Danfoss S42 P is a reliable and efficient pump designed for industrial applications. It features a lip type shaft seal that can be replaced without major disassembly of the unit. A lip type shaft seal is used in Series 42 pumps. This seal is retained within a seal carrier and, combined with the

lip seal, make up the shaft seal/carrier assembly. The shaft seal/carrier assembly can be replaced without major

disassembly of the unit. However, the replacement of the shaft seal/carrier assembly does require that the pump

be removed from the machine.

Removal of the Shaft Seal/Carrier Assembly

1) Position the pump such that the pump’s input shaft is facing

up.

2) Remove the internal retaining ring from the housing, using

a standard screwdriver, or similar tool. The retaining ring

can be removed by “spiraling” the ring out of the housing,

once the leading edge is pried free.

3) Remove the shaft seal/carrier assembly from the housing

by prying the assembly out with the aid of a standard

screwdriver, or similar tool.

4) Remove the O-ring from the shaft seal/carrier assembly.

Note that the O-ring may still be within the pump, in which

case it will be located on top of the shaft’s front bearing.

Installation of the Shaft Seal/Carrier Assembly

1) Lubricate the new O-ring with a petroleum based lubricant

and place into the pump cavity on top of the shaft’s front

bearing. Make sure that the O-ring makes contact with

the entire bearing surface so as to avoid damage occurring

to the O-ring upon the installation of the shaft seal/carrier

assembly.

2) Wrap the spline or key end of the shaft with thin plastic in

order to prevent damage to the lip seal during installation.

3) Lubricate the inside diameter of the shaft seal with a

petroleum-based lubricant.

4) Install the shaft seal/carrier assembly by sliding the shaft

seal/carrier assembly over the shaft, taking care not to

damage the lip seal. Press the shaft seal/carrier assembly

into the housing so that the internal retaining ring groove

is visible above the shaft seal/carrier assembly.

5) Install the new internal retaining ring into the housing by

ﬁrst inserting the trailing end of the ring and “spiraling” the

ring into its machined groove within the housing.

6) Remove the plastic used to protect the lip seal during

installation.
