Introducing SmartLynx Cat5 HDMI Extender
What is SmartLynx?
The SmartLynx is a combination of transmitter and receiver devices
designed to transmit high resolution computer video and/or audio
signal over Cat5 wire. HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia
Interface is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting
uncompressed digital data.
HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as set-top boxes
(STBs), Blu-Ray players, Personal computers (PCs), video game
consoles (such as the PlayStation 3 and some models of Xbox 360) to
compatible display devices e.g. computer monitors and digital
televisions.
Why is SmartLynx necessary?
Sometimes AV signals need to be transmitted over distances greater
than commonly specified product limitations of 5m. In this case several
choices are available, but most are expensive and bulky, which is in
some cases simply not practical, due to space limitations in the
conduits.
The SmartLynx allows the transmission of HDMI signals over a
standard Cat5 UTP cable over distances of up to 200m.
How does SmartLynx work?
The Smart-e SmartLynx is a transmitter and receiver pair designed to
extend HDMI, S/P DIF digital audio and IR/RS232 signals over (UTP)
unshielded twisted pair category 5 (Cat5) cabling. They are supplied with
a UK power supply and consist of: a transmitter with a HDMI input, a
digital audio input for separate S/P DIF and a Cat5 output and; a
receiver with a cat5 input and HDMI and S/P DIF outputs. Certain models
are also supplied with local
outputs and/or IR or RS232 connections.
The extended signals depends on the model but supported TV
resolutions are
480i/480p/576i/576p/720p/1080i/1080p48/50/60.

Introducing SmartLynx Cat5 HDMI Extender
1. Preparing for installation
Start installation process by ensuring that all HDMI displays and S/P DIF
decoders are compatible with the HDMI devices being used.
This is accomplished by connecting the devices directly to the computer
and checking that the devices operate as desired without the SmartLynx
system. Particular attention should be given to 1080p sources to make
sure all displays are 1080p compatible before connecting the SLX-800.
Potential System Set-ups:
Install CAT-5 wiring between desired locations. In order to minimise system
operation difficulties, avoid routing the system cables near fluorescent
lights, air conditioners, or machines that may create electrical noise
Installation and Operation

Installation and Operation
-4-
2. Transmitter connectivity
The SLX-TX800 connects to the source device (STB, Blu Ray, etc) via a
standard HDMI cable.
Additional connectivity includes:
i) Separate S/P DIF input (selectable)
ii) Infrared output for device control
iii) Cat 5* connection to remote receiver
iv) 24V PSU for Cat 5* circuitry
v) 5V PSU for HDMI connection (normally not needed)
Installation and Operation
3. Connecting the transmitter
3.1 Turn on the SLX-TX800 by connecting the 24Vdc power
adapter to the transmitter unit , and the green LED should light.
Please note that in most applications this PSU will be sufficient to power all the
SLX-TX800 functionality however, in some cases the HDMI source device needs
additional power when connecting via 1080p resolutions, in these cases the an
additional 5V PSU will need to be connected also into the SLX-TX800 (see later
diagram).
3.2 Then connect the Cat5* cable to the RJ45 Cat5* can be UTP or STP
and range from Cat5Cat8.
3.3 Next connect the transmitter unit to the source device (STB, Blu-Ray,
etc) via a standard HDMI cable, maximum recommended cable 5m.
-5-
Installation and Operation
-6-
3.4 Some HDMI connections do not include embedded S/P DIF
digital audio so we have included a separate connection to allow
this. Simply take the coaxial S/P DIF connection from you source
device and connect to the SLX-TX800 via the RCA. To enable
this feature slide the selector switch to the correct position
using a small screwdriver.
3.5 The SLX-800 system incorporates an infrared pass-through
facility to allow the remote control of the source device. To
enable this function connect an IR emitter (mono 3.5mm jack) to
the socket (available from smart-e SM-LED or as an industry
standard)
3.6 As previously stated most HDMI sources will provide sufficient
power for the HDMI receiver circuitry however, in some cases it
will be necessary to connect an additional 5V supply (5V-USB) to
the side connection on the SLX-TX800.
Installation and Operation
-7-
4. Receiver connectivity
The SLX-RX800 connects to the display (HD Ready TV, LCD panel, Plasma
etc.) via a standard HDMI cable.
Additional connectivity includes:
i) Separate S/P DIF output
ii) Infrared eye input for device control
iii) Infrared emitter output for display control
iv) RS232 full duplex connection for display control
v) Cat 5* connection to remote transmitter or matrix
vi) 5V PSU for HDMI connection
Installation and Operation of Receiver
-8-
5. Connecting the receiver
5.1 Turn the SLX-RX800 on by connecting the 5Vdc power
adapter to the receiver unit.
5.2 Next connect the receiver unit to the display HD Ready TV, LCD
panel, Plasma) via a standard HDMI cable, maximum
recommended cable 5m.
5.3 Connecting the Cat 5* cable
to the RJ45 socket should
light the green LED, verifying
the correct cable connection
to the SLX-TX800 transmitter
5.4 Cable compensation should
be performed whilst viewing
the image on a nearby display.
Adjustment works by turning
the dial in an anti-clockwise
direction for longer cable
lengths.
Please note over compensation will
result in a bright or no image.
Installation and Operation of Receiver
-9-
5.5 Some HDMI connections do not include embedded S/P DIF
digital audio so we have included a separate connection to allow
this. Simply take the coaxial S/P DIF connection from the
SLX-RX800 via the RCA connector and feed it to a S/P DIF
decoder.
5.6 The SLX-800 system incorporates an infrared pass-through
facility to allow the remote control of the source device.
To enable this function connect an IR eye (stereo 3.5mm jack) to
the socket (available from smart-e SM-EYEN).
Please note the IR emitter and RS232 connections are only available
when the receiver is connected to a smartmix matrix

6. Preparing and connecting System CAT-5 cable
The SmartLynx utilises category 5 (CAT 5), unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable to
transport signal between transmitter and receiver.
CAT 5 cable is more desirable than coaxial cable due to its low cost and ease of
installation. This cable is used for LAN applications and is found in abundance, already
installed, in many buildings . The category 5 is a standard which establishes minimum
requirements for telecommunications cabling within a commercial building. The
standard covers various aspects of wiring including telecommunications outlets.
Following is the wiring standard for terminating CAT 5 cable using RJ 45 connector:
Pair 1 Pins 1 & 2
Pair 2 Pins 3 & 6
Pair 3 Pins 4 & 5
Pair 4 Pins 7 & 8
Connectors: RJ-45
Capacitance: 14 pf/ft (46.2 pf/m)
Conductor Gauge: 24 AWG
Impedance: 100 +/- 15 ohms

c) Check both green LED’s are lit on the transmitter and receiver. If not check 24V
PSU is connected to the SLX-TX800 and then check Cat 5* cable connections
d) Connect additional 5V USB style PSU into the SLX-TX800
Bright image?
a) Try adjusting the EQ dial down to 0m (i.e. fully clockwise) and then turn slowly
anti-clockwise for correct image
No audio on display?
a) Check audio slide switch is in the correct position switch, factory default is HDMI
