Congratulationsonpurchasingyoursimultaneousdual-band
AirPortExtremeBaseStation.Readthisguidetogetstarted.
AirPortExtremeprovidessimultaneousdual-bandwireless802.11nnetworking.When
yousetupyourAirPortExtremeBaseStation,itcreatestwohigh-speedWi-Finetworks:
 A2.4gigahertz(GHz)networkfor802.11b,802.11g,and802.11ndevices,suchas
iPhone,iPodtouch,andoldercomputers
 A5GHznetworkfor802.11nand802.11adevices,suchasnewercomputers,iPad,
andAppleTV
Wirelessdevicesjointhenetworkthatprovidesthemthebestperformanceand
compatibility,andtheAirPortExtremesharesyourbroadbandInternetconnection
withcomputersanddevicesonyournetwork.
WithyourAirPortExtreme,youcan:
 Createapassword-protectedwirelesshomenetwork,andthenconnecttothe
InternetandsharetheconnectionwithothercomputersandWi-Fidevices,such
asiPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.Youcanalsosharelesamongcomputers
connectedtothenetwork.
 Createaguestnetworkwithorwithoutpasswordprotection,toprovideInternet-only
accesstowirelessdevices,suchascomputers,iPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.

 ConnectyourAirPortExtremetoyourEthernetnetwork.Wireless-equippedMac
computers,WindowsXP,WindowsVista,orWindows7computerscanthenhave
accesstoanentirenetworkwithoutbeingconnectedbyacable.
 ConnectasupportedUSBdevice,suchasaprinterorascanner,toyour
AirPortExtreme.AllofthecompatiblecomputersontheAirPortnetwork,both
wirelessandwired,canaccessthedevice.
 ConnectaUSBharddisktoyourAirPortExtreme.Allofthecompatiblecomputers
ontheAirPortnetwork,bothwirelessandwired,canaccesstheinformationonthe
harddisk.
 ConnectaUSBhubtoyourAirPortExtreme,andthenconnectmultipleUSBdevices,
suchasprintersorharddisks.Allofthecomputersonthenetworkhaveaccessto
thosedevices.
Important: UseAirPortUtilitytosetupyoursimultaneousdual-bandAirPortExtreme
BaseStation.PreviousversionsofAirPortSetupAssistantandAirPortAdminUtilityare
notcompatiblewiththisbasestation.
AirPortUtilityisinstalledintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonacomputer
usingMacOSX,andinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.If
AirPortUtilityisn’tinstalledonyourcomputer,youcandownloaditfrom
www.apple.com/support/airport.
AppleperiodicallyupdatesAirPortsoftware.It’srecommendedthatyouupdateyour
softwaretokeepyourAirPortExtremeuptodate.

setupyourAirPortExtremeandyourAirPortwirelessnetwork.
Note: YoumustuseAirPortUtilitytosetupthisbasestation.Thesimultaneous
dual-bandAirPortExtremeBaseStationisnotcompatiblewithpreviousversions
ofAirPortsoftware.
AirPort Utility
UseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourAirPortExtremetocreateawirelessnetwork,connect
totheInternet,andsharecompatibleUSBprintersandharddisks.Youcanalsoconnect
yourAirPortExtremetoanexistingAirPortExtremewirelessnetwork.
AirPortUtilityisalsoanadvancedtoolforsettingupandmanagingtheTimeCapsule,
AirPortExtreme,andAirPortExpressBaseStations.Useittomanuallyadjustnetwork,
routing,andsecuritysettingsandotheradvancedoptions.

signalqualityofthecurrentnetwork,createacomputer-to-computernetwork,andturn

TousetheAirPortExtremeyouneedawireless-enabledcomputerthatiscompliant
withtheIEEE802.11a,802.11b,802.11g,or802.11nspecication.TosetuptheAirPort
Extreme,yourcomputermustmeettherequirementslistedbelow.
To set up your AirPort Extreme using a Mac, you need the following:
 AMaccomputerwithanAirPortorAirPortExtremeCardinstalledtosetitup
wirelessly,oraMaccomputerconnectedtoanAirPortExtremeBaseStationwithan

To set up your AirPort Extreme using a Windows PC, you need the following:
 AWindowsPCwith300MHzorhigherprocessorspeedandacompatible802.11a,

computerconnectedtoanAirPortExtremeBaseStationwithanEthernetcabletoset

Plugging In AirPort Extreme
BeforeyoupluginyourAirPortExtreme,rstconnecttheappropriatecablestothe
portsyouwanttouse:
 ConnecttheEthernetcablethatisconnectedtoyourDSLorcablemodem(ifyouwill
connecttotheInternet)totheEthernet(WAN)port(<).
 ConnectaUSBcableconnectedfromtheUSBport(d)ontheAirPortExtremeto
acompatibleUSBprinter(ifyouwillprinttoaUSBprinter),aharddisk,orahub.
 ConnectanEthernetcablefromanyEthernetdevicetotheEthernetLANports(G).
Afteryouhaveconnectedthecablesforallthedevicesyouplantouse,connectthe
ACadaptertothepowerport,andplugyourAirPortExtremeintoapoweroutlet.There
isnopowerswitch.

Important: UseonlytheACadapterthatcamewithyourAirPortExtreme.
WhenyouplugtheAirPortExtremeACadapterintoapoweroutlet,thestatuslight
ashesgreenforonesecond,andthenglowsamberwhileitstartsup.Afterithas
startedupcompletely,thestatuslightashesamberuntilyourAirPortExtremehas
beenupdatedwiththecorrectsettings.Thestatuslightglowssolidgreenafteryour
AirPortExtremeisproperlysetupandconnectedtotheInternetoranetwork.
WhenyouconnectEthernetcablestotheEthernetports,thelightsabovethemglow
solidgreen.

Light Status/description
O AirPortExtremeisunplugged.
Flashing green AirPortExtremeisstartingup.Thelightashesforonesecond.

StationpaneofAirPortsettingsinAirPortUtility),thestatuslight
mayashgreentoindicatenormalactivity.
Flashing amber AirPortExtremecannotestablishaconnectiontothenetworkor
theInternet,orisencounteringaproblem.Makesureyouhave
installedAirPortUtilityanduseittogetinformationaboutwhat
