For more information, refer to the MX408e Command Line Interface and Application Guide (P/N 61189608L1-1)
available online at www.adtran.com
.
1. Attach mounting brackets to the side of the MX408e in the correct orientation for either rackmount or
wallmount using the two screws provided for each bracket.
To rackmount the unit, use the appropriate rack type screws to mount the MX408e into the rack.
CAUTION: Care should be taken to not upset the stability of the equipment rack during installation.
To wallmount the unit, secure the MX408e to the wall with appropriate screws.
2. Connect the frame ground from the frame ground lug on the upper right rear panel (see figure on reverse
page) of the MX408e to the equipment rack grounding screw or other appropriate grounding connection.
3. Make power connections to the MX408e.
NOTE: A readily accessible disconnect device, such as a rackmount fuse and alarm panel that is suitably
approved and rated should be incorporated into the fixed wiring.
Connect to a reliably grounded –48 VDC or ±24 VDC source which is electrically isolated from the
AC source.
The branch circuit overcurrent protection should be a 2 amp, slow-blow fuse or circuit breaker.
3a. Determine which fuse pairs are to supply power to the MX408e.
3b. Remove the fuses from the A and B slots for the pair.
3c. Connect
RET A, PWR A, RET B, and PWR B to the power connector. PWR refers to respective
–48 VDC or ±24 VDC power sources, while
RET refers to respective returns.
4. Apply power and check voltages.
WARNING: Installing fuses in the fuse and alarm panel at this stage provides power to the MX408e pins
and connectors on the rear panel and inside the MX408e. Exercise caution to avoid
electrical shock.
4a. Install appropriate fuses (2 amp slow-blow) in the slots in the fuse and alarm panel that services
the MX408e.
4b. Using a voltmeter, verify that the operating voltage is within the specifications for A or B power
feeds. For more information, refer to “Operational Specifications”.
5. Connect the CRIT (critical), MAJOR, and MINOR alarm leads from the fuse and alarm panel to the
Common (
C), Normally Open (NO), and Normally Closed (NC) wire-wrap terminals on the MX408e
rear panel as required.
6. Connect the auxiliary inputs, labeled
AUX INPUTS, as required. The MX408e auxiliary inputs connect
as follows:
AUX INPUT terminals 1 and 2 connect to Alarm 1
AUX INPUT terminals 3 and 4 connect to Alarm 2
AUX INPUT terminals 5 and 6 connect to Alarm 3
AUX INPUT terminals 7 and 8 connect to Alarm 4
AUX INPUT terminal 9 is not connected
GENERAL
The MX408e Pseudowire Gateway (MX408e) provides the requisite interfaces and switching between a
10/100 Ethernet or GigE network port to four client 10/100 Ethernet ports and eight DSX-1 TDM ports. The
MX408e provides pseudowire connections between the network and client DSX-1 ports and Ethernet
switching between the network and client 10/100 Ethernet ports.
Network ports consist of an RJ-45 10/100 Ethernet jack and an Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) cage for
a GigE SFP module. The four client 10/100 Ethernet ports are equipped with RJ-45 jacks. The eight DSX-1
ports are RJ-48C jacks supporting 4-wire DSX-1s (Transmit Tip, Transmit Ring, Receive Tip, and Receive
Ring).
The MX408e front panel (see figure above) also provides a module slot for future applications. In the event
that a module is not deployed in the MX408e, a blank panel (P/N 1189699L1) is installed.
Features
The MX408e has the following features:
SFPs
CAUTION: Due to compliance certification requirements, use only SFPs supplied by ADTRAN with the
MX408e. ADTRAN cannot certify system integrity with other SFPs. To ensure compatibility,
refer to the documentation provided with each SFP.
The MX408e is not factory-equipped with SFPs. Recommended SFPs are listed in the following table.
INSTALLATION
After unpacking the MX408e, inspect it for damage. If damage is noted, file a claim with the carrier and then
contact ADTRAN. For more information, refer to the warranty statement on the reverse side of this job aid.
Installation and Power Turn-up
To wallmount or rackmount the MX408e, perform the following steps:
GigE copper/fiber SFP or 10/100 Ethernet
Network ports
Four client 10/100 Ethernet ports
Eight client DSX-1 short-haul, intrabuilding ports
DB-9 craft port (RS-232)
Front panel LEDs
