs.
Slide the small collecting container (drawer) into the passage
on the right, so that the actuating key bolted onto it engages in
the safety switch. Then push the securing lever down.
When you switch the deagglomerator on for the first time,
check the direction of rotation of the motor by observing the
rotation of the motor fan.
If the motor direction of rotation does not correspond to the ar-
row on the motor housing, two phases in the connecting plug
(not in the motor terminal box) should be swapped.
The work for adaptation of the direction of rotation should
be performed only by qualified, instructed personnel.
4 Working with the Deaglommerator
4.1 Installation of Suction Dust Removal
The hose of a vacuum cleaner can be inserted on the right-hand
side at the rear of the soil mill (internal diameter of the flange
46 mm).
4.2 Sample preparation
Only completely dry soil samples may be processed in the "pul-
verisette 8" soil mill. Samples must therefore be dried before-
hand.
For individual samples of approx. 500 ml, storage for 24 hours
spread out loosely in a ventilated drying cabinet or drying room at
approx. 80°C has proved to be effective.
The sample should be processed in the soil mill on the same day.
(Otherwise the sample will absorb moisture again so that the
processing of the sample and the automatic cleaning are im-
peded.)

4.3 Operation
Always observe the following points before operation:
Close the hood and close the two toggle-type fasteners.
Place the container for the comminuted material in the receiv-
ing tray below the deagglomerator, and move it towards the

4.3.1 Speeds and Times
The deagglomerator runs at two different speeds:
Deagglomeration is performed at the high speed.
The run time is selected at the press of a button with the timer.
On average around 10 seconds to 2 minutes.
After deagglomeration, the deagglomerator is automatically
switched to the low speed for "sweeping out".
Preselect the time for the automatic cleaning with the SET
TIME rotary switch: 12, 20 or 30 s.
4.3.2 Switching On
Press the START button on
the control panel (switch

4.3.3 Repeating
Sweeping-Out
Pressing the REPEAT
CLEAN OUT button causes
the sweeping-out to be re-
peated at the low speed for the preselected time (see SET TIME
rotary switch).
4.3.4 Switching Off
Pressing the POWER OFF button switches the appliance off.

4.3.5 Suction Dust Removal
With a vacuum cleaner connected, dust can be removed from the
deagglomerator without the hood having to be opened.
During deagglomeration, the vacuum cleaner should be
switched off.
During sweeping-out, operation of the vacuum cleaner will ef-
fect good cleaning.
Caution:
If too short a running time is selected with the high speed, the
deagglomeration of your sample might perhaps not be completed
- a vacuum cleaner could remove dust fractions of your sample.
4.3.6 Notes on the Operating Sequence
Initially set the time for size reduction to 30 seconds.
Initially set the time for sweeping out to 30 seconds.
Fill approx. 500 ml of the dried soil sample into the filling fun-
nel attached above, close the funnel and press the START
button. The mill will start up.
The mill will begin processing. After the set size reduction
time, the deaglommerator will switch to the lower speed for the
cleaning run.
At the same time, an increased discharge of the comminuted
sample through the sieve into the collecting container at-
tached below the mill will begin. Likewise, the non-
comminuted stones will now be swept into the container at-
tached on the right-hand side. At the same time, if a vacuum
cleaner is connected, it will remove dust remaining.
After the sweep-out time has elapsed, the mill stops and the
comminuted sample in the collecting container can be re-
moved.
The non-comminuted stones in the lateral container (drawer)
can be removed.
If you should find fractions of your sample there, which you
would have expected to be comminuted, the entire contents of
this container can be comminuted again in a second run.
When a subsequent sample of the same material is being
comminuted, the time for size reduction should be increased;
for a sample with an extremely high clay fraction, a size re-
duction time as long as 180 seconds, for example, could be
necessary.
The end of the discharge can easily be heared due to the de-
creasing noise level of the rotating brush and the material
moved by the brush.
If it is desired to interrupt the size reduction run for any rea-
son, the POWER OFF button can be pressed at any time.

4.4 Cleaning
When switched off, the deagglomerator can be cleaned with a
vacuum cleaner or with a broad paintbrush or a hand brush.
Do not allow any liquids to enter the machine.
Cleaning after the processing of a sample is often unnecessary
as the machine sweeps itself out automatically with the brushes.
Course material (stones) which may have been remained on the
sieving sheet will not become mixed with the sample during the
next grinding run.
For thorough cleaning, the sieving sheet can be removed:
Open both latch fasteners at the front and swing the entire up-
per section (hood) to the rear.
Lift the sieving sheet out.
Fine dust can also adhere to the inside of the collecting funnel
below the sieving sheet.
Inserting the sieve:
As you insert the sieving sheet, slide it to the left as far as it
will go; the rectangular opening for the discharge of the coarse
material should be on the right-hand side again.
Check the front and rear supports of the sieve and the flexible
sealing surfaces before you close the hood.
Both the supports and the sealing strips attached to the hood
must be undamaged, clean and smooth, and the sieve must
lie level. Otherwise, dust could escape at these sealing sur-
faces during operation of the soil mill.
Once the hood is closed, the soil mill is ready for operation
again.

5 Maintenance
Before commencing maintenance work, disconnect the
mains plug and secure the machine against being
switched on again unintentionally.
When maintenance work is being performed, this should
be indicated with a warning sign.
Maintenance work should be performed by qualified per-
sonnel only.
Make safety devices operative again after maintenance or
repair work has been performed.
Regular cleaning is the most important part of maintenance.
5.1 Changing wearing parts
Depending on how often the soil mill is used and on the types of
samples, the wearing parts should be checked from time to time
and replaced when necessary.
5.1.1 Changing the spiral brush
It is primarily the spiral brush which is affected by wear. When
the bristles of the round brush are so worn that they no longer
reach the sample fractions lying on the sieving sheet, the individ-
ual brush strips can be changed.
Changing the brush strips after the hood has been opened:
1. Unscrew the retaining pieces which are screwed on the brush
carrier for the purpose of fixing the strips.
2. Undo the lateral threaded connections of the brush strips.
3. Lift the brush strips out.
Insertion of a new brush strip is performed in the reverse se-
quence.
1. The length of the new brush strip may have to be adapted; to
do this, shorten the brush strip by grinding or sawing.
2. Tighten the lateral screw connections.
3. Then place the retaining pieces in the positions they occupied
before and screw them tight.
4. With a short test run, check that the brushes are fastened cor-
rectly.

5.1.2 Sealing strips
Check the sealing strips regularly to ensure that they are
undamaged.

6 Warranty
The warranty card included with this machine when it is supplied
must be completed and returned to the supplier before the war-
ranty can become effective.

7 Troubleshooting Checklist
Before commencing repair work, disconnect the mains
plug and secure the machine against being switched on
again unintentionally.
When repair work is being performed, this should be in-
dicated with a warning sign.
Make safety devices operative again after maintenance or
repair work has been performed.
Repair work should be performed by qualified personnel
only.
