Section One: Getting Started Introduction
INTRODUCTION
The Pointmaker
®
PVI-83 multiple-sync video marker by Boeckeler Instru-
ments, Inc., is a powerful visual aid that allows you to “make your point” by
marking or pointing over video and/or computer images. It’s colorful markings
easily draw attention where you need it. Pointmakers are valuable assets in
courtrooms, boardrooms, classrooms, city council chambers, government
training facilities, sports or weather broadcasts, video conferences, and more.
PVI-83 Models
Each PVI-83 comes standard with a KB-20 Keyboard and four ports for
attaching control/marking devices (i.e. keyboard, digitizing tablet, light pen,
mouse). There are two model variations, giving you a choice for a second
control/marking device:
PVI-83D(U/R) - includes DT(U/R)-30 Digitizing Tablet
PVI-83L - includes LP-32 Light Pen
The Pointmaker is also compatible with most mouse-like devices and many
touch screens.
Options
There are some options available for expanding the capabilities of your PVI-
83 that your dealer can help you to acquire. They include:
COMM 4/COMM 8 - Hardware installed at the factory for add-
ing 4 or 8 more COMM ports. Extra COMM ports allow you to
attach more control/marking devices (typically digitizing tablets or
touch screens). Then, multiple users can interactively mark over
images. This option is valuable in courtrooms, boardrooms, etc.
UTROL-MT - Allows the PVI-83 to control A/V devices through
the use of software control panels. The included software
(MTBuilder) supports A/V control panel design on standard PCs.
Almost any type of remote controllable A/V device can be
accomodated (VCR, document camera, room lights, etc.) The
control panels are then downloaded into the memory of the PVI-
83, where they become a part of its menu system, ready to be
quickly recalled and activated. This makes your Pointmaker both a
video marker and A/V controller. Contact your dealer for more
details.

Section One: Getting Started Introduction
Text can be typed on the video image in one of 6 different fonts, each
available in one or more sizes. A text background may be added to
further highlight the text on the video image.
Frames in the shapes of circles or boxes may be sized and positioned
to call attention to an area within the frame. Filled frames or fills
allow presenters to block out portions of the video image, useful in
classroom exams or in blocking out extraneous visuals.
An active date/time label can be placed on the video image to time
an event.
The ability to position and anchor a combination of several markers
and drawings on the screen at once.
Options for clearing lines and pointers from an overlay all at once or
one at a time, beginning with the most recently anchored marker.
An erase mode for removing any part of an overlay.
Ability to assign a different color to each marker on the screen. Up to
7 different colors are available for quick access. The color palette can
be minimized by presetting selections in a palette menu.
A drop shadow effect may be selected to further optimize the display
of drawn lines.
(with keyboard installed) The ability to store up to 10 different
marker overlays of Pointmaker markers so that presentations may be
prepared in advance. You can store 25 overlays when using the PVI-
PC20 software with VGA display. Users can scroll forward or back-
ward a page at a time or enter an overlay number to quickly display
the desired overlay. Light pen model without keyboard features one
overlay only, convenient for some applications.
Pointmaker PVI-PC20 - PC-compatible software that supports a level
of integration between the PVI-83 and a PC. With it, the digitizing
tablet can easily switch between controlling the PVI-83 or the PC. It
also lets you assign frequently used PC functions to 8 icons on the tab-
let template, and any displayed images can be printed and/or saved to
the PC along with your markings. Free upon request.
Compatibility with VGA, SVGA and Macintosh equipment with scan
rates up to 71.7 kHz, and Macintosh equipment with scan rates up to
48 kHz. PC compatibility includes many nonstandard video scan
rates in Windows® 95/98/2000. Connections in/out are HD-15 (high
density).
Sync generation allows the Pointmaker to automatically select the
sync if no live video is desired. Instead of a live image, a solid back-
ground appears, ready to be used as one would use a chalkboard.

Introduction Section One: Getting Started
Keyboard control provides a quick way to select many of the menu
system options directly. Instead, function keys provide choices for
pointer type, background, marker colors, brightness levels, on-screen
help, video source selection, and more.
Pen Proximity feature allows you to determine what happens to the
active pointer as the pen is moved away from the tablet or screen. The
pointer can be made to disappear as the pen is pulled away, or to
remain on the video image, ready for positioning
Brightness adjustment gives you the opportunity to set the brightness
of the Pointmaker markers to coincide with the brightness level of the
video signal, so that the markers are displayed optimally for standard
video or for professional broadcasting.
On-Screen Help to assist presenters in quickly setting up their presen-
tation.

Section One: Getting Started Controllers/Markers Overview
CONTROLLERS/MARKERS OVERVIEW
This section introduces you to the most common devices you might use with
the PVI-83. The most basic configurations usually include the keyboard and
either the digitizing tablet or the light pen. However, for RS-232 devices, you
can install up to two tablets and one light pen on either standard model. The
COMM-4 and COMM-8 options give you additional serial ports for adding 4
or 8 more devices (usually tablets, touch screens or mouse devices). The PVI-
83 supports up to 10 USB devices through the addition of powered hubs. Keep
in mind that only one light pen can be installed on any model.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to power down the Pointmaker before
connecting or disconnecting any controllers. The Pointmaker will
automatically detect the controllers installed upon power up.
DT-30 Digitizing Tablets
The Pointmaker DTU-30 Digitizing Tablet(USB model), diagrammed below,
comes standard with the PVI-83DU. The DTR-30 Digitizing Tablet(RS-232
model) is also available either as an accessory, or with the PVI-83DR pack-
age. In general, the tablet is used to draw, position pointers or make menu
selections. The position and movements of the stylus (also called a pen) are
represented on whatever display devices are activated. Additionally, most
setup commands can be activated using the tablet rather than entering the
menu system (see “Menu Basics“ in “Section Three: PVI-83 Menu System”
on page 39).
Refer back to this section, if needed, for general instructions concerning the
tablet’s operation.

ACTIVE AREA
The maximum area on the Pointmaker digitizing tablet that responds
to the stylus. This area measures 5" x 5" and includes the Menu Strip,
as well as the Tracking Area.
T
RACKING AREA
The drawing and pointing region within the tablet's Active Area. The
Tracking Area corresponds to the screen area on the monitor or dis-
play.
M
ENU STRIP
The icons (or buttons) at the top of the Active Area that you click on
to select pointer or line style, erase or clear markers, change marker
colors, or change to another marker overlay.
T
IP BUTTON
The Tip Button of the stylus is a select button, like the left button of a
mouse. Use the Tip Button to draw or position markers. Clicking the
Tip Button on a tablet icon activates that icon’s function. You also use
this button in combination with the Barrel Button to access the menu
system.
B
ARREL BUTTON
Use the Barrel Button like the right button of a mouse. You primarily
use this button to anchor markers. You also use this button in combi-
nation with the Tip Button to access the menu system.
Marker and Cursor Movement
Unlike a mouse controller, a tablet allows you to make drawings and place
pointers with absolute positioning (mouse devices and keyboards use relative
positioning). Absolute positioning means that the position of the stylus on the
tablet surface corresponds directly to the position on the screen. For example,
if you place the stylus in the lower-left corner of the tablet Tracking Area, the
active pointer will move to the lower-left corner of the screen. Absolute posi-
tioning may take a few moments to adjust to if you’ve never used a tablet.
LP-32 Light Pen
The Pointmaker LP-32 light pen controller is sold separately by Boeckeler
Instruments, or comes standard with model PVI-83L. In general, you use the
pen like a writing utensil, pressing the tip against a CRT screen (LCD monitors
do not work) to draw, position pointers, or make menu selections. Light pen

use is NOT recommended on a touch screen monitor. The broad definitions of
the two buttons on the light pen controller are listed below.
For details on light pen button functions, refer to the Appendix (see “Quick
Reference for Light Pen” on page 158).
Figure 1-4: Pointmaker LP-32 Light Pen Controller
TIP BUTTON
The Tip Button of the light pen is a select button, like the left but-
ton of a mouse. Use the Tip Button to draw or position markers.
Clicking the Tip Button on a menu option activates that option.
You also use this button in combination with the Barrel Button to
access the menu system.
B
ARREL BUTTON
Use the Barrel Button like the right button of a mouse. You pri-
marily use this button to clear and undo markers. You also use
this button in combination with the Tip Button to access the
menu system.
Marker and Cursor Movement
The cursor or marker follows the light pen’s tip movements on the monitor
screen. For greater feel of precision while marking or drawing, it may be nec-
essary to calibrate the light pen. Since the pen calibration varies slightly with
each monitor, you need to calibrate the light pen on first installation, and then
each time you install a new monitor or display (see “Calibrating PVI-83 Con-
trollers“ in “Section Three: PVI-83 Menu System” on page 55).

KB-20 Keyboard
The Pointmaker KB-20 keyboard controller comes standard with both PVI-83
models. With the keyboard you can select, type, position, save, and erase the
markers on the overlay. You also use the keyboard to access the menu system
and change the appearance of markers. The following are general definitions
for keyboard functions.
More details on each key’s functions can be found in the Appendix
(see “Quick Reference for Keyboard” on page 158).
Figure 1-5: Pointmaker KB-20 Keyboard Controller
Keyboard Controller Functions
The keyboard functions can be divided into two categories: Marking
Keys and Action Keys.
Marking keys display markers or affect their appearance, such as
Frames and Frame Sizing
Action Keys control operations of the unit, such as changing to a dif-
ferent marker overlay or switching to a different video source.
Marker and Cursor Movement
When operating the Pointmaker with the keyboard controller, you can position
active markers using the arrow keys (referred to as Positioning Keys). These
keys are located to the right of the Enter key. For fine movement, press the Ctrl
key along with one of the Positioning keys.
You can also use Positioning keys to size frames before they are anchored. For
fine sizing, press the Ctrl key along with one of the positioning keys.
