Magnetic Card Reader (MSR) installation guide - ProfitAge
Please note that Magnetic Card Reader is sometimes referenced as Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR)
The ProfitAge system supports two methods for connecting Magnetic Stripe Reader
(MSR), the selection between the two methods is made according to the MSR device you
have:
OPOS Standard – Industry wide standard for Retail hardware connectivity. MSR
device which supports OPOS can be used only by OPOS compliant applications
(Profit age is fully OPOS compliant and so can use OPOS devices)
PS2 interface (Keyboard wedge) – The MSR device emulates standard keyboard
key presses, The MSR device can be configured to add pre-defined keys before
and after the scanned magnetic card data – This will allow the application to
identify the data as coming from the MSR and not from the keyboard.
For instruction on programming you device to transmit prefix and suffix please refer
to your hardware user guide.
In order to use PS2 interface MSR device with ProfitAge, a prefix and suffix must be
defined in the device.

Recommended MSR programming:
Connecting a PS2 MSR device
1. Turn of the computer
2. Unplug the keyboard cable (PS2) and connect one of the MSR device cables
instead (only one of the two MSR cables will fit the PC socket)
If the Keyboard is currently connected to a barcode scanner, connect the MSR
device to the PC socket and than connect the un-plugged scanner cable to the
free cable of the MSR device.
3. Connect the keyboard to the free cable of the MSR device (or the barcode
scanner is used)
Connecting PS2 MSR
4. Turn on the computer and verify the keyboard is working by pressing the Num-
Lock key and confirming a led turning on and/off.

5. Start the ProfitAgeTools application and select ToolsKeys Viewer from the
menu:
6. In the Keys Viewer window, swipe and magnetic card containing digits only.
The tool will identify the prefix/suffix chars and display them on the bottom of the
window:
7. Close the Keys Viewer windows and select ToolsManage configuration from
the menu:
8. Select the database to which the ProfitAge application is connected and press
the Connect button. (See ProfitAge.ini to determine the database in use)
9. In the Configuration Parameters form, select the terminal (POS, Back-Office or
Weighing Point) you with to setup the device to.
In the Search field below, enter the value ‘MSR’ and press the [Search] button
The tool will display a list of all parameters containing the value ‘MSR’ in the
‘Search Results’ list:
10. Double click the ‘MSR Prefix (1074)’ parameter and than double click the
selected parameter in the ‘Parameters’ list.
In the ‘Parameter editing’ dialog, enter the value previously displayed as prefix
in the Keys Viewer window.
Comma separator is used if the prefix is combined from more than one character
11. Change the configuration also for the same for the MSR suffix.
Close the dialog using OK button.
12. Click "Save" to save configuration
Install OPOS MSR
1. Install OPOS configuration tool supplied by the MSR manufacturer
2. Install the MSR using the OPOS configuration tool
3. Run ProfitAgeTools and enter configuration manager: ToolsManage
Configuration:
4. Choose database to connect
5. Set parameter "MSR Mode" to "OPOS"
6. Set parameter "MSR Name" to the device name defined in the OPOS
configuration tool.
7. Save the configuration by clicking the "Save" button
