This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin mains plug for your safety and convenience.
A 13 amp fuse is fitted in this plug.
Should the fuse need to be replaced please ensure that the replacement fuse has a rating of 13 amps and that it is approved by
ASTA or BSI to BS1362.
Check for the ASTA mark or the BSI mark on the body of the fuse.
If the plug contains a removable fuse cover you must ensure that it is refitted when the fuse is replaced.
If you lose the fuse cover the plug must not be used until a replacement cover is obtained.
A replacement fuse cover can be purchased from your local Panasonic Dealer.
IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UNSUITABLE FOR THE SOCKET OUTLET IN YOUR HOME THEN THE FUSE SHOULD BE
REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF AND DISPOSED OF SAFELY.
THERE IS A DANGER OF SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF THE CUT OFF PLUG IS INSERTED INTO ANY 13 AMP SOCKET.
If a new plug is to be fitted please observe the wiring code as shown below.
If in any doubt please consult a qualified electrician.
IMPORTANT: The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Blue : Neutral
Brown : Live
As the colours of the wire in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the
terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter N or coloured
BLACK.
The wire which is coloured BROWN must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter L or coloured
RED.
Under no circumstances should either of these wires be connected to the earth terminal of the three pin plug, marked with the
letter E or the Earth Symbol
How to replace the Fuse:
There are two types of the supplied AC Mains Lead: A and B as shown below.
1. Open the fuse compartment with a screwdriver.
2. Replace the fuse and fuse cover if detachable.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Do not leave the vacuum cleaner plugged in to mains socket. Unplug from the socket when not in use and before cleaning the
appliance or undertaking maintenance operations.
This appliance is not intended for use by young children or infirm people without supervision; young children should be
supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
Do not use if the mains lead or mains plug is damaged. If the vacuum cleaner is not working as it should be, or has been
dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or come into contact with water, consult an authorised Panasonic Service Centre.
Do not pull or carry by the mains lead, use the mains lead as a handle, close a door on the mains lead, pull the mains lead
around sharp edges or corners. Do not run over the mains lead with the vacuum cleaner. Keep the mains lead away from
heated surfaces.
Do not run vacuum cleaner over tassels or fringes of rugs or mats.
Do not handle plug or vacuum cleaner with wet hands.
Do not put any object into openings. Do not use with any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair and anything that may
block or reduce air flow.
Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts.
Do not use without filters and / or dust compartment in place.
Turn off all controls before unplugging. Do not pull on the mains lead when disconnecting the vacuum cleaner from the mains,
pull on the plug body itself.
Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
Do not use to pick up flammable or combustible materials, or others that may become so or use in areas where they may be
present.
Do not let the vacuum cleaner pick up wet matter, burning ashes or large or sharp objects.
This appliance should be serviced by an authorised Panasonic Service Centre and only genuine Panasonic spare parts should
be used.
Keep feet, fingers and hands away from the beater bar. Also avoid putting them between cleaner bodies. (It may cause injury)
NOTE: This vacuum cleaner is designed for general household use only and is not suitable for use in a garage or to suck
up liquids.
Before using the vacuum cleaner, please read these basic precautions.

To unlock the handle of the cleaner, step on the pedal. To return into the upright position, simply put the handle back.

On hard floors / Using the accessories
IMPORTANT: Ensure the cleaner is switched ON before moving the Beater bar switch.
To prevent scratches or other damage to
hard floors, Linoleum, etc., slide the Beater
bar switch to the “STOP” position.
On carpeted floors
DO NOT leave the beater bar rotating in the same place for too long.
ATTENTION: Refer to your carpet manufacturers cleaning recommendations.
Some more delicate carpets and long pile carpets may require that they be
vacuumed with the Beater bar off, to prevent damage.

F) HOW TO USE THE ACCESSORIES
IMPORTANT: When using the accessories, keep the vacuum cleaner in the upright position and ensure that the cleaner
is switched ON before moving the Beater bar switch to the STOP position.
CAUTION:
While using the accessories, hold the handle with one hand
to avoid pulling the cleaner over.
On model MC-E470E to prevent damage to carpeted floors,
Linoleum, etc., tilt the cleaner back so that the cleaning
head is raised off the floor.
To avoid accidental injury, keep children away from the
beater bar while in operation.

brushing the dust off with a
soft brush.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before servicing any part, always DISCONNECT THE CLEANER FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY.

NOTE: The dust compartment may be washed with warm water.
DO NOT use detergents or other cleaning fluids to avoid deterioration of the plastic and the rubber seals.
DO NOT attempt to clean the dust compartment in a dishwasher.
IMPORTANT: Before re-assembling the dust compartment, ensure that it is completely dry and check that the rubber inner
seals are in place.

compartment cover by
pushing the tabs in and
lifting off.
Remove dust accumulated in the filter A and B by tipping them
against a hard surface. If dust remains on filter A, replace with
the spare or carry out further cleaning detailed on following
page.

NOTE: Under normal use, it is advisable to change the clean air filter once or twice a year.
CAUTION: Never attempt to wash the HEPA filter. Under normal usage it will not require replacement.
The central filter should be cleaned or
replaced when it becomes dirty.
To clean the filter, rinse it out in warm
water and dry it thoroughly before
replacing.

B) FILTER CARE
CAUTION
DO NOT use detergents or other cleaning fluids to clean the filters. They may deteriorate the plastic.
DO NOT use hot air or hot surface to dry the filters. Keep at room temperature for approximately 24 hours.
IMPORTANT: Before re-installing the washable filters, make sure they are completely dry to avoid damaging the cleaner.
Cleaning or Replacing the filters
NOTE: For ease of access to the filter maintenance, remove the dust compartment (see page 7).

C) BLOCKAGES
If your cleaner stops picking up dust while the dust compartment is not yet full, a blockage may have occurred in the hose
or suction pipe inlet. If necessary, remove the obstruction in the hose or suction pipe inlet as indicated.

CAUTION: Ensure the cleaner is DISCONNECTED from the mains supply before any beater bar maintenance.

E) SERVICING AND REPAIRS
We always recommend the use of genuine Panasonic replacement parts.
To replace any of the following parts, place the cleaner in the horizontal position by using the pedal and turn it over exposing the
underside.
CAUTION: Before replacing any part DISCONNECT THE CLEANER FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY.
Release the belt from the motor shaft and
lift the beater bar assembly to remove the
belt.
To re-assemble, place the belt around
the motor shaft and around the beater
bar pulley.
Insert the beater bar mounts into their
housings, then turn the beater bar by
hand to ensure that the belt has been
seated correctly.
IMPORTANT: On model MC-E470E,
when installing the belt, make sure
it is placed between the screw and
the inside cover rib, as indicated.
Re-fit the base plate and replace the
screws.
Remove the 4 screws from the base
plate and lift it off.

F) TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
TROUBLE CHECK POINT CAUSE / REMEDY
Motor fails to rotate
(no noise is heard at all).
Thermal Cut-out
This vacuum cleaner is fitted a thermal cut-out device which automatically turns off the cleaner to prevent overheating of the
motor. When this happens, disconnect the cleaner from the mains socket and check the dust compartment as it may be full
or clogged with fine dust. Check for any other obstructions.
After emptying the dust compartment or removing the obstruction, leave the vacuum cleaner to cool down until the thermal
cut-out resets after approximately 40 minutes.
Important: The thermal cut-out will not reset if the unit is not disconnected from the mains socket.
Mains lead
IMPORTANT: If the mains lead becomes damaged, it must be repaired by Panasonic, or an authorised Service Centre or a
qualified person in order to avoid any hazard.

Motor runs but there is
no suction.
Check dust mark.

Check hose is properly inserted to
the suction pipe inlet.
Hose inlet is blocked.
If it shows full, empty the dust compartment.
If the pre-filter is full of dust, clean it or replace.
Remove dust accumulated or replace the filter. (See FILTER CARE)
If central filter is full of dust, clean or replace it. (See FILTER CARE)
Re-insert the hose to suction pipe inlet correctly.
If there is a blockage, remove it.
Beater bar does not
rotate.
Clogged by a large object in
the beater bar housing.
Belt broken or loose.
Check beater bar switch is
correctly positioned
(except MC-E470E).
If there is any obstruction, remove it.
If the belt is broken, replace it. If loose re-install it again.
Place the beater bar switch to the appropriate position.
