International Business Machines Corporation and Brocade LLC have successfully completed qualification testing, of zHPF
®
(High
Performance FICON), FICON
®
and FCP protocols, using the switches and directors in Table 1 with FOS 8.2.2c in the configurations in
Table 2, for the following IBM Z family hardware platforms: IBM z15 models T01 (z15 T01) and T02 (z15 T02)
h
, z14(z14) and IBM z14
Model ZR1 (z14 ZR1), IBM z13
®
(z13) and IBM z13s
®
(z13s), and for the following IBM LinuxONE platforms: LinuxOne III models LT1 and
LT2, LinuxOne Emperor II, LinuxOne Emperor, LinuxOne Rockhopper II, and
LinuxOne
Rockhopper.
Brocade Network Advisor 14.4.5 was used as the management tool during the qualification testing.

a. The Extended Long Wavelength (ELWL) optic versions for speeds up to 32 Gbps are also supported up to a distance of 25 km.
b. The FC32-64, FC16-64 and FC8-64 are supported for FCP use only, and are not supported in the same logical switch as FICON traffic.
c. 16Gbps QSFPs (both the 50m and 100m versions) are supported on both the FC16-64 blade and ICLs. 2km QSFPs are supported on ICL’s only.
d. 32 Gbps QSFPs can only connect to other 32 Gbps QSFPs.
e. The SmartOptics 16Gbps 40km DWDM SFP+ (P/N: 16G-ER-Dxxx-BR2) can be used in conjunction with the SmartOptics M-Series Intelligent Multiplexer (M-1601).
See Note 3 below.
f. Direct connections between IBM Z FICON adapters and Brocade 32 Gbps Optics were tested at speeds of 16Gbps and 8Gbps since there are currently no
32 Gbps IBM Z adapters. Links running at 32 Gbps links were only tested over ISLs and ICLs between Brocade Gen6 Directors/switches.

g. QSFPs in the G620 switch are only supported for QSFP connections to other G620 QSFPs, they cannot be used for ICL connections to Gen5 or Gen6 chassis.

Restrictions and Switch
Descriptions:
Extension(A):
Extension switch 7840 or 7800, or extension blade FX8-24E or FX8-24.
Extension switch 7840 must only be connected to another 7840 or an SX6 extension blade for IP extension.
Extension(B):
Extension switch 7840 or 7800, or extension blade FX8-24E or FX8-24.
Extension switch 7840 must only be connected to another 7840 or an SX6 extension blade for IP extension.
Switch & IP connections only. No device or channel connections.
Switch(A):
May be any switch in
Table
1.
Switch(B)
b
:
May be X6-8 or X6-4
May be 8510-8 or 8510-4
May be DCX or DCX-4S
Switch(C):
May be X6-8 or X6-4
May be 8510-8 or 8510-4
a. This configuration is also supported as a triangle configuration. All Directors in a triangle configuration must be of the same family (all Gen5 or all Gen6).
b. ICL connections are fiber on Gen5 and Gen6 directors (X6-8, X6-4, 8510-8 and 8510-4) and therefore cannot be connected to Gen4 directors (DCX and DCX-4S)
which use copper ICLs.
FICON Release Notes
Although the distances for the protocols supported for these switches, FICON, FCP, FCIP, and ISLs, have been successfully
tested to a distance of 300km, IBM requires an Extended Distance RPQ for IBM Z and for LinuxOne to assure applications
greater than 100km adhere to the bounds of our qualification.
The new supported hardware features in this release are:
32 Gbps 25KM Extended Long Wavelength (ELWL) optic
The new supported features and functions in this release are:
Fibre Channel Endpoint Security
The supported routing modes for FICON are:
Exchanged Base Routing (EBR) with FICON Dynamic Routing (see Note 5 below)
Device Base Routing (DBR)
Port Based Routing (PBR)
Please refer to the Brocade Fabric OS v8.2.2c Release Notes v1.0 (or the latest available version) and see section

“Appendix: Additional Considerations for FICON Environments” for additional requirements, restrictions, and
recommendations.
Notes and Recommendations:
1. The IBM Z and IBM LinuxOne supported FOS upgrade path to 8.2.2c for Gen5 and Gen6 is from 8.2.2a, 8.2.0a, 8.1.2a, or
8.1.0c.
2. The High Integrity Fabric feature is required for proper operation with FICON channels; therefore, it is recommended that
customers verify HIF is enabled upon upgrade to FOS 7.3.0b or higher. If HIF is not enabled, FICON channels will go into an
Invalid Attach state after a channel or port event occurs that requires the channels to log in.
3. Use of SmartOptics may require users to make changes to their MAPs policies. For details on the SmartOptics
implementation with Gen5 and Gen6 products Please refer to the FICON Appendix of the Brocade Fabric OS v8.2.0a Release
Notes v1.0 (or the latest available version).
4. For more information regarding use of FICON multihop, requirements and supported configurations, please refer to FICON
Multihop: Requirements and Configurations (WP102704) Whitepaper: https://www-

5. For more information regarding host and control unit requirements for use of FICON Dynamic Routing, please refer to
“FICON Dynamic Routing (FIDR): Technology and Performance Implications (WP102651)” whitepaper: http://www-
03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/WP102651
6. Brocade I/O Insight and Analytics Monitoring Platform (AMP) are supported in a Linux on z Systems environment. These
analytics capabilities are limited to FCP solutions only. Brocade AMP connectivity to an IBM Z FICON SAN Fabric is supported
for FCP solutions such as Linux for z Systems or IBM Metro Mirror.
