1 Preface
This software gives you the possibility to communicate with the Danfoss ECL 2000
regulator for heating regulation. You can read and write data to the device, and you
can log data to control the functionality of your heating system and your ECL 2000
regulator. This program makes it easier for you to set up the ECL 2000 parameters as
best as possible.
This manual is separated into the following chapters:

3 Installation
3.1 Installation from 1.44 Mb-disk
The program is self-extracting. Insert the first disk into your disk drive. Run the file
Install.exe” and follow the instructions on the screen.
3.2 Installation from Hard-disk
Make sure, that all installation files are in the same directory. This can be any direc-
tory of your choice. Run the file Install.exe” and follow the instructions on the
screen.
3.3 Further Installation Requirements
After the ECL 2000 Service Program is installed, a second installation routine starts
automatically. This is the “Run Time Engine”, which is necessary to run the ECL
2000 Service Program. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The ECL 2000 Service Program will create a shortcut in the taskbar of your PC.
If the program is not running correctly, check if DCOM for Windows 95 is installed
on your PC in case of using Windows 95 as your operating system.
DCOM is a program supporting the COM-Port of your PC. Install DCOM after the
ECL 2000 Service Program from the subdirectory DCOM. This directory will be
created as a subdirectory “Dcom” after you have installed the ECL 2000 Service
Program.
Run the file "Dcom95.exe" and follow the instructions on the screen.
If you want to read or print this document, you have to install the Acrobat Reader
program. You can find the program at
http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html. This program is license free
and can be used to open PDF-documents.

3.4 Connecting the ECL 2000 to your Computer
The ECL 2000 Service Pack contains a cable to connect the ECL 2000 to your com-
puter. One cable end leads to the ECL 2000, the other to an unused Com-Port of your
PC.
Before you can connect the cable to the ECL 2000, you have to remove the plastic
covering from the ECL 2000. Put a small screwdriver under the right edge of the
plastic covering and push it to the right side. Figure 1and Figure 2 show you how to
do it.

4 Using the Program
After installing the program you will have several subfolders in the directory where
you have installed the ECL 2000 Service Program.
The structure is shown below:
Drive:\.....\ECL2000
è Base
è Data
è Dcom
è Program
è Routines
è Run Time
You can use the shortcut “ECL 2000” in your taskbar to start the program, or open
the directory where you have installed the program with the Windows Explorer. In
this directory there will be a subfolder named "Program". Open the folder and run
the file "ECL 2000.exe". The program will start now.
4.1 Program Start
4.1.1 Program Information
The first window (Figure 3) will appear for 2 seconds after you have started the pro-
gram. It gives you information about the version and the serial number of the pro-
gram. The window will close automatically.

4.1.2 Program Mode
The program offers two modes, a user mode and a professional mode. In the next
window (Figure 4) you have to select the mode you want to use. If you are a cus-
tomer (user) of the ECL 2000, please select the user-mode. The professional mode is
only for members of the Danfoss A/S company. If you select the professional mode,
it is possible to change some settings in the ECL 2000 that causes your ECL 2000 to
stop working.
Figure 4: Program mode
When you have selected the user-mode, click on "File" and choose "Save and exit".
Now the program is running in the user mode. If you want to run the professional
mode, change with the mouse to “Professional mode”.
When you have changed to “Professional mode”, a window pops up and ask you for
a password. Type in the correct password and choose “Check password” from the
pull-down menu “Password”. If the password is correct, the program will continue in
professional mode. If you don’t know the correct password, choose “Exit” from the
pull-down menu. You will get back to figure 2, and the user mode will be displayed.
Figure 3 shows the window for the input of the password.
Figure 3: Password
The difference in the user mode and the professional mode is primarily that you are
able to write data to the ECL 2000 regulator in professional mode. In the user mode,
you are just able to read data from the ECL 2000 regulator.

4.1.3 COM-Port Set up
The ECL 2000 Service Program is communicating over the serial port of your com-
puter with the ECL 2000 regulator. Therefore you have to select a serial port of your
computer. The next window will ask you to select the COM-Port of your PC-system
(Figure 4).
Maybe the mouse of your system is connected to a Com-port. In this case, connect
the ECL 2000 to another COM-Port and select the belonging port number in the pro-
gram. Four Com-Ports are available in the program. After selecting the right COM-
Port, use under "File" the setting for "Save and exit". Now the program will open the
serial port of your computer.
If you only choose "Exit" the program will not open the port. The execution of
"Close serial port" will close the COM-Port. You can also open this window from
the main menu (see chapter 4.2). This means, that you can change the setting while
the program is running. This will be necessary, if you want to use the COM-Port with
another program while the ECL 2000 Service program is running.
Figure 4: COM-Port set up
After this procedure, you are in the main menu of the program.
4.2 Main Menu
Now you have reached the main part of the program. There are several possibilities
you can start from, for example reading data, writing data, logging data, etc.
After a successful set up of the serial port, the ECL 2000 Service Program will check
the connection to your ECL 2000 regulator. You will get a warning message, if the
connection is not established. In this case, you have to check the connection. You can
run the check as long as you have established a connection, or you can end the pro-
gram. When the connection is established, the ECL 2000 Service Program reads
some basic data from the regulator. You will see them in the main window of the
program.

4.2.1 The “Setup” Menu: “Com Port”
The first entry in the “Setup” menu is “Com Port”. If you select this menu, you will
get the window for the serial port set up (Figure 4). When the program is running,
you have already set up your serial port. You can use this menu, when you want to
use the serial port with another program without closing the ECL 2000 Service Pro-
gram. This function is already described in chapter 4.1.3.
4.2.2 The “Setup” Menu: “ECL info”
If you select the entry “ECL info”, the program reads again the basic information
from the ECL 2000 regulator. This could be necessary, when you switch over to an-
other application while the program is running. The ECL 2000 Service Program is
using this information for following actions. If you switch the active application of
the ECL 2000 regulator while the program is running, you have to update the pro-
gram by running the “ECL info” entry.
4.2.3 The “Setup” Menu: “Filename”
If you are going to log any data from the ECL 2000 regulator, it is necessary to give
a file name to the program where this data should be saved. By choosing the entry
Filename”, the window below (Figure 6) will appear.
Figure 6: File set up
There are several fields in this window where you can enter information about your
measurement. The program gives you a suggestion for a filename. It contains the cur-
rent date and a number for the number of your measurement. If you do not agree, it is
up to you to give a new file name.
Page

Doc. No.
VI74L202
Note! Do not use any extension in the file name like “19-01-99_01.XXX”. The pro-
gram will give an ending itself. Also do not use any special characters like $ or @ in
the file name. You will run the risk of loosing all data in your measurement.
The date and time in the following fields are given automatically by the program and
cannot be changed. If these entries are not correct, please correct the time and date in
the Windows Control Panel.
All other fields are free of choice. You can type in any information you want. It will
be saved in the data file. The field remark can be used to note special conditions, for
example like the place of measurement, a special set up of the ECL 2000 regulator
like flow- or energymeter.
You close the window by choosing “File” and “Save and exit”. If you want to leave
this menu without doing any changes choose “Cancel”.
Note! If a file where the selected name already exists, you will get a warning mes-
sage. In this case, you can replace the file, or you can go back to the “File Setup
window and enter another file name.
If you want to make a measurement over more than one day, the program will create
a new file at midnight by itself. The current filename will be increased with a num-
ber.
Example:
Original filename at start: Data_07-11-99
Next day: Data_07-11-99_01
Next day: Data_07-11-99_02

You will be automatically in the data folder of the directory where you have installed
the ECL 2000 Service Program. Choose a file and press “Open”. The data file will be
loaded and shown in the graph. The data file information will be displayed below the
datagraph. In the down-right corner there is a palette which you can use to zoom the
graph or to change the scaling of the axes from the graph to automatically fit.
Figure 7 shows the palette and its functions.
Figure 7: Palette
Select “Print” from the “File” pull-down menu to print the datagraph on a printer.
Choose “Exit” to close this menu. You will get back to the main menu of the ECL
2000 Service Program.
4.2.5 The “Setup” Menu: “Exit”
By choosing the entry “Exit” from the main menu, the program will shut down.
4.2.6 The “Selftest” Menu: “Run full selftest”
This menu is not implemented in the 1.1 version of the ECL 2000 Service Program.
4.2.7 The “Selftest” Menu: “Short test”
This menu is not implemented in the 1.1 version of the ECL 2000 Service Program.
4.2.8 The “Datalogging” Menu: “Create parameterlist”
This menu is only available if you are running the program in the professional mode.
It is used to select the parameters you want to log, if you are going to make a data-
logging sequence. If you are in the user mode of the program, it is not necessary to
select parameters, the program will automatically do it for you. If you are going to
select the log-parameters manually, it is necessary to know the program structure of
the ECL 2000 regulator. Contact Danfoss A/S for further information. The window
of the “Create parameterlist” window is shown in Figure 8.

With the “Functionblock” pull-down menu, you can select the kind of block where
you want to retrieve data. The “Blocknumber” pull-down menu selects the number of
the block. The “Parameter” pull-down menu selects the available parameters in the
selected functionblock. With the buttons “Add >>” and “<< Remove” you can build
up your parameterlist. If you want to remove a parameter, you have to set the cursor
in the line, which should be removed. Press the “<< Remove” button afterwards.
If you want to delete all parameters in the list, press the “Clear list” button.
The max. number of parameters is 20.
Close the window by selecting Save and exit” in the File” menu. Now the
parameterlist will be available for the datalogging menu.
If you do not want to save your settings, use “Cancel” instead.
It is also possible to save the parameterlist in a file. Thus you can use the same
parameterlist when you are going to use the program another time. In the “Routine
menu choose “Safe routine”. A window will open and ask you for a file name of your
routine. It will automatically be in the subfolder “Routines” of your ECL directory.
Enter a file name. This time you should also give an extension. The extension should
be “.txt” . Now you can always reload the routine, when you want to use the program
later, by choosing “Load routine” from the “Routine” pull-down menu.

4.2.9 The “Datalogging” Menu: “Start datalogging”
This menu starts the datalogging. Before you start this menu by selecting “Start da-
talogging” from the main menu, be sure that you have given a valid filename in the
menu “Filename”. If the program is in professional mode, you also have to select
some parameters in the menu “Create parameterlist” before you start the acquisition.
When you have started the menu “Start datalogging”, Figure 9 pops up, and asks you
for the scan rate. The default scan rate is 2 scans per minute.
Figure 9: Scan rate
The fastest scan rate depends on the number of parameters. Scanrates, which are not
available because of a large number of parameters, are greyed out. Choose “Save and
exit” to continue or “Cancel” to go back to the main menu.
If you have pressed “Save and exit”, the datalogging window will appear. You can
see the incoming data in a table or in a graph. Figure 10 and Figure 11 show the look
of the window. In the menubar you can switch between the two views by selecting
Display” and then “Graph” or “Table”.

If you are looking at the data in the graph mode, you can see a palette in the down-
right corner of the window. This palette can be used to autoscale the graph, or to
make a zoom. The functionality of the palette is already described in the print menu.
It is also possible to change the scale manually if you mark the max. or min. values
on the axis and type in a new value.
If you want to stop the data acquisition, choose “Logging” and Stop datalog”. It
could take up to 30 seconds, before the program stops the datalog. This will happen
when the program is carrying out a datalog at this moment. The program will termi-
nate, when the current measurement is finished.
4.2.10 The “Datalogging” Menu: “Full download”
The menu “Full download” is a function, which downloads all parameters of the cur-
rent active application. This function can be used, when the ECL 2000 regulator
seems to work not correctly. You can send such a full-download file and an error de-
scription to the Danfoss A/S company. The Danfoss A/S company will analyse this
file and inform you if you have wrong settings in your ECL 2000 regulator. Figure
12 shows the window of the “Full download” function.

4.2.11 The “Datalogging” Menu: “Log today/yesterday”
The ECL 2000 will automatically log the temperature data from the current day and
the day before. You can see these data in the display of the ECL 2000 and you can
download these data with the ECL 2000 Service Program.
When you select “Log today/yesterday”, Figure 13 will appear.
Figure 13: Log today/yesterday
Choose “Read data” from the “File” pull-down menu to read the ECL 2000 data.
This will take several seconds. You will see the data from the temperature
transducers S1 to S8 on the two graphs. With “Save data” from the “File” menu, you
can save these data to a file. Save the data file as a normal text file with the extension
“.txt”. You can easily import this datafile to EXCEL, because the data format is
ASCII with tabulator separation. Exit the menu by selecting “Exit” from the “File
menu.

4.2.12 The ”Data” Menu: “Read single data
The menu “Read single data” is only available if the program runs in professional
mode. It is nearly the same procedure as in the menu “Create parameterlist”. The
difference is that you can read single parameters of the ECL 2000 immediately.
When you call the menu “Read single parameter”, Figure 14 will appear.
Figure 14: Read single data menu
As in the Create Parameterlist” menu, you can select a functionblock, a
blocknumber and a corresponding parameter (Function). With a click on Read
value” you get the current actual value in the display. You can clear the display by a
click on “Clear”. You can save the actions you are carrying out, if you select “Log
data” from the pull-down menu under “Setup”. The program will use the actual file
name, but with a different extension as in the “Datalogging” menu. The extension for
files created in this menu is “.log”. The data format is ASCII, so you can later open
the file in a editor program and check your work.
If you want to change a parameter, select “Write parameter” in the pull-down menu
Write”. If you do so, the window described under chapter 4.2.13 will appear (Figure
15). You can close the menu by selecting “Exit” from the pull-down menu “Setup”.
