Mini Modem
Designed for easy installation with RS-232 controllable equipment, the Mini Modem
is an installer’s answer to a time consuming and complicated process. The Mini
Modem comes with the initialization string preprogrammed and all the cables needed
to connect to the equipment. Mounting is not a problem because of its size. With the
enclosed hook & loop tape, this modem can be easily attached to just about any
surface area. The LED indicators on the front panel allow for viewing of the signals
and power. For locations that need some privacy, the modem has a speaker on/off
switch in addition to the software commands.
The Mini Modem is a winner when it comes to industrial environments. The enclosure
which is molded from UL94V0 plastic is just the beginning. Only top of the line
semiconductors are used, especially the RS-232 port. The 15KV ESD protection
rating ensures reliable operation in static prone environments. The DC power input
has a large voltage range of 9V-24V and is not polarity sensitive. Plugging an RJ-11
phone cord into this unit has never been easier. There is only one line jack so there is
no confusion as with a two jack system which has a line and phone connection.

Aurora has made this modem with control systems in mind. We designed a cable for
the RS-232 port for use on either brand. Our preprogrammed initialization strings
allow quick setup without having to know all the different codes that vary from one
manufacturer to another. Basically, we have standardized a modem for this and many
other applications. Everything is included for mounting and connecting to the system.
The advantage of standardization is simple, one modem for many types of systems
with no changes to the compatibility. We have successfully transferred files over the
modem at 19.2Kbps for the Panja (AMX) and 115Kbps for the Crestron. Application

Installation is easy
1. Find the mounting location for the modem and attach the hook & loop tape to the
bottom of the modem by peeling away the adhesive strip. Next, remove the other
adhesive strip and press firmly onto the surface where it is to be located.
2. Connect the 9 pin male end of the RS-232 cable labeled MM to the Mini Modem.
The other end will connect to the RS-232 port of the equipment. Gender and size of
the connector is based on the equipment it is used with. The product code located on
the packing slip determines the cables included with the Mini Modem.

The Mini Modem has the initialization string preprogrammed at the factory and will be
marked accordingly on the box. The modem can be changed as described below.

Note: We have found the strings to provide the most reliability for communications up
to 115Kbps for Crestron and 19.2Kbps for Panja (AMX).
If the modem is used for a desktop computer system, do not use the Panja/Crestron
cable. Instead use a 9 pin female - 9 pin female pin-pin with all hardware handshaking
lines and use the following string: AT&F0E0&W0 (ENTER)

3. Plug the RJ-11 cable into the Mini Modem and then into the analog phone jack.
4. Connect the 9V DC round connector into the Mini Modem power connector.
Next, plug the transformer with the AC prongs into a 120V AC wall outlet (Note: If
you are using the control system power cable, plug the end with the green
connector into the AXLINK or CRESNET). The CD LED will briefly light up, the
green power LED will remain on, and the red DTR LED will be on as well.

REN for your calling area.

Tips
Use with Panja (AMX) Axcent 3: The auto baud can sometimes hangup the
modem at certain times when it checks for the computer. If this becomes a
problem, enter the string below in the axcess Define_Start section:
SEND_COMMAND 0,’SET BAUD 19200’
The 19200 can be substituted with 1200, 4800, 9600 baud rates. Remember the
baud rate since it will take it out of auto baud!
Use with Crestron: Set the Crestron frame for 38400 or less for the most
reliability. This is to assure proper uploads and downloads to network devices
such as touch panels. Using a higher baud rate will exceed the 38400 Crestron
network bus speed thus causing errors. If you are using version 1.40.07 of SIMPL
Windows, make certain you have the patch cmvpt32.dll dated 5/04/00 for the
viewport. If not, uploading programs to the frame will not be possible. If after
loading a program there is no communication to make a permanent memory
image, cancel the function then select send program from the file transfer (top
menu bar) again. Next, select permanent memory image only and it will carry out
the function. Crestron states they will look into the problem.
Note: Version 1.50.00 and above does not have the above problem.
In general practice, try not to send strings out through the master programming port
when using a control system with a modem. Modems in general will respond with an
error response making it harder to connect up to the unit. It is good practice to issue
the (enter)AT(enter) command out the programming port upon startup so the modem
can lock onto the baud rate of the unit.
