1 Prepare for installation
Safety recommendations
To avoid possible bodily injury and equipment damage, read the
following safety recommendations before installing an H3C S5120-EI
series. Note that the recommendations do not cover every possible
hazardous condition.
z Turn off all power and remove all the power cables before
opening the chassis. Before cleaning, unplug the power plug first
and do not clean with a wet cloth or liquid.
z Keep the chassis clean and dust-free and away from water or a
damp environment; do not place on an unstable case or desk.
z Ensure proper ventilation of the equipment room and keep the
ventilation vents of the switch free of obstruction.
z Make sure that the operating voltage is the same as labeled on
the switch.
z When replacing interface modules, wear ESD-preventive gloves
to avoid damaging the cards.
For more compliance and safety information, see “Appendix
Compliance and safety information
”.
Examine the installation site
The H3C S5120-EI series can only be used indoors. Make sure that
the floor can support the weight of the cabinet and the switch chassis.
1-2
To ensure the normal operation of the switch, ensure that the
following elements meet requirements described in “Preparing for
installation” in the S5120-EI Installation Manual: temperature/
humidity, cleanness, electromagnetic susceptibility and laser safety.

Installation tools
The following tools are required for installation; they are not shipped
with the S5120-EI series. Please prepare them by yourself.

2 Install the switch
This guide provides basic installation steps. See the S5120-EI
Installation Manual for comprehensive procedures for installing the
switch.
Inspect the switch
Follow these steps before installing an S5120-EI switch:
z Make sure that you have read “Prepare for installation” carefully
and that the installation site meets all the requirements.
z Using the packing list that was supplied with your switch, inspect
the switch to be sure that you have all the items listed in the
packing list, and verify that the switch was not damaged during
shipment. If anything is damaged or missing, contact your H3C
customer representative.

Using front and rear mounting brackets
Before installation, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and make
sure that the wrist strap has a good skin contact and is well grounded.

2-3
There are three positions to mount a load-bearing screw on both
sides of a switch. You should select a proper position according to the
actual requirements. The rear mounting brackets tightly contacted
with the load-bearing screws can support the switch.
Mounting the switch on a workbench
In many cases, standard 19-inch racks are not available. Therefore,
switches are often placed on clean workbenches. To place your
switch on a workbench, you simply need to:
z Make sure that the workbench is clean, flat, and sturdy.
z Make sure that the environment is well ventilated and allows 10
cm (3.94 in.) of space around the chassis for heat dissipation.
z Do not place heavy objects on your switch.
z The vertical distance between two switches must be at least 1.5
cm (0.59 in).

Connecting the grounding cable
Figure 2-4 Connecting the grounding cable
z Use the PGND cable provided with the switch to connect the
grounding strip in the equipment room. Otherwise, the grounding
effect may not be ensured, which easily causes damage to the
switch.
z If no grounding strip is available, see S5120-EI Installation
Manual for detailed grounding methods.
2-5
Connecting the power cable
z Before connecting the power cable, connect the grounding cable
and make sure that the switch is correctly grounded.
z Connect the power cable to the switch first and then to the power
supply system to avoid bodily injury.
z You can use only the RPS power supply recommended by H3C
(optional RPS power supply and power cable) for RPS input.

z Do not touch the electronic components on an interface card to
avoid damaging the interface card.
z After removing an interface card, install a blank panel to the
empty slot to prevent dust from entering the switch.
z If there is a ”DO NOT REMOVE” label on the rear panel, the
switch does not support interface cards. Do not remove the blank
panel that has the label on it.
