Get Your Device Ready
Make Sure the SIM Card Is Inserted
Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is
inserted into the phone’s SIM card holder. You
should never need to remove or insert the SIM
card. If you need to do so, please see the
phone’s User Guide.
1. Press the battery door latch and lift and remove
the battery door.
2. Ensure that a SIM card is inserted in the slot
above the battery.
If no SIM card came with your phone, contact
Sprint Customer Service at 1-800-639-6111.
Insert the Battery
With the battery door removed (see step 1
above), insert the battery into the battery
compartment and gently press down until it
clicks into place.
Insert the microSD Card
1. With the battery door removed (see step 1 to the
left), open the memory card slot cover and slide
in the microSD card until it clicks into place.
2. Close the memory card slot cover and replace
the battery door, pressing down firmly to ensure
it is properly secured.
Charge the Battery
1. Pull open the rubber cover over the micro USB
connector on the right side of the phone.
2. Plug the small flat end of the USB cable into the
phones micro USB connector.
3. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the wall
socket connector and plug the wall socket
connector into an outlet.
Activate Your Phone
If you bought your phone at a Sprint Store, it is
probably activated and ready to use. If it is not
activated, call Sprint Customer Service at
1-800-639-6111 from any other phone.
Press and hold the red End/Power " key to turn
the phone on.
When your phone powers up the first time, it
performs a series of security checks. If you don’t
pass the security checks, you will see messages
and screen prompts showing what to do next.
If you continue to encounter security messages,
call Sprint Customer Service at 1-800-639-6111
from a landline phone.

Set Up Your Phone
Complete the Setup Menu
The first time you turn on your phone, you will see
a screen welcoming you to your phone, along with
a brief setup menu.
Tip: If your phone screen is locked, press h > *
to display the home screen.
Note: To select an item, use the navigation key to highlight
it and press the center of the nav key (r) to select it.
1. To select a language for phone menus, select
Language and select a language.
2. To set up an email account on your phone,
select Email accounts and then follow the
prompts.
3. Select Exit Setup when you have finished setup.
Tip: To return to the setup menu at any time, select the
Apps tab at the bottom of the home screen and select
Setup from the Apps menu.
Note: If you’re using a SIM card from a previous phone,
you can import your SIM contacts to your i886 phone.
Select SIM contacts > Import SIM contacts from the
Setup menu.
Getting Around Your Phone
Home Screen
The home screen lets you access everything
your phone has to offer all in one place. The
home screen extends right and left so you can
add widgets, shortcuts, and folders for easy
access.

Press the nav key up to highlight shortcuts or
other items and press the center of the nav key
(r) to select an item.
Select Apps to display the apps menu.
Press Home (X) from any page to display the
home screen.
Press the nav key left or right to display the
extended home screens.

Make a Phone Call
Voicemail
Make Your First Phone Call
1. Enter a phone number using your dialpad.
(If you make a mistake while dialing, press
the left nav key to erase.)
2. Press the green Talk ! key.
3. When youre finished, press End/Power ".
Make a Call From Call Log or Contacts
1. From the home screen, press Talk !.
2. Press the nav key left or right to display the
Call log or Contacts tab.
3. Highlight an entry and press Talk !.
Set Up Your Voicemail
Unanswered calls are automatically transferred
to your voicemail, even if your phone is in use or
turned off. You should set up your voicemail and
greeting as soon as your phone is activated.
1. Using your MOTOROLA i886, call your wireless
phone number.
2. Follow the system prompts to create your
password and record your name and greeting.
Retrieve Your Voicemail
From your MOTOROLA i886:
Press and hold 1 to be connected to your
voicemail box.
From any other phone:
1. Dial your wireless phone number.
2. When your voicemail answers, press * and
enter your passcode.
Nextel Direct Connect
Nextel Direct Connect Services
Your phone and Sprint service offer the following
Nextel Direct Connect services:
Direct Connect
®
Instant two-way radio
communication with another Direct Connect
user.
Group Connect
®
Connect instantly with up to
20 other Direct Connect users at once.
Talkgroup
SM
Make group calls with up to 100
Nextel subscribers in the same Direct Connect
network. (Online setup by account administrator.)
Nextel Direct Talk
SM
Establish off-network,
two-way radio communication between two or
more Nextel Direct Talk-capable phones. (Direct
Talk calls do not use the Nextel National
Network.)
Make a Direct Connect Call
1. Enter a Direct Connect number using your
dialpad. (Remember to include asterisks when
dialing Direct Connect numbers.)

Select a Direct Connect entry from Contacts or
Call Log.
2. Press and release the Direct Connect button
(DC button) on the side of the phone.
3. Wait for a reply and then press and hold the DC
button to speak. When you are finished, release
the DC button to listen.
4. To end the call, do nothing or press ".
Contacts
Save a Phone Number
1. Enter a phone number and press h > Add to
contacts.
2. Select Create new contact to create a new
contact, or select an entry from the list to save
the number to an existing contact.
3. Slide the QWERTY keyboard open and enter a
name for the entry (if applicable), select a
category for the number (such as Mobile, DC,
Home, or Work) by highlighting the number field
and pressing r > Edit label, and add any other
information you wish to store.
4. Press h > Done to save the contact.
Retrieve a Phone Number
1. Select Apps > Contacts.
2. Use your navigation key to scroll through the
entries, or press h > Search and use the
keyboard or dialpad to enter the first few letters
of the contact entry.
3. To display an entry, highlight it and press r.
4. To call the entry, highlight it and press Talk !.
If prompted, select a number to call.
Email
Messaging
Set Up Email Accounts
If you did not set up email accounts
when you completed the Setup menu, select
Apps > Setup > Email accounts > Add an
Email account now and follow the prompts.
You can also select > Email > h >
Add account to set up new accounts.
Create an Email Message
1. Select > Email > h > Compose to
begin a new email message.
2. Enter a recipient email address, subject, and
message, and then select Send.
Note: To enter addresses, subjects, and text, select the
text fields and use the QWERTY keyboard to enter your
message. For additional options such as adding
attachments or CCs, press Menu h.
Send a Text Message
1. Select > Messaging > New message to
begin a new message.

Select an existing message thread to send a
message to the contact in that thread.
2. Enter a wireless phone number or email
address.

Select Search to select recipients from
Contacts or Call logs. Select Done when you
have finished adding recipients.
3. Use your keyboard to enter a message.
For additional options, including attaching
pictures and videos, press h.
4. Press r to send the message.
Camera
Web
Take a Picture
1. Press the Camera ? button on the side of
the phone to launch the camera.
2. Hold the phone horizontally (with the DC button
at the bottom) to use the display screen as a
viewfinder, and press Camera ? to take the
picture.
3. Wait for the camera to return to camera mode or
press h to explore additional options,
including sending the picture using Bluetooth,
Direct Send, Email, or Messaging.
Record a Video
1. Press Camera ? > h > Camcorder to
activate the phone’s video camera.
2. Hold the phone horizontally (with the DC button
at the bottom) and use the display screen as a
viewfinder.
3. Press Camera ? to begin recording. Press
Camera ? again to stop the recording.
Explore the Web on Your Phone
Select > Opera Mini.
Note: The first time you access the browser, you will be
prompted to accept the Opera software end user
agreement. Scroll to the bottom of the page to read the
agreement and then press h > Accept.
