1 ASD-211i/2D NTSC/PAL to 4:2:2 Adaptive Decoder
1.1 Introduction
The ASD-211i/2D is a multi-standard decoder converting analog composite video to
4:2:2 serial digital video. This decoder supports composite NTSC-M, PAL-B,G,H,I,
PAL-M, and PAL-N standards. The ASD-211i/2D is a 10-bit fully digital decoder
implementing a 2-D adaptive comb filter producing optimal picture quality with
virtually no cross-color or cross-luma artifacts. All four 4:2:2 serial digital video
signals respect the SMPTE 259M-C standard. Also, the serial digital video outputs
carry EDH data according to the SMPTE RP165 standard.
The ASD-211i/2D is a member of the imaging family of digital video modules and
therefore requires the imaging Quartet, imaging Quartet-C, Symphonie or imaging

3.2 Input Status Monitoring
During automatic input detection (AUTO LED on), the following LEDs provide status
on the composite input signal. When forced mode is on (AUTO LED off), the
following LEDs indicate the selected format. For information on the various
detection modes refer to section 3.3, Input Detection Modes.
NTSC During automatic input detection, this LED turns on to indicate the
ASD-211i/2D has detected a NTSC composite signal connected to
NTSC/PAL IN.
PAL During automatic input detection, this LED turns on to indicate the
ASD-211i/2D has detected a PAL-B,G,H,I composite signal
connected to NTSC/PAL IN.
PAL-M During automatic input detection, this LED turns on to indicate the
ASD-211i/2D has detected a PAL-M composite signal connected to
NTSC/PAL IN.
PAL-N During automatic input detection, this LED turns on to indicate the
ASD-211i/2D has detected a PAL-N composite signal connected to
NTSC/PAL IN.
B&W The B&W LED, located within the set of INPUT LEDs, will turn on
when the ASD-211i/2D has detected a composite signal with no
color burst.
ERR The ERR (error) LED will turn on if no input composite signal is
installed. Also, if a standard is forced, say, PAL and the input signal
detected is other than a PAL signal, the ERR LED will turn on or it
may flash. Make sure the composite input signal is properly
connected to NTSC/PAL IN and verify for any source equipment
errors.
9
3.3 Input Detection Modes
The ASD-211i/2D supports two modes of detection: automatic input detection and
forced input selection.
3.3.1 Automatic Input Detection
During this mode of detection, the ASD-211i/2D detects the type of input and
automatically switches to that format by loading the decoder with the format’s
parameters. To enable automatic input detection, follow these steps:
1. From the main menu, press SELECT to enable the STD-INPUT menu.
2. To set automatic detection, use the UP(+) or DOWN(-) push-button to move to
the AUTO LED. Automatic detection is ready for selection when AUTO flashes.
3. Press SELECT to store the mode of detection.
4. To return to the main menu, press SELECT until there is no more flashing LED.
3.3.2 Forced Input Selection
This mode allows you to select one of the input formats. During this mode of
operation, the ASD-211i/2D remains configured with the format selected at all times
regardless of the input signal’s format. If the input signal’s format is other than that
selected, the ERR LED will turn on or it may flash. This feature is handy when you
are certain that the input format will not change. To select the forced input for
forced input detection, follow these steps:
1. From the main menu, press SELECT to enable the STD-INPUT menu.
2. To force an input format, use the UP(+) or DOWN(-) push-button to select
between NTSC, PAL, PAL-M, or PAL-N. During forced input selection, the
AUTO LED remains off.
3. Press SELECT to store the mode of detection and the forced input format.
4. To return to the main menu, press SELECT until there is no more flashing LED.
NOTE: During automatic input detection, if the input signal changes while you
are attempting to change the value of a menu function, the ASD-211i/2D exits
from the menu, returns to normal and attempts to locate the correct format.
However, the ASD-211i/2D will not exit the menu if an input format is forced.
10
3.4 Decoding Filter
The ASD-211i/2D provides several types of decoding filters, as shown in figures
below. The selection of the filter will depend highly on the nature of the input
composite video. Generally, optimal decoding is obtained with 3-line or 2-line filters.
For key and monochrome inputs, select 2-line and B&W filters respectively. The
simplest way to choose a decoding filter is to pass through each one and compare
their performances with the intended source.
Figure 3.3 NTSC decoding selection
Figure 3.4 PAL-B,G,H,I,M,N decoding selection
To select a decoding filter follow these steps:
1. From the main menu, press SELECT twice to enable the DECODING menu.
2. Use the UP(+) or DOWN(-) push-button to select the desired decoder. Figures
3.3 and 3.4 describe the decoder selection sequence for the NTSC and PAL-
B,G,H,I,M,N formats respectively.
3. Press SELECT to store the selected decoder for the current format.
4. To return to the main menu, press SELECT until there is no more flashing LED.
NOTE:

3.5 Automatic Input Calibration
The ASD-211i/2D can perform automatic input calibration reassuring properly
quantized 4:2:2 output signals. This is accomplished by monitoring the pixel value
within the region of the white bar of a color bars input signal. For a 100% color bars
input, the pixel value of white must be 940. If the ASD-211i/2D reads a value other
than 940, it will amplify or attenuate the input signal accordingly. It will repeat this
procedure until 940 is read. To perform input calibration follow these steps:
1. Install a 75% or 100% color bars signal to NTSC/PAL IN.
2. From the main menu, press SELECT three times to enter the CALIB menu.
During this time, the CALIB LED flashes.
3. Press UP(+) or DOWN(-) to begin calibration. The INPUT CALIB LED flashes
quickly as the ASD-211i/2D performs input calibration.
4. If the calibration is successful, the ASD-211i/2D automatically enters the SETUP
menu. To return to the main menu, press SELECT until there is no more flashing
LED. If the ASD-211i/2D failed to properly calibrate the input, the flashing rate
returns to normal and the menu remains in CALIB. Verify your installation and
make sure there is 75 ohm termination on the NTSC/PAL IN loop-through output.
Repeat step 3.
NOTE: The luminance and chrominance gains are reset to a gain of 1 after a
calibration execution. Also, the horizontal phase (position) is centered.
12
3.6 Setup
A setup range of -15 IRE to +15 IRE may be added to or removed from the input
signal in increments of 0.2 IRE. At all times, the selected setup should be equal to
the setup present on the input signal. When 7.5 IRE setup is selected, the 7.5 LED
is on and when a 0 IRE setup is selected, the 0 LED is on. However, both LEDs are
off if the setup is set to a value that is not 0 nor 7.5 IRE.
Follow these steps to set the setup:
1. From the main menu, press SELECT four times to enter the SETUP menu.

NOTE: Normally, V ANC should not be set to USER if there is no ICP-S
